Cantor’s Notes Beth Tzedec Shofar Cantor’s Notes As June is typically the month of weddings, I thought it would be interesting to explore one of the Jewish wedding’s most iconic moments, the breaking of the glass. Traditionally, the groom does the deed, but today the couple often shares the honor/pleasure, smashing one or two napkin-wrapped glasses as they prepare to enter into their new life together. Few Jewish symbols have a single explanation, and this one is downright kaleidoscopic. The custom itself dates back to the writing of the Talmud. In tractate Berakhot it is written, “Mar bar Rabina made a marriage feast for his son. He observed that the rabbis present were very boisterous. So he seized an expensive goblet worth 400 zuzim and broke it before them. Thus he made them sober.” In other words, where there is rejoicing, there should also be trembling. However, its interpretation changed somewhat by the 14th century when, according to Maurice Lamm’s The Jewish W ay in Love and Marriage, the breaking of the glass was viewed as a reminder of the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. Either way, the lesson is that even at the height of personal joy, we recall the pain and losses suffered by the Jewish people and remember a world in need of healing. The fragility of glass can also suggest the frailty of human relationships. Since even the strongest love is subject to disintegration, the glass is broken as a kind of incantation, “As this glass shatters, so may our marriage never break.” In addition, loud noises have always been a time-honored method for frightening and appeasing demons that are attracted to beautiful and fortunate people, such as the happy couple beneath the huppah. So that also could be an explanation. 4 Beth Tzedec Congregation June 2021
Beth Tzedec Shofar Cantor’s Notes Or, if that doesn’t appeal to you, you might prefer this reason. Since marriage is also a covenant, which in Judaism is made by breaking or cutting something, the broken glass actually “cuts” the covenant just as at Sinai the covenant was sealed when Moses broke the first set of tablets. Breaking a glass also has sexual connotations, as it prefigures the release of sexual union, which is not only permitted to married couples but also required of them. I’m not sure if I have ever heard anyone give this reason at an actual wedding, but it is definitely written about in Jewish sources. Whatever reason is ultimately assigned to it, the crash of glass ends the hush of mythic time under the huppah, and signifies a new beginning for a newly consecrated couple, but what becomes of this heap of broken glass, lying alone in a cloth on the floor beneath the huppah? Many couples choose to have something made from their glass, a mosaic in a frame or something equally decorative. Many artists, showcasing their work online, offer to create a beautiful piece to be displayed in the marital home, so the couple gets to see their glass every day. The shards of my wedding glass are in the stem of a Kiddush cup so that I can always remember how fragile the fleeting beautiful moments of the Shabbat and Chagim are. By looking at those shards I remember not to take anything beautiful for granted. May the same be said of all of us. May we always cherish what is beautiful in our lives, because it can be shattered, most unexpectedly, in the blink of an eye. Norman & Beulah Martin Cantorial Chair Life Cycle Events In Memoriam Alan Thomas Samchek, husband of Monica Castano Samchek, father of Moriah Samchek and David Samchek, son of Lena Sawchuk, brother of Anthony (Melissa) Samchek and Greg (Michelle) Samchek. The funeral was held on May 10, 2021. If you are marking a lifecycle event and would like it included in SHOFAR, please let us know Sivan-Tammuz 5781 Beth Tzedec Congregation 5
Through the President's Lens Beth Tzedec Shofar Through the President's Lens A Message from David Inhaber Hi Everyone, It is bittersweet to write my last Shofar article after serving four years as Beth Tzedec president, especially at a time when our community is so deeply affected by the continuing COVID-19 pandemic and escalating violence in Israel and Gaza. Beth Tzedec continues to stand with Israel, and I echo Cantor Russell Jayne’s May 12 statement to our congregation: We unequivocally condemn these indiscriminate rocket attacks by Hamas and other militant groups and support the Israeli government's need to defend its citizens. We also know that there is, ultimately, no solution possible to this crisis without addressing its persistent root causes. We encourage you all at this time not only to pray for the restoration of peace and calm, but also to donate, if you are able, to organizations such as Canadian Magen David Adom, which supports first responders in Israel whose job is to care for all the wounded. We also encourage you to support, in any way possible, the many organizations that are working for a sustainable peace for Israel and the entire Middle East. The cycle of hatred and violence must be broken. During two consecutive terms as your president, I have made programming for youth and young families a priority. We now have significant building blocks in place upon which future Beth Tzedec leadership can continue to build. With your participation and support, we can ensure an increasingly vibrant and exciting shul. An important step in that direction is our recent decision to open Shul School registration to the greater Jewish community. Please see details on upcoming info sessions for both Shul School and B’nai Mitzvah classes on pages 10 and 11. Our hard-working Engagement Director, Jonah Potasznik, is in the process of developing a year of programming designed to further engage congregants of every age and stage. Watch for exciting new offerings in addition to the highly successful programs we already have in place, including monthly Hazak +55 programs, holiday celebrations and educational offerings for adults and young adults. Of course we also know that the way to our congregants’ hearts is sometimes through their stomachs. That is why we have been very pleased to offer grab and go catering services like the Carriage House trio of Cheesecakes during Shavuot and the May 28 Shabbat dinner prepared onsite by Roma Catering. I encourage everyone to attend our virtual Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, June 23 at 7:00pm. We look forward to updating you on Beth Tzedec’s finances and the various options we are currently exploring with regards to our Synagogue building. Don’t forget, Good and Welfare is an excellent time to share your questions and observations on any aspect of Beth Tzedec life. I want to wish a yasher koach to Lorne Pearl who is returning for a second term as Beth Tzedec President. Lorne will be supported in leadership by VP Finance and Treasurer Josh Inhaber, VP Personnel and Operations Joshua Switzer and Secretary and Ritual Chair, Jeff Dworkin, all of whom agreed to another two-year term. Other continuing board members include Lou Bracey, Ian Cohen, Dr. Eddy Lang, Heather Lister (Chair of our Youth Committee), Dr. Gerald Pfeffer, Saul Prince and Cheryl Shiell. 6 Beth Tzedec Congregation June 2021
Beth Tzedec Shofar Through the President's Lens Todah rabah to Gregory Davis and Joey Tappenden who are completing their board service this month. I am grateful for their past leadership and will miss them at the board table. Fortunately, we know that they are only a phone call away. It is a pleasure to welcome Lori Abernethy and Klara Meyers to the 2021-2023 board of directors. Each has previously served on the Beth Tzedec board and both can hit the ground running as seasoned shul leaders. We are also very blessed that Markham Silver will remain as our legal counsel. Susan Inhaber will continue to enliven our daily minyanim as our NML Commissioner. I urge everyone who isn’t already on a team to consider supporting this wonderful community- building endeavor. Todah rabah to Maxine Fischbein who graciously stepped in as interim Hazak +55 chair more than a year ago. Maxine will be retiring from that role at the end of June but is very happy to assist a new chair in planning next year’s program. If you are interesting in organizing this wonderful monthly program, please contact Maxine or me. I want to thank everyone who joined in honouring Maxine and Markham at last month’s Virtual Night of Mirth and Mitzvot. The M&M event was well attended and everybody had a great time. I am also very pleased to report that more than $100,000 was raised in support of Beth Tzedec’s Legacy and LIFE & LEGACY funds. Todah rabah to congregants and friends whose gifts to these funds will support our congregation in perpetuity. Thank you to event chair Lorne Pearl, committee members Cheryl Shiell and Stuart Myron, and all the volunteers and staff who created an evening to remember. Speaking of LIFE & LEGACY, we recently entered our third year as partners in this exciting community building endeavor. If you have not yet signed your letter of intent, we hope that you will consider making your gift to the future this year. This gesture requires no money down, just a promise that you will support Beth Tzedec – and your choice of other qualifying organizations – with an after lifetime gift. For more information, please speak to incoming president Lorne Pearl or any member of the Beth Tzedec LIFE & LEGACY team. As you may have heard by now, I will be moving into the professional role as Beth Tzedec’s interim executive director this summer, temporarily filling Max Lipsman’s shoes as he enjoys a well-deserved semi-retirement. Max will continue to assist in the operations of the Beth Tzedec Memorial Park in order to ensure a smooth transition. More information on staffing plans, including the search for Beth Tzedec’s permanent executive director, will be shared at our June AGM. While we are not yet saying goodbye to Max, I do want to thank him for his outstanding contribution in professionalizing Beth Tzedec’s operations. We are all blessed that he will continue to work with us in the near term. As your interim executive director, I will be in charge of the day to day operations at Beth Tzedec while your new president, Lorne Pearl, and the board of directors will be responsible for establishing Synagogue policies. As I move from one role to another, I want to thank the entire congregation for the good wishes and support you have provided throughout my presidency. It has been a privilege to serve you as president and I look forward to tackling my new responsibilities on your behalf. Don’t forget . . . my door is always open! National Minyan League Beth Tzedec Shofar Numbers 9:00am & 6:00pm 880 0789 9732 & 865 0126 4198- 894894 Ten How many unmuted with videos on? What page are we on? How many points do we have? Which team is leading in the standings? Phone numbers, addresses, bills, cooking, time- the list is endless. How many beloved members of our congregation have we lost? How many beloved members of the NML have we lost? How many days until we can be together in person? How many weeks until we can hug each other? How many months until we can travel again? So many numbers! So many things to count and keep track of. In the Torah, we have just started the Book of Numbers which starts with the taking of the census. From the group of 70 who had gone down to Egypt, they are now over 600,000. The Levites are not counted since they are exempt from military service and have the special task of taking care of the Tabernacle. God’s promises are fulfilled in this book. The Israelites have become a great nation; they have a special relationship with God, and they will take possession of the land of Canaan. Each male over the age of twenty is counted by name to show that they each matters individually; each is important and dear to God. Every individual is uniquely different and has a contribution to make to the whole. The same can be said of the National Minyan League. Each active member is valued and unique. Some come daily. Others a few times a week. Others only on their scheduled day. Some come to earn extra points for their team on Bonus Days. Some daven. Others tell jokes and start conversations to engage the attendees. Some are quiet and others join in with the prayers. But each person is making a difference to the community and a contribution to our Beth Tzedec family. We need everyone. And we are always looking for new members. May we continue to go from strength to strength. Thank you to all and wishing you health and fulfillment. Susan Inhaber, NML Commissioner 8 Beth Tzedec Congregation June 2021

Bar Mitzvah Profile Beth Tzedec Shofar Oliver Simon Freidin June 12, 2021 2 Tammuz 5781 Oliver Simon Freidin is the son of Greg and Stacey Freidin and will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on June 12, 2021. He is big brother to Easton Freidin, and first grandson to Jeff and Suzanne Staniloff, Earl Freidin and Josie Freidin. Oliver is in Grade 8 at West Island College. He loves playing basketball and can be found in his backyard shooting hoops in the spring and summer. Oliver likes playing baseball, tennis and golf. He also likes hanging out with his friends (in a physically distant manner, while wearing his mask, when allowed by local regulations). Oliver is an astute mathematician who loves travelling and sampling local cuisines. He had planned to hold his Bar Mitzvah in 2020 in Israel, but unfortunately COVID prevented that. He is nonetheless excited to finally be called to the bimah in his hometown of Calgary. We are all very proud of you, Oliver – Mazel Tov! Beth Tzedec is on facebook! Beth Tzedec Shofar Bar Mitzvah Profile Henry Matthew Elchitz June 19, 2021 9 Tammuz 5781 Henry, the son of Rory Hornstein and Ian Elchitz, and younger brother to Brady, will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, June 19, 2021. Henry is currently completing Grade 8 at The Calgary Jewish Academy and is an honors student excelling in sciences and the humanities. Henry enjoys playing volleyball, video games, drama and anything that involves spending time with his friends. He is an avid and experienced camper, having completed multiple trips on lakes and rivers in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and the West Coast with his family over the years. Henry especially loves spending his summers at Camp BB Riback, which will always hold a special place in his heart. In honor of this occasion, he has decided to make a donation that will provide others in the community with the opportunity to attend camp and share the same experiences he has enjoyed. Henry has taken his Bar Mitzvah preparation very seriously, putting endless energy into it throughout the challenges we’ve all endured during the past 15 months, including having his Bar Mitzvah postponed. It is a tribute to Henry that so many of his friends and family members from Calgary and beyond will be able to celebrate this day with him and his family.
