Mid-March 2021
Students are encouraged to complete at least one form of work experience during Year 12.
Research has shown that employers rate people skills, technology skills and work experience as the top
requirements for a job applicant, and students who have undertaken some kind of work shadowing are
three times more likely to be successful in finding employment in the future than those who haven’t!
Students who have taken part in Work Shadowing placements have found the experience very worthwhile,
and many students using evidence of this kind of activity to support university applications and job
applications.

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)
About the programme
Over summer 2020, some of our Labs joined together to provide students with online webinar sessions that were
well attended, to allow them to experience some of the work we do at STFC. For summer 2021, we will be offering a
similar series of online sessions for students to attend. In addition to this, we will be organising a small number of
more intensive one-week virtual project placements. Potential dates will be:28 June - 2 July, 5 - 9 July, 12 - 16 July, 9
- 13 August. Applications for both the webinar and virtual project placement schemes will be through a single
application process.
