Ashwaubenon High School Into the Woods Director: Bernie Rocheleau Director: Helen Marcks Into the Woods is one of Stephen Sondheim’s most popular musicals, as he and writer James Lapine brilliantly bring favorite storybook characters together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece that’s become a rare modern classic. It’s also one of Sondheim’s most challenging musicals, but every year it appears again on our list of possibilities. With an exceptionally talented and musically skilled group of students this year, we were excited to finally tackle this Sondheim masterpiece. This musical has many underlying themes we all relate to in one way or another. We talked with our students about community and compassion, and how every one of us are going through personal things in our lives. With this feeling of community however, none of us are alone, and we need to be less self-focused and more sensitive to the needs of others. We took away many lessons from Into the Woods, like, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side; be happy with what you have; and as we all head out into the big world, let’s remember to take care of each other. 10
Denmark High School Brillion High School Godspell Mamma Mia! Director: Jonathan Kobs Mamma Mia! Here we go again! What a way to kick off the 2021-22 school year with some ABBA! Brillion High School is SO proud of the work our students have done on this show; it truly was a spectacle! Moreover, our production team, cast and tech crew took on the huge challenge of double casting the show in order to feature all of our talented students. Bravo to Cast A and Cast B for their dedicated and focused work to make this possible! Brillion High School’s Music and Drama Departments would not be able to enjoy its successes if it weren’t for our production staff, administration, parents and community for their incredible support of our students and the performing arts in our schools! Thank you! 11
De Pere High School Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical Director: Raquel Lopez De Pere High School’s Redbird Productions and their cast/crew of 80 students put on the musical Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical last fall! What they loved most about the show was learning how to portray little kids and adding in all of the technical elements! Redbird Productions believes in creating student-centered shows. We strive to provide students with opportunities to participate in real world, individual and collaborative, teamwork settings. Students are involved in the decisions, design and creation of every element in the production in order to truly make it their own. Students lead the production teams with feedback and guidance from the directors. The cast, crew and directors of Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical were thrilled to see your presence, hear your laughter and enjoyed your applause back in the theatre this year. Thank you for supporting the arts! 12
Denmark High School Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella (Broadway Version) Director: Jennifer Treu Center Stage Liason: Lucas Jordan Being able to put this show on stage after 2 years of not being able to have “normal” shows really brought the Denmark community together. The biggest goal this year was to get as many families and community members as possible to attend this production, or better yet to attend the production multiple times. What’s nice about a show like this is that it’s very family oriented with a familiar story that has more depth to it than people might expect, and that’s what makes this show so unique and magical. It uses its familiarity to pull people in, but once you’re sitting in the theater you’re transported to a totally new world full of music, drama, love and hopefulness. The beauty and magic of Cinderella is what brought the Denmark community together this year. 13
Fond du Lac High School The Wizard of Oz Director: Steve Wilson Center Stage Liason: Cory Schneider The fall of 2021 was significant for music and theater departments at Fond du Lac High School for many reasons . . . foremost being that LIVE theater returned to our stage and our community! While there were SO many challenges we had to overcome, the biggest was being able to re-ignite that performance fire that burns in so many of us and our kids. Having had to isolate for an entire year did not make that process any easier. But what bound us together was exactly that - the shared experience of lockdown and a desire to return back to what gives purpose to so many lives. While there is much to be proud of, it was that struggle to return to performance “normality” that defined us and our production this year. 14
Fox Valley Lutheran High School Disney’s The Little Mermaid Director: Wendy Bixby Being a part of the Center Stage Program has played a significant role in the development of the theater program at FVL. The feedback from adjudicators, the student workshops and the additional performance opportunities for students has given our students exposure to the performing arts in new ways. Staging Disney’s The Little Mermaid has been one of our biggest challenges and one of our biggest rewards. With sixty percent of our cast new to high school theater, there were many hurdles to overcome, but the final product from the cast to the crew to the set to the costumes resulted in a cohesive and entertaining show that brought so much joy to those who were able to be a Part of our World! 15
Green Bay East High School The Drowsy Chaperone Director: Maureen DeFries-Tjoflat The Drowsy Chaperone is a comedy within a musical; full of funny clichés in a narrated walk down memory lane, featuring upbeat, jazz-style music and dance from the roaring 1920’s, a houseful of characters creating on- stage memories as described by the narrator - funny, dramatic and heartfelt moments. The Drowsy Chaperone was less familiar to students, and it has been a terrific piece to learn, to work on production aspects, explore the time period and create the shift from past and present as the story unfolds. Our students and staff have taken on big challenges and learned a great deal through the teamwork of telling this story! Among the many great moments, the narrator says, “...the show does what a musical is supposed to do: it takes you to another world. And it gives you a little tune to carry within your head, you know? A little something to help escape from the dreary aspects of the real world.” The students and directors worked to create that within our musical production of The Drowsy Chaperone. 16
Green Bay Southwest High School Mamma Mia! Director: Terry Martin Director: Tiffany Uitenbroek Despite over 75 years of total experience on our directing team, it is probably fair to say that none of us have had to deal with anything quite like trying to prepare a show during a pandemic before. This was new ground for us. We tried to constantly evaluate, and re-evaluate, so we could make wise decisions. We very much appreciate the grace so many of you gave us, despite the fact that you might have made those decisions differently. Because we knew at the beginning that the future was uncertain, one of our first instructions to our cast, crew and pit was to think not only of the final destination, but to enjoy the journey to get there. If we have all done that, then our show is already a success. We also hope that we have, in some small way, provided a climate that allowed each of our wonderful young participants a chance for growth in whatever portion of the production they chose. You are now all officially a part of the Green Bay Southwest High School Theater people! We, the directors, thank you all for allowing us to work with you and watch you grow. 17
Green Bay West High School Be More Chill Director: Amy Smejkal The cast and crew of Be More Chill exemplifies what theater is meant to be. They came together as a very diverse group and created a place where people felt free to take risks and explore their art in a supportive and positive environment. Be More Chill is about a group of teenagers trying to find their place in the world and struggling between being “popular” or being themselves. This cast and crew portrayed a complex group of characters and worked together to create a wonderful learning environment where everyone could shine. Green Bay West has about 830 students from diverse backgrounds. The upperclassmen of the cast and crew mentored the younger students and this led to a very smooth production. Be More Chill is unique in that the whole cast acts as crew in terms of moving stage elements throughout this fast-paced show. Every single member had a hand in making the show a success. 18
Hortonville High School Freaky Friday Director: Joe Engels Driven by the magical powers of a treasured hourglass, a woman and her rebellious 16-year-old daughter swap bodies. When the hourglass accidently breaks, they must find a matching hourglass so that they can swap their bodies back and restore the natural order. Freaky Friday was such a fun show to put on at Hortonville High School this past fall. It was a fast-paced show with a lot of great songs that not only showcased our casts’ vocal abilities, but also allowed for some fun and high energy choreography that allowed the cast and chorus to really shine on stage. We also had dozens of students involved in every aspect of theatre, including stage crew, hair, make-up, costumes, ticket sales, ushering, lights, sound and more. It was a great experience! 19
Kaukauna High School The Theory of Relativity Director: Joy Paffenroth I am so proud of our production of The Theory of Relativity! The journey was certainly a special one. Someone asked me how/why I chose this show... and honestly, I stumbled upon it on the MTI website and that’s where it all began. Given the unknowns of how this school year would go, I was looking for something that kept our circle small—and this fit the bill—no sets, no costumes, no choreography. Even without those elements, this show spoke to me. It tells important stories of humanity that ALL of us need to hear. We are so disconnected from each other right now—technology, COVID, political differences, all of it keeps us apart. The stories will remind you of why we need to be connected to each other even more these days. It’s always a gamble when a director chooses a show that no one knows, but this cast embraced the challenge and gravity of this show. They dove in right from the start and impressed me daily with their work ethic, determination, creativity and support for each other. 20
Little Chute High School Sister Act Director: Dan Van Eperen This fall’s production of Sister Act at Little Chute was like medicine for our school community. After a few years off from live performances, we were able to perform this production for sold out audiences. While the students enjoyed the new experience last spring of producing a movie, there is nothing quite like the rush that is felt from live theater. With that being said, after taking a few years off from shows, and losing out on the growth from having our kids working on shows during that time, I was curious to see how our program would bounce back, but I must say, I was thrilled with the fact that I didn’t feel like our program took a step back in the quality of show we were able to produce. Hopefully this performance, and the energy it instilled in our community, will springboard us into the future. 21
Luxemburg-Casco High School Shrek The Musical Director: Katie Ludolph Director: Margaret Meder Luxemburg-Casco High School was proud to present Shrek the Musical this spring. Students were ready to produce a whimsical fairytale creature show. In many ways it allowed us all to play and forget about challenges the world around us has faced in the last several years. Many also found it meaningful to be part of a story in which “inclusion” and “acceptance for who we are” are the main themes. 75 students participated in Shrek the Musical - that’s an eighth of our entire student body! There were over 200 costumes in total, as many students had many roles. We had many students whom this was their first time being on the stage, or having a solo. We were delighted to give performances for our Intermediate School and parade in the primary, intermediate and middle schools. Thank you Center Stage for the opportunities and outreach you provide. 22
Mishicot High School Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Director: Tracy Bauer Our fall production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was just what our students needed to have fun and reunite on the stage after last year’s virtual show. From a senior crew member turned sheep, to rehearsal surprises during “Benjamin’s Calypso”, we created lifelong memories together that we will cherish forever. We’d also like to take a moment to pay tribute to our Zebulon/Butler/ soloist of “Those Canaan Days”: Paxton Armbruster, who passed away on February 15th this year. Paxton was very much a part of our theater family since sixth grade. He played Aladdin in Aladdin Jr., Simba in The Lion King Jr., Troy Bolton in High School Musical Jr. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was his first high school show. To quote Dear Evan Hansen, “Words fail,” when we try to describe his impact and how much we miss him. 23
Neenah High School Legally Blonde The Musical Director: Kathleen McCurdy Center Stage Liason: Aaron Hoffmann Legally Blonde the Musical was the perfect way to kick off the year at Neenah High School. It enabled us to explore bias, self perception and confidence while allowing students to tackle complex music and challenging choreography. Just like the musical’s message, there is much more to Legally Blonde the Musical than expected. Throughout the entire process of this show, our students learned that they can persevere while supporting and uplifting each other and personally grow and succeed. When up against various challenges that seemed insurmountable, these students continued to work together and stayed POSITIVE. “What, like it’s hard?!” 24
New London High School Into the Woods Director: Tiffany Schulz Center Stage Liason: Kevin Spindler Even though Into the Woods comes across as simplistic by the morphing of many fairy tales together, Stephen Sondheim’s music is very complex. We wanted our performance to come across as fun-loving and effortless as possible. This became not only the challenge but, the goal. This musical was absolutely perfect for the cast of characters who had auditioned. We wanted to show our community that New London’s Musical Theatre Program is still alive and thriving through the pandemic times. We are truly grateful to be able to have done the Into the Woods production for the reason that it had given us new insights to hard work and to greater perspectives than we had realized. Students were thrilled with how the show had exceeded expectations and brought our musical theatre family together once more. “Happy ever after…I wish.” 25
Notre Dame de la Baie Academy Footloose Director: Andrea Gilson Center Stage Liason: Chris Salerno Notre Dame Academy was thrilled to produce the musical, Footloose. The production involved over 75 students. Students were thrilled to learn complex choreography and embrace the characters behind this heart-warming show. NDA students loved being part of the Center Stage Program and building a community within the cast/crew as well as with students from other schools. After a year of hybrid and in-person learning, the NDA cast, crew and pit orchestra of Footloose put in more hours of practice than ever, putting their heart and souls into performing this show. 26
Preble High School Sister Act Director: Megan Sweeney Preble Players Theater was proud to be back on the stage this year, live and in person, in Sister Act! This show embraces the idea of family, friendship and standing up for those you love. Sister Act brought the Preble musical family together after several years of uncertainty and unfortunate tragedy. We challenged ourselves with new roles, new directors and new technology, and the result was a high-energy, uplifting production! Preble Players Theater is excited to again be a part of the Center Stage High School Musical Theater Program. 27
Pulaski High School Footloose Director: Amy Tubbs Pulaski High School was so pleased to present Footloose this year. The upbeat music, singing and dancing energized everyone involved and our audiences. The message of healing, forgiveness and finding the joy in living life again reflected how we felt at nearing the end of the pandemic. We loved performing for big audiences again. Pulaski is grateful to be part of the Center Stage High School Musical Theater Program, especially for the learning experiences. No matter their skill level, everyone is welcome to be a part of theater in Pulaski. Veteran performers, crew and musicians help the newer members learn and perform at high levels. The directing team is proud of this production of Footloose and everyone who participated. 28
St. Francis Xavier High School Little Shop of Horrors Director: Jim Romenesko Center Stage Liason: Anna Van Eperen At Xavier, what we love about musical theater is that it involves students actively engaging in the coordination of many different art forms at one time. Students who sing, dance, design lighting, run sound, operate puppets, sew costumes, apply makeup, take photos and organize publicity and social media come together to create an incredible production. We work hard to make sure students are able to lead as many facets of the show as possible. As a result, students take on the responsibility of the show and have a greater sense of pride in the final product. We try our best to model productions after the shows they see on tour at the P.A.C., instilling a sense of professionalism in everything they do. We are so honored and excited to be part of Center Stage this year! 29
St. Mary Catholic High School The Addams Family Director: Eric Conner It is exciting to be back in-person and watching live theater again. The Addams Family is a “spooktacular” musical comedy that embraces the macabre nature of the family that we all have grown up with and loved over many decades, and turns it into a wonderful story about growing up and embracing the new. The musical has a wonderful score with energetic and show stopping musical numbers. Students at SMCS have done a wonderful job diving into the uniqueness of each character to develop each as their own. It’s been an enjoyable journey to put this show together with all the moving parts and talented cast and crew. 30
Southern Door High School Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Director: Catrina Williamson Center Stage Liason: Bonnie Weydt The directors and students were excited to bring back Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat for our first live theater performances at Southern Door in 2 years. It involved more than 75 high school and middle school students in the cast, crew and pit orchestra. We are also grateful for our community and family members - many who have a history of 25 years or more volunteering their time and talent. For the past four years we have double-cast our shows, allowing more students to be involved and offering more opportunities for lead roles. In addition, the students who share the same part develop a cooperative learning relationship: drawing from each other’s strengths and bolstering each other’s weaknesses. Because of the ensemble nature of the show, all of the students played 2 - 3 roles! 31
Weyauwega-Fremont High School School of Rock Director: Molly Suehs The Weyauwega-Fremont School District has a reputation for developing the theatrical character of our students throughout their school career. The drama department feels that theater is integral to the growth and development of all students K-12, and offers students opportunities to perform at all grade levels. Many students in this production have been performing since they were in first grade and have developed a mature understanding of character development. Many were asked to challenge themselves by being placed in roles that they have not found themselves in before. This not only resulted in a great show, but also a great theater student! 32
Winnebago Lutheran Academy Bye Bye Birdie Director: Andrew Mildebrandt This past fall we moved forward with musical theater once again with our production of Bye Bye Birdie! We had many newcomers to our group from incoming freshman to seniors who had their first ever musical auditions filling some main roles for us. In spite of the scheduling challenges, as we have actors who are also involved in other activities, our WLA theatre family was able to come together to produce a wonderful rendition of this favorite classic of musical satire for our audiences, and also make some wonderful memories both on and off the stage. 33
