SkillsWest skillswestexpo.com.au Welcome to the Expo Welcome message from Minister for Education and Training Making quality training accessible to all Western Australians is a core focus of the McGowan Labor Government, and due to our significant investment we are training like never before. Quality jobs are being created in the State each day, and the high demand for skilled workers is providing new and exciting pathways for job seekers and career changers. Our Government has been working hard to help Western Australians make the most of these opportunities by offering affordable training for industries where there are jobs in demand. Through our "Lower fees, local skills" initiative, we have slashed course fees for 180 vocational education and training qualifications by up to 72 per cent. The results are clear. More than 78,000 students are in vocational education and training courses in Western Australia right now, a 25 per cent increase compared to last year. In addition, we are currently undergoing the biggest TAFE capital works program in Western Australian history which is improving campuses all across WA. The State Government believes in quality and affordable training and is a proud supporter of the SkillsWest Careers & Employment Expo and the 2021 WorldSkills Australia National Championships. The SkillsWest Expo is a great reminder of our training system’s important end-goal to help Western Australians find employment and make their dream careers a reality. Staff from the Jobs and Skills Centres and TAFE colleges will be on-hand to provide training information, including on apprenticeships and traineeships, or you can find out more at www.jobsandskills.wa.gov.au. We are also preparing for the WorldSkills Australia National Championships and Skills Show which will further showcase the quality courses and skills training available. It has never been easier to get a qualification in Western Australia and if you are looking for some career inspiration the SkillsWest Expo may just provide it. Hon. SkillsWest skillswestexpo.com.au What it’s like to have a Career in Construction The Persistence Pathway Pays Off. Jonty and Cheyenne, both 18, are making significant inroads into their careers in construction after graduating from the Motivation Civil & Mining Academy. Jonty is a trainee at civil mining and underground contractor at Cape and has tickets to drive and operate a roller, a water cart, a loader and an excavator, while Cheyenne is a trainee at Boral, working as a scheduler, booking in trucks, and ordering aggregate and bitumen for road projects. Both women are already smashing their career goals and earning good money, but like most, their journeys so far have not been without challenges and obstacles to overcome. Jonty, who was born with Cerebral palsy and has limited use of her right arm, says with braces and small modifications, she’s been able to safely use equipment and she feels empowered by her ability to solve problems. “I can do everything you can do, I just have to add a few more steps,” Jonty says, adding that she feels supported in her new role to speak up and ask for the modifications she needs to do her job safely. If I see a problem, I don’t see it as a failure, I work around it to find a solution. I never thought when I finished school I’d be When Cheyenne, who loves sport and travel, started high school doing this.” she did not have a career in mind, but had such a positive experience with the Motivation Foundation trainers, she decided For now, she says, she would encourage high school students who on civil construction. are struggling at school to consider a career in civil construction. “Know your limits, find ways to work around an issue and challenge “The trainers always made me feel like I could do things,” she yourself,” she says. “For kids not doing well at mainstream studies, says. “That motivated me to try harder at school. She would have no hesitation in recommending civil construction to others, including girls, and says persistence is crucial. “I’d say, make sure when you get on a pathway, stick with it, don’t give up,” Cheyenne says. “A lot of people give up. My parents have encouraged me to keep striving, to keep trying even if I get knocked back. Things won’t always work out but try again.” Construction Training Fund funds training places at Motivation Foundation, which offers secondary students from diverse backgrounds an opportunity to transition from school to work. The program ensures participants get the training and skills they need, including becoming job ready, while the program coaches, mentors and connects young people with future employers.
