SHED NEWS - Men's Sheds of WA
Important Health Article, provided by Cancer Council WA

'I would never have known, I had no symptoms'
Cancer Council WA is calling for more Western
Australians to complete the free life-saving
bowel screening test, with new figures
showing only four in 10 eligible Australians are
participating in Australia’s National Bowel
Cancer Screening Program.
Bowel cancer is Australia’s second biggest
cancer killer. Many people don’t realise it kills
more Australians each year than breast,
prostate or skin cancer. When you receive the
test don’t put it in the cupboard and forget
about it - delaying can easily become ignoring,
forgetting and ultimately not doing.
The test is quick, simple and you can complete
it in the comfort of your own home.
Andrew McCann, who was diagnosed with
bowel cancer in 2017, said he owes his life to
the test kit.
“When I first got a kit I nearly didn’t do it but
my wife urged me to participate and I am so
glad I did,” Mr McCann said.
“I needed to have a follow up colonoscopy and in 2017 I was diagnosed with bowel cancer. I would never have
known, I had no symptoms at the time. The kit saved my life.”
Over 90 per cent of bowel cancer cases can be successfully treated if caught in the early stages.

4 Easy steps that could save your life
No one looks forward to getting up close and personal with their poo, but if you are aged 50-74 years, spending a
little quality time with your “No.2” every couple of years could save your life.
Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in Australia, with your risk increasing significantly from the age of
 50.
The good news is, if found early, nine out of 10 bowel cancers can be successfully treated. The National Bowel
Cancer Screening Program helps to catch cases in the early stages when people don’t have any symptoms.
Australians aged 50 to 74 years will receive a free bowel home test kit in their mailbox every two years. The test
 is quick, simple, and convenient.
If you are about to turn 50, or you have received a home test kit before and never gone through with the process,
here are a few things you need to know:
 • Bowel cancer often develops without any symptoms
 • You do the test kit in the comfort of your own home
 • If we could improve participation from its current rate of 40 per cent to just 60 per cent, we could save
        84,000 lives by 2040
 • Every half an hour, someone in Australia is diagnosed with bowel cancer. Don’t let it be you. Do the test.
If you want more information, please visit www.cancerscreening.gov.au or call the Bowel Cancer Screening
 Program Information Line on 1800 118 868.

Earlier this year we commissioned a series of promotional Men's Sheds videos that talk about the
different values and aspects of Men's Sheds and why they're so valuable to the community.
There are six videos in the series:
                 • About Men's Sheds • Why join a shed • Sheds are for listening
                 • Sheds are for all of us • Not just woodwork • Sheds are for helping
They are all available on our YouTube channel.
Sheds are welcome to use these videos to promote their own Shed.

SHED NEWS - Men's Sheds of WA
Important Health Article, provided by The Regional Men’s Health Initiative

Warrior Wellbeing - Blokes and Dehydration
We’ve all heard the old rule of thumb “8 glasses of water per day”. We shouldn’t be surprised to learn that this is an
approximation for the average person and doesn’t consider gender or lifestyle. In fact, eight glasses a day might
actually be leaving us dehydrated and the average intake for blokes might have to be revised upwards to about
13 glasses.
Men generally require more water than women due to their (on average) higher fat free mass and energy
expenditure. Physical activity is a major influencer of water consumption in the body, the more physical activity we
do the more we need to hydrate. We get thirsty once we start to dehydrate so, during exercise its important to keep
up our liquid intake prior to feeling those pangs of thirst.
Climate is another consideration. Obviously, someone with a desk job has lower hydration requirements than a
boilermaker working in a confined space in summer in the Pilbara. What is not so obvious is the fact that the desk
jockey may have elevated water requirements due to air-conditioning; the dry air increases the body’s water needs.
We do get some of our daily water requirements through our food, as many fruits and vegetables have a high-water
content, i.e. watermelon, tomato, cucumber etc. We can also count flavoured drinks as some of our intake, but
water is the preferred option. Drinks with a high sugar content should be avoided, and before anyone says, “Well,
three beers is a litre!” there’s an important distinction to make. Coffee and beer are examples of diuretics
(substances which make us pee) therefore regardless of the intake there may be a nett loss happening. For example,
for every 200ml of full-strength beer consumed, you pee around 320ml. That works out to drinking a six-pack and
peeing 10 stubbies!
What Can We Do?
• Assume we are dehydrated; it is so common as to almost be the norm.
• Drink around 13 glasses of water per day, more if you are doing physically demanding work or sweating
      profusely.
• During exercise drink every 15 minutes to pre-empt dehydration.
• Use your pee as an indicator. Pale or straw-coloured is ok; yellow means dehydrated, and dark or verging on a
brown colour is a sign of severe dehydration.
• Water is by far the best form of hydration. The electrolytes in sports drinks are also present in a balanced diet.
Sports drinks only have a role for endurance athletes who, during an event, push beyond the body’s natural
      stores of minerals.
• When calculating water intake, consider the effects of
diuretics like alcohol and caffeine. Remember “Drink 6
      Pee 10”.

Keeping on top of dehydration is more than just drinking heaps
of water. We need to understand that at different times, our
hydration demands fluctuate. We need to be active observers of
our bodies and take responsibility for keeping it in peak working
order.

Your exclusive invitation to join our Facebook group
We need to make sure we can reach out to our members in different ways at different times, to check in and to
share news.
One way we can do this is to bring the same sense of community, friendship and support of the Sheds to our online
community in Facebook.
Over 150 members from over 50 different sheds in WA have joined our community Facebook group giving us a
platform where we can share what we know and learn from others. Empowering sheds to communicate with each
other and tap into the knowledge, experience and resources available to us whenever you want.
We invite you to join the group https://www.facebook.com/groups/mensshedswa/ We look forward to seeing you
there.
To access the group, you need a Facebook account.

The Shedders’ Pledge
The Pledge
To treat everyone with respect, acknowledging that I will act in good faith and in the best interest
of our Shed members.

To value fairness, independence and generosity of spirit as dearly as mateship.

To work as a team to be a valuable contributor to the local community. By doing so our Shed
provides opportunities for community, connection and participation that help to support the health
and wellbeing of all members.

What is it?
The Shedders’ Pledge is the foundation for the Shed’s Code of Conduct.

It acknowledges that all members of the Shed and attendees at a Shed meeting must be there
with good intentions and is a commitment to work in the best interest of fellow members for their
combined health and wellbeing.

The Pledge is a shared commitment from members stating that they will conduct themselves in a
positive and productive manner in work, discussion and debate knowing that they are amongst
honoured friends.

The supporting mechanisms
The supporting mechanisms for the Shedders’ Pledge should include formal documents including:

• Code of Conduct* for the Shed and Shed Management.

• Grievance Procedure - in the Model Rules or Constitution.

• Complaints policy

*Currently being drafted by Men’s Sheds of WA

ENTER TO WIN
In May this year we sought feedback from Sheds on the proposed Shedders' Pledge. Now we're inviting you to
join the launch competition. Details on page 12 of this newsletter.
Keep Western Australia beautiful with Containers for Change

Containers for Change, Western Australia’s container deposit scheme, will help increase recycling rates and reduce
litter. A 10-cent refund will be given for each eligible container, encouraging recycling and creating a cleaner
Western Australia for everyone.
When Containers for Change launches, you will be able to return your eligible empty containers for a 10-cent refund,
which you can either collect yourself or donate to a charity, community group and not-for-profit registered with the
scheme.

Should you start collecting containers now?
No. The 10-cent refund will only apply to eligible containers purchased or collected as litter on or after 1 October.
Until then you should continue to recycle your containers through the yellow lid kerbside bin.
Containers for Change Refund Point operators will have discretion to reject containers they reasonably believe were
supplied prior to scheme commencement. In addition, if you are returning 1,500 or more containers you will be
required to sign a declaration stating that the containers you are returning are eligible: that they were purchased or
collected as litter on or after the scheme start date.

Can your Shed make money from this scheme?
From 1 October, not-for-profit organisations, social enterprises, community groups and sporting groups will be able
to register to receive donations when people return their containers.
Community and not-for-profit organisations can also register to be a Donation Point in their own right, using a cage
or bin to collect eligible containers.
