Club History & Affiliations Stockton and Thornaby Canoe Club is a volunteer run private members club affiliated to British Canoeing, the governing body of paddlesport in England. We promote all aspects of Paddlesports but in particular our members are involved in introducing new people to the sport through the British Canoeing UKCC coaching scheme, white water, touring, Sea Kayaking and general leisure paddling on lakes and placid water. Some members are also involved in marathon paddling and slalom. The club organises a number of weekend trips each year to paddle on rivers and lakes further afield, typically camping or staying in hostels. We have links with other clubs in the area which specialise in slalom and canoe polo. We currently have around 150 members drawn not just from Teesside but also from North Yorkshire and County Durham. We base ourselves at the Tees Barrage International White Water Centre where our club equipment is stored in a building recently built with National Lottery funding. The club owns a substantial fleet of boats including general purpose kayaks, white water kayaks, touring canoes, K1 and K2 marathon boats plus a couple of sit-on- tops. In addition we have paddles, buoyancy aids, cags and spray decks. We have a range of sizes of equipment which can accommodate most people who wish to paddle with us. We are able to accommodate around 30-40 people using club equipment on club nights. We have a recently bought a trailer and we have access to a second trailer. This allows us to run trips and club nights away from the White Water Centre including members who do not have their own equipment or transport. During the summer months we have a regular Wednesday Evening Club meeting which is often but not always at the White Water Centre. Typically some members will make use of the white water course, there will be various groups undertaking coaching towards British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor 1 and 2 for Canoe and Kayak and others will have a social paddle on the Tees. We may also get out the marathon boats. In the winter the club meetings retreat to a local swimming pool on alternate Wednesdays. Space is limited so sessions are pre-booked. We teach rolling and also introduce new people to the sport over the winter. Experienced members arrange white water river trips and sea kayaking trips throughout the year including an annual trip to the French Alps. The club has been in existence for over 20 years and has previously used sites a Castlegate in Stockton and two sites in Yarm. 5 FUN | FRIENDSHIP | ADVENTURE

Coaches The Club is committed to improving the standard of its coaching and regularly sponsors coaches and leaders in their pursuit of higher levels of qualification. All Club coaches and leaders are qualified under British Canoeing’s coaching scheme. All are volunteers and provide coaching for members at the club and on trips. The coaches at the club also hold a current First Aid certificate appropriate to their coaching qualification, are DBS checked, and have completed basic safeguarding awareness training. If you are interested in becoming a Coach or Leader, or if you want to know more about these speak to the Club’s Coaching Coordinator. Peer Paddles A peer paddle/trip means that you paddle at your own risk. Peer group paddling is very different from a Club Paddle. On a peer paddle, nobody takes overall responsibility for the safety or wellbeing of the group. This means: • There is no designated leader or river leadership (assumed or otherwise) although a peer paddle trip ‘organiser’ may co-ordinate the logistics. The role of the organiser is to coordinate the trip to help get everyone in the right place at the right time; suggest the route etc. • However, organiser have no more authority over the group, or responsibility for the group than any other participant. Everyone takes full responsibility for themselves, their safety and their kit, whilst behaving is a responsible way that does not put other members of the group at risk. • Group members are expected to look out for each other, whilst staying within their own limitations. • There is no onus on anyone to support anyone else if they do not feel confident doing so in any situation. For a full definition and more information on Peer Paddles please refer to the club’s policies and procedures, available on the club website below: https://www.stocktonthornabycanoeclub.co.uk/club-policies/ 12 FUN | FRIENDSHIP | ADVENTURE
Basic Guide to River Grades This guide is to help you decide whether or you think a river trip is suitable for you to join in. However, if you are unsure as always please do feel free to ask a coach or river leader. This is a basic guide to the different difficulty levels when attending a peer paddle. As always, the coach/river leader will have final say whether they think you are suitable for the planned trip. Please don't feel offended if you are advised to miss a trip as they are looking out for your wellbeing. Grade Definition Ungraded Ungraded sections of slow-moving rivers where the group could paddle upstream against the flow (not involving the shooting of, or playing on, weirs or running rapids). A trip suitable for all people of all standards and of all ages (coaches permitting). Grade 1 Moving water with occasional small rapids. Few or no obstacles to negotiate. A trip suitable for all people of all standards and of all ages (coaches permitting). Grade 2 Small rapids featuring regular waves. Some manoeuvring required. Beginners Paddle (coaches permitting). Grade 2(3) The overall standard of the run is grade 2, but there may be a few (normally one or two) grade 3 rapids that can be portaged if required. Intermediate Paddle (coaches permitting). Grade 3 Most rapids will have irregular waves and hazards that need avoiding. More difficult manoeuvring will be required but routes are normally obvious. Scouting from shore is occasionally necessary to maintain line of sight. Intermediate Paddle (coaches permitting). Grade 4 Large rapids that require careful manoeuvring. Scouting from the shore is often necessary and rescue is usually difficult. Kayakers should be able to roll before tackling these rapids. In the event of a mishap there is significant risk of loss, damage and/or injury. Advanced Paddle (coaches permitting). Grade 4(5) The overall standard of the run is grade 4, but there may be a few (normally one or two) grade 5 rapids that can be portaged if required. Advanced Paddle (coaches permitting). Grade 5 Extremely difficult – long and very violent rapids with severe hazards. Continuous, powerful, confused water makes route-finding difficult and scouting from the shore is essential. Precise manoeuvring is critical and for kayakers, rolling ability needs to be 100%. Rescue is very difficult or impossible and in the event of a mishap there is significant hazard to life. Very Advanced Paddle (coaches permitting). 13 FUN | FRIENDSHIP | ADVENTURE

Photographs/Privacy The club often uses images of our paddling in the newsletter, website, Facebook groups and for publicity of the sport. As a member of Stockton & Thornaby Canoe Club you are asked to allow images of yourself or your family to be published to help publicise the sport. You can ask for any photograph or image to be removed or taken down at any time or indeed ask anyone with a camera not to photograph you or your family. We really will not mind. First Aid The club has a number of First Aid certified members to keep us all safe on and off the water. First aid kits are located in the boat-house and in the club’s boat trailer. While on the river, the river leader will provide first aid and will carry the required kits with them. If you are unfortunate to have to use these then we ask that you please complete the accident book and inform a coach or committee member so that used items can be replaced. The Boatstore First Aid kit is located on the rear of the main notice board. 15 FUN | FRIENDSHIP | ADVENTURE

New Starters Questions To make things as enjoyable as possible Stockton & Thornaby Canoe Club have put together a couple of basic questions and answers that should help get beginners onto the water: Q. What do I need to bring/Wear? A. You don’t need any specialist clothing to paddle. Just wear old clothes that you don’t mind getting wet or muddy. A windproof jacket can be handy, old trainers or even wetshoes. Q. Do I need a change of clothes? A. Yes, always make sure that you have a full change of clothes with you and a towel, just in case you do get wet or have an unexpected swim. These can be left securely in your car. Q. Is there anything that I shouldn’t wear? A. Don’t wear jeans or heavy cotton clothes as these can feel very cold when wet Q. Will I get wet? A. Yes, everyone at some point will end up in the water. Even the best paddlers swim from time to time. Q. What Kit will the club provide me? A. Should you need it, the club will provide you with the right kit to get you on the water safely.
