The narrow 6-5 favorite ($4.60) swept to the lead
at the three-sixteenth pole and cruised under the
wire in 1:54.71.
"When it was time to move, he was there for me,"
Franco said. "I had to pull him up to make him stop
(on the gallop-out)."
While trainer Linda Rice had originally planned
to target the Wood with the New York-bred Arctic
Arrogance, who was second last year in the Remsen
Stakes (G2), also at 1 1/8 miles at Aqueduct. Yet
after Saturday's loss, she said the March 4 Gotham
Stakes (G3) at one-turn mile would be next.
"Another nice race," she said about a colt with two
wins and four seconds in six starts and who picked
up eight Derby points to give him 16. "The horse that
won was better but I think it's possible this horse is
better at a one-turn mile, and rather than wait for
the Wood, we may run in the Gotham, because that
might be his best distance, and we'll take it from
there."
General Banker was third (six points, nine total),
6 1/4 lengths behind Hit Show, followed by Andiamo
a Firenze (four, seven), and Prove Right (two). BH
