25PUBLICITY AWARDS
Given to donkeys and mules who have successfully promoted donkeys and mules to the
general public and so raised their profile and awareness.
OAKVILLE SOPHIE MULE PUBLICITY AWARD
Zebe of Braywin, Robin Winter
.Zebe has been to a number of events which showcase what mules can do as well as
getting out into the public arena. She is trained to a high level of performance and demon-
strates what a well-trained saddle mule can do; how well it can behave; and how pleasant
it can be to ride.
Zebe of Braywin went to an Armistice Day Memorial Ceremony at Loburn to commemo-
rate the wonderful contribution mules made to the Second World War. Ben Longwell
from True West Horsemanship ran sessions showcasing mules at Equidays in Christchurch
and he asked if he could use Zebe of Braywin to demonstrate what a well-trained mule
can do. There was much public interest in his sessions with Zebe.
Zebe of Braywin goes on recreational rides and in doing so, demonstrate to those she
meets, (and who often have not seen a mule before, or one being ridden), How a mule
can go under saddle. She also goes for rides in her local forest and along the beach and
river rides. Zebe of Braywin went to two shows this season competing in the showing and
In Hand performance sections.
SOUTH ISLAND DONKEY PUBLICITY AWARD
Fidel of The Croft, Alison Holcroft.
Fidel is a lovely 18 year old white donkey owned by Alison Holcroft. Originally Fidel was
used for donkey rides at a Wildlife Park. He was overused there and got to the point
where he disliked children so was sold on. A friend of Alison’s bought him but had no-
where to keep him so gave him to Alison. It took Alison a long time to rehabilitate Fidel,
now he loves children again.
Fidel has been on the television programme Fanimals and has taken part in the Christmas
Eve Service at the All Saints Church in Merivale. Fidel was the star of the show at both
events. He also went to church for the Saint Francis day blessing of the animals. He has
given rides at church on another occasion. Fidel has had his photo in the local paper show-
ing him being ridden. Fidel has done an outstanding job in raising the public profile of the
humble donkey
26NORTH ISLAND PUBLICITY AWARD
Clovercrest Panache, Peter & Marion van Dijk
Clovercrest Panache has been involved in a lot of events and activities that show-
case donkeys to the public in various ways, as well as giving a lot back to the com-
munity. Panache is owned by Peter and Marion van Dijk who also bred her.
Clovercrest Panache welcomes groups of elderly or disabled people who visit her
home on a regular basis. The visitors have close contact with Panache who inter-
acts with them. This is very therapeutic for the visitors. Panache also visits the
Palms Rest Home and Hospital for their Christmas celebrations every year.
In November Panache welcomed 80 people from the Model A club on their car rally
and circulated amongst the visitors. Panache also took part in the Pukekohe Christ-
mas parade in harness pulling a cart.
In April and October Panache went on donkey walks in a park and on Waiwera
Beach. Panache also did a donkey display at the Pukekohe A&P show in February.
There was huge public interest in her. She has done outreach, social and public ac-
tivities showcasing donkeys in a really positive way over many years.

The Young Achiever award is to recognise and encourage all our young people 4 – 16
years in all areas of promoting the donkey or mule
