MAY 2021 SILHOUETTES NEWS The Jacksonville Chapter Silhouettes of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. assisted in the preparation of the baskets and on the day of the event – Silhouettes Lisa Brittain, Mildred Calhoun, Karen Gant, Melanie McWhite, Victoria Riggins, Darlene Spann, Traci Womack, and yours truly! The Kappas, led by Polemarch Collins, were right alongside as partners, with financial support and presence as requested. Kappa Rashad Reed served as host and read the Easter Story to our virtual participants. Kappas Dwight Williams and Anthony Cobb facilitated our access to the Kappa House. During this time, the Southern Province of PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE the Silhouettes hosted its annual meeting HAPPY SPRING! Spring brings with it a virtually on April 17, 2021. Brown, Jr. Married 28 years Children: Avery (27), Corey (25), Haviland(22 on 5/2), Joshua (12), and Zoe (10) Occupation: Stay-at-home-mom since 1994. Name: Mildred Bass Calhoun Presently, a volunteer teacher’s aide helping my Kappa: Wayne Calhoun daughter in her virtual schoolwork since March Married: 39 years and five months 2020. I look forward to my August 2021 retirement. Children: Preston and Holly Hobbies: Handcrafting, particularly knitting, Grandchildren: Eboni, Khadijah, Ladee, King, and reading, and riding my Can-Am Spyder (named Joshua, Great-grandchildren: Madisyn, Kaylee, and Anansi). Clifton Jr ("CJ") Son-in-law: Clifton Austin, Sr Occupation: Retired buyer for the Hewlett-Packard Company and a retired chef, owner, and operator of restaurant Café Something Special by Mildred, Milpitas, CA. Hobbies: Travelling, cooking gourmet cuisines, and interior decorating. I have been blessed to visit each of the fifty United States. The criteria to make the visit authentic were an overnight stay within the state (no airport stopovers), eat a meal(s) that represented the state's culture, and a historical tour of a city within the state. I have also travelled to Israel, South Africa, England, Holland, Canada, Bahamas, and Jamaica. In my free time, I enjoy writing in my journal and sending hand-written cards to loved ones, playing Scrabble, assorted board games, and card games. 2

CONGRATULATIONS SILHOUETTE BETTY We are happy to highlight just a few for HOWARD ON YOUR 50+ YEARS OF special recognition and appreciation: SERVICE AS A SILHOUETTE! The Kappa Foundation, under the leadership of Kappa Dennis Gamble, funded this year’s membership dues for our Silhouette widows- Simply awesome! Silhouette Barbara Darby received the 2021 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from the University of North Florida for her service to the Jacksonville Community. Thank you Silhouette Karen Gant for securing CONGRATS TO OUR VERY OWN BARBARA the Easter Bunny for the drive-by portion of DARBY ON BEING ELECTED SOUTHERN the Easter Celebration! PRAYER CORNER “Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you; but I will teach you the good and the right way.” I Samuel 12:23 We all need prayer! Let us lift one another up in prayer without ceasing. Several of our Silhouettes have had or are awaiting surgery, others have had health challenges or have lost beloved family members. I have not listed specific names to respect individual privacy and HIPAA rules. But I do ask that you let me know when you have a special need for prayer and expressions of support and love. We will shower you with cards! CHAPTER ACTIVITIES & EVENTS EASTER CELEBRATION:VIRTUAL PROGRAM WITH A DRIVE BY We would not be denied a second year by the Pandemic. Believing that “Where there is a will, there is a way”, Silhouettes were creative and planned a fantastic Easter Celebration! The children celebrated the Risen Christ, as did the adults, with a virtual program and drive by to pick up beautiful Easter Baskets at the Fraternity House. The virtual program included a Welcome by the Chair and Co-chair, Silhouettes Yvonne & Felita, a prayer by Master Romeo Emanuel, Games led by Silhouette Victoria (M & M Game and the Bunny Name Game), the Easter Story by Kappa Rashad Reed, Jesus’ Resurrection Video provided by Silhouette Lisa and Closing Remarks by Silhouette Barbara. 4
KAPPAS & SILHOUETTES CELEBRATE VALENTINE'S DAY! Kappas and their Silhouettes and sweethearts enjoyed an evening of fellowship and fun virtually. Entertainment was provided by NATIONAL SILHOUETTES NEWS musical artist Akia Uwanda! If you are not receiving information from the National Silhouettes, it means that you most likely have not registered on the National Silhouettes Website. Every member must complete the registration to be added to the mailing list. Thanks to each of our 45 members who became financial with the chapter this year.
