Yes No Provide details of policies and procedures Harvey Norman has adopted a corporate policy for the procurement of all packaging material. Most of this material is used to ship products purchased online via our e-commerce websites. However the policy is also extended to products used in the corporate office such as stationery and other packaging materials. 9. We have begun preliminary work with a Victorian company, but at this stage we have no formal mattress recycling program.

Our survey results outlined that in 83% of cases, our delivery contractors removed the waste packaging materials from the customers homes'. This packaging material was then brought back to the warehouses where it was disposed of appropriately in our recycling collection points. Whilst this result was very pleasing, Harvey Norman is committed to achieving 90% collection of customer's packaging.

This consultant has been engaged to look at Harvey Norman's waste management program as a whole. Some specific areas of analysis will include the identification of other recylcing opportunties, such as mattresses recycling. Also, the consultants will look to apply for government grants on behalf of Harvey Norman to fund or partially fund cardboard balers and other recycling collection assets to assist in increasing waste diversion. This work is planned to continue throughout 2014. At the end of this piece of work, Harvey Norman will consider putting at least 10 stores through an environmental certification program. The result of this work will be reported in the 2014 annual report to the APC. 3. The results are then internally communicated to all stores via our National Administration team. Therefore our internal assessment has come directly from our waste recycling reports. Harvey Norman is also in the process of drafting a Company Waste Policy which is currently being reviewed by our legal and policy committee. This policy will assist in the influence of and maximising diversion of waste from landfill. 25. Yes No If yes, please give examples of other product stewardship outcomes Yes we have implemented E Waste at all stores for the purpose of collecting E Waste in the from of TV,s and Computers to be collected and sent to registerd recyclers under the product stewardship scheme. During the reporting period 68.4 tonnes were collected. 26. Describe any constraints or opportunities that affected performance under this KPI Public demand for our E waste and TV waste service has been remarkably high. Whilst this is an extremely positive outcome, we are constrained by the size of the collection points at certain sites. E-waste and TV waste is collated into specially designed secure waste cages located at each store. These cages are constrained in size, suited to the specific location. KPI 8: Reductions in packaging items in the litter stream. 27. We still aim to host our second business clean up day in the next reporting period. Our previous event involved franchised stores hosting a clean up day in their local community.
28. Describe any constraints or opportunities that affected performance under this KPI As a franchisor, we can only provide a recommendation to our franchisees to undertake tasks such as this. We are continually encouraging our franchisees and their staff to be involved in such activities. Your Experiences This section lets you share with us any achievements, good news stories and areas of difficulties in making progress against your plan and the Covenant goals and KPIs. 29. Key achievements or good news stories Have implemented removing Polystyrene ( 8.83 tonnes ) from general waste which then gets compressed and sent overseas to be used for products such as picutre frames, outdoor furniture etc. We have succesfully implemented National E Waste solution diverting 68 tonnes from landfill. We have created an online waste E learning module specifically outlining how to maximise recycling. Through increased awareness, training and reporting we have increased our recylcing ratio to 30%. We are in the process of implementing a more controlled process fo rthe recycling of white goods. We now have over 80% of all stores under 3 contracted state based waste providers which gives us more visibility over reporting and working with waste providers in the area of maximising recycling opportunities. Taking on all our recommendations and implementing our systems a store has greatly reduced; 1. The number of scheduled pick ups. 2. Increased recycling to landfill ratio. 3. Areas of difficulties in making progress against your plan, Covenant goals or KPIs We would like to see waste diversion become part of our cultural behaviour at all stores. This is a constant work in progress and we are continuing to put process, measures and accountability in place to continue driving this improvement. Mattress recycling has been difficult and we have experienced some delays and setbacks with our contractors' businesses ceasing, however we continue to work on this waste stream.
