Introduction to LIF Advance LIF Advance is a bespoke, individual programme of relationship-building and business growth activities open to alumni of the Leaders in Innovation Fellowships (LIF) programme. The programme aims to help participants grow their businesses, expand their networks into the UK, and further develop their leadership skills within the LIF community. It achieves this by bringing together a cohort of innovators from the LIF Community and providing them with bespoke training, mentoring, and networking opportunities, both internationally and in the UK. Objectives 1. Support the best of LIF alumni worldwide to achieve their full commercial potential and equip them to grow their business. 2. Provide a landing opportunity into the UK innovation ecosystem for participants who might wish to establish a business in the UK or partner with relevant UK organisations. 3. Support LIF Advance participants to take on leadership roles in the LIF Community and in their regional and national innovation ecosystems. Programme Structure The LIF Advance programme has three pillars: Individual needs analysis and goal setting The LIF Advance programme is bespoke to each participant’s needs, with the goal of supporting each individual to identify and overcome their barriers to commercial growth and development. Participants will work closely with their peers, mentors, and trainers to define short- and medium-term goals, and action plans to achieve them. Cohort formation and streaming The emphasis in LIF Advance is on the formation of a strong cohort. While all participants receive bespoke, individualised support, they will also benefit from relationships and shared experiences with their LIF Advance peers. Depending on the size of the cohort, participants may be further streamed into ‘Growth Groups’ – smaller groups of LIF Advance participants each focused on a particular challenge common to members of the group. LIF Advance 2021-2022 Applicant Guidance | 4 |
Strategic relationship-building support Since first taking part in the LIF programme, LIF Advance participants will have made significant progress in refining their business model and product design. The next steps in their commercialisation journey will require advice from and connections with key stakeholders in their industry, including investors, regulatory authorities, manufacturers and distributors. LIF Advance will provide the tools and opportunities to meet with these key stakeholders in the UK and open the doors for them to be able to move forward into the next stages of growth for their business venture. 2021-2022 Programme Theme Digital technologies for social inclusion Each LIF Advance cohort has a specific thematic focus. The theme of the 2021-2022 programme is ‘Digital technologies for social inclusion’. Digital technologies are not value neutral. While they have provided the means for significant advances in individual and societal well-being, they can also generate serious ethical problems with real-world consequences. The is risk is that digital technologies hinder progress towards reducing inequalities more than they help. This year’s LIF Advance is open to participants’ whose innovation leverages digital technologies for the ultimate benefit of society. In addition to supporting participants to achieve their full commercial potential, LIF Advance will also equip participants with the skills and knowledge they need to address the risks of digital technologies while ensuring the benefits they bring can apply to everyone. This thematic area could cover digital technologies deployed across a number of sectors. It includes, but is not limited to: • Finance – technologies which support individuals or communities to participate in and benefit from financial systems which would be otherwise unavailable to them. • Education – technologies which increase access to educational resources and/or address the specific needs of individual or communities who aren’t served by current educational models. • Healthcare – technologies for individuals or communities with healthcare needs that impact their quality of life. • Natural Environment – technologies which mitigate the impacts of climate change or contribute to a sustainable, Net Zero future. • Built Environment – technologies which address challenges in urban or rural built environments in order to improve quality of life for residents. • Digital Infrastructure – technologies which improve other digital systems in order to ultimately promote social inclusion and reduce inequality, especially systems that build digital capacity in low- and middle-income countries. Full thematic eligibility criteria are described in the following section. LIF Advance 2021-2022 Applicant Guidance | 8 |

FAQs Q: What kind of innovations fall under the theme of ‘Digital technologies for social inclusion’? A: The main eligibility criteria and thematic eligibility criteria for the programme are set out in the above sections. In general, you should ask yourself: • Does my innovation depend on or significantly leverage a digital technology such as AI, IoT, machine learning, robotics, or blockchain, or does it produce the underlying hardware that makes such technologies possible? • Does my innovation address inequalities faced by individuals or communities who are not always reached because of geography, socioeconomic status, gender or other social or cultural reasons? If you are still unsure, you are welcome to contact the LIF team at info-lif@raeng.org.uk to discuss your application. As with the main LIF programme, we do not accept innovations with a primary application in the defense, military or fossil-fuel-based energy sectors. Q: What is the review process for LIF Advance applications? A: All applications to the LIF Advance programme are first checked for eligibility by Academy staff. Eligible applications will go to a Selection panel, who will perform an in-depth review into the application, including reviewing the innovation, business and reasons for wanting to participate in LIF Advance. Sometimes, some candidates may be contacted for further information that is required by the Selection Panel before they can make their decision. The Selection Panel will consider: • Adherence to all entry and eligibility requirements • The potential social, economic, or environmental benefit of the innovation to socially excluded groups • The benefit that LIF Advance could provide for the applicant, their business and/or their team. Q: If I am accepted on to the LIF Advance programme, will I need to travel? A: Phase 1 and Phase 3 of the LIF Advance programme will be carried out remotely (online). Phase 2 of the programme is the UK residential programme, which will take place in London, UK, COVID-19 restrictions permitting. The LIF Team appreciates the importance of meeting in-person, and the benefits that come with in-person networking and relationship-building opportunities. Our primary goal is to find a way to provide an in-person experience for all participants on the LIF Advance programme. LIF Advance 2021-2022 Applicant Guidance | 21 |
Ideally, our residential programme would take place in the UK so that participants can take advantage of proximity to the UK tech ecosystem to build connections and develop networks. However, depending on the COVID situation in the UK and internationally, these plans may need to be adjusted. If we cannot run the residential in the UK, we will look to run an in-person event or series of events outside of the UK, bringing together smaller sections of the cohort depending on the cohort’s geographical locations. If no in-person events can take place, we will deliver the residential week online. Q: What is the cost to participate in LIF Advance? A: There is no fee or tuition for the LIF Advance programme. All travel costs related to Phase 2 will be covered by the Academy, with the exception of visas and travel insurance which participants must organise and cover independently. If the cost of obtaining a visa and arranging travel insurance would prevent you from taking part in the programme, please contact the LIF Team on info-lif@raeng.org.uk. Q: What is the Academy’s policy around COVID-secure travelling? A: The health and safety of participants in any Academy programme is of the utmost importance. All of our events adhere to current UK government regulations and guidance around COVID-19. Guests at Prince Philip House may be asked to wear face coverings and stay physically distanced in order to ensure the safety and comfort of everyone on the programme. Depending on the travel regulations and requirements at the time of the UK Residential, financial support may be available for pre- and post-travel testing, hotel quarantine stays, and other COVID-related requirements. Selected participants on the LIF Advance programme will receive further information closer to their travel dates. Q: What is the Academy’s policy around sustainable travel? A: The Academy acknowledges its responsibility and commitment to minimising the impact of its activities on the environment as an intrinsic part of its ambition to harness the power of engineering to build a sustainable society and inclusive economy that works for everyone. All participant flights will be carbon-offset at no cost to the participant. LIF Advance 2021-2022 Applicant Guidance | 22 |
Q: My internet is sometimes unstable. Can I still participate in the LIF Advance programme if it is delivered virtually? A: The LIF team will support applicants where possible to ensure an unstable internet connection does not become a barrier to application to the programme. If you think you will have a problem connecting to the online training programme, please let us know by contacting info-lif@raeng.org.uk. Q: I was unsuccessful last year. Can I apply again? A: You may submit a new application every year, provided your innovation meets the thematic and general eligibility criteria for the new LIF Advance round. Q: I have multiple products or innovations. Can I apply more than once? A: No. Applicants may only submit one application per LIF Advance round. Q: I am working on a different innovation to the one I brought to the original LIF programme. Am I still eligible to apply? A: Yes. If your new innovation meets the thematic and general eligibility criteria, you are welcome to apply to the LIF Advance programme. Q: I’m currently on the LIF7 programme. Am I still eligible to apply? A: Yes. All LIF7 participants whose innovations meet the thematic and general eligibility criteria are invited to apply for the LIF Advance programme. LIF7 participants considering applying to the LIF Advance programme may wish to take the following into account: • The LIF Advance programme is bespoke to each participant. The programme delivery team will work with you to co-design a programme that meets your individual needs. You will need a good understanding of your innovation, business, and goals for the future in order to fully participate in this process. • Getting the most out of the LIF Advance programme will require a significant time commitment, including international travel. You may want to reflect on whether you have the time to devote to this. • There may be some overlap between the start of LIF Advance and the end of LIF7.
