CLUB NEWS Editor’s note Dear Members, Our preparation for our move to Sime is starting to pick up, and we have confirmed the date that our Facilities Sharing Agreement is to be signed, as you will see in this issue’s updates. We are also starting to move forward, and we have completed our space planning for the clubhouse at Sime. The next step will be to get the approvals for the various facilities we have planned for, as well as getting the necessary tenders out as we get ready for the renovation to start when we take over Sime golf course and the Clubhouse next year. Keppel Charity Golf is now only a month away, and this year’s event will be especially memorable, given that it is the last time we will be hosting this key annual event on our Bukit Chermin golf course. We appreciate the generosity of our members in coming together to do our part for the less fortunate. Finally, with over 80% of the population vaccinated, we will hopefully see a gradual relaxation of measures in Singapore, and be able to enjoy more activities with our friends and families. Still, it is important that we continue to keep vigilant, monitoring our own health and taking the necessary precautions, like continuing to wear our masks, and disinfecting our hands regularly. The objective of this FSA is to facilitate the working arrangements and relationship of SICC and Keppel Club with regard to the common areas like the public road and other infrastructure, as well as the operations, given the proximity of the two clubs and the interwoven nature of the Sime and Bukit golf courses. After many months of discussion and negotiation, we have finally confirmed the details of the FSA, and are pleased to announce that this will be signed on Sep 14, 2021. This signing will bring us one step closer to the completion of a major milestone, with the next step being the signing of the Lease Agreement. Keppel Links • September 2021 5

I will miss that very much.” Several Keppel friends hosted farewell golf games and lunches for Kaori. A group did something special which moved her. The brainchild of Mrs Jeannette Chan, an e-farewell card was specially designed and presented to her at Tee Top on Aug 14. In it were messages from the group. CLUB NEWS COVID-19 measures to keep serving members safely Our staff helping to check members' vaccination status before they dine in. A take-away pick-up point has also been set up outside of Tee Top. Through the evolving COVID-19 situation in Singapore, we have constantly been putting forth every effort in order to keep members and staff alike safe in line with the latest advisories from the government. This includes regularly administering the Actigen Rapid Test (ART) self-test kits to our F&B staff following the announcement from the government that this was to be done alongside relaxing of measures for dining out. We have also been working hard to keep updated on our staff’s status, and have in many cases chosen to err on the side of caution—for example, when family of some of our staff were flagged for quarantine or stay-home- notice, we would immediately send Tee Top, to ensure that we adhere to to keep our fellow Keppelites safe them to do a swab test, going beyond the requirements set by the authorities. amidst these tumultuous times, and the advice given by the authorities. GOLF NEWS A simple National Day on the golf course Despite the National Day game being played as a simpler social game, members still showed up adorned in patriotic red and white, or carrying flags to get in the spirit of the game. Until COVID-19 came along, our National Day game every year was quite a grand affair as we celebrated our nation’s birthday. It was—and still is—a much- loved event. There would be a flag-raising ceremony before the start of the game. We would recite the National Pledge. And we would watch the grand National Day parade and the Flypasts on a large TV screen as we sat down for dinner after the game. This year, however, the scene was different because of the raging pandemic. The event was like any other social game. There was no fanfare. The only hint that it was our annual National Day game was a sea of red and white attire. Even amidst hushed celebrations, members of Keppel Club did not quell their excitement and pride. The society was founded in 1996 by a group of doctors and caregivers and opened Singapore’s first community-based Parkinson Centre in 2013 to provide the much-needed support beyond hospitals. Currently the second most common neurodegenerative disorder in Singapore, there is currently no cure for Parkinson but medications and therapies such as physiotherapy, speech and occupational therapy can help alleviate symptoms and slow down the deterioration. To this end, PSS offers a wide range of therapeutic programmes, social and recreational activities to help PwP live better with Parkinson. A charity registered with National Council of Social Service and an Institution of Public Character, PSS relies heavily on donations to continue supporting the local Parkinson community. GOLF NEWS Our beneficiaries Keppel Charity Golf 2021 Reach Community Services REACH Community Services Society was founded in 1998 by Grace Assembly of God to help the Least, the Lost, and the Lonely in the community. REACH was registered as a charitable organisation in 1999 and has been an approved Institution of Public Character (IPC) since 2009. REACH offers community programmes and services through our six touchpoints. We strive to inspire hope and empower change in vulnerable families, distressed couples, at-risk youths, and lonely seniors through our four core pillars: Family Service, Counselling Service, Youth Service and Senior Service. We aim to support families through financial assistance, casework and counselling; build lasting marriages through marital counselling; empower at-risk youths through mentoring sessions and engagement programmes; and aid our elderly to age gracefully through community projects. To find out more about the work REACH does, please visit https://www.reach.org.sg/. Singapore Cancer Society Established in 1964, Singapore Cancer Society is a self-funded voluntary welfare organisation which provides patient care services to needy cancer patients through its welfare, hospice home care, cancer treatment subsidy and rehabilitation support programmes. In addition, the Society also provides free cancer screening services and promotes cancer awareness and prevention through its public education and community outreach programmes. Singapore Disability Sports Council The Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC) caters to the needs of persons across a diverse range of disabilities. Founded in 1973, SDSC runs community, developmental and high performance programmes seven days a week, 365 days a year, to help persons with disabilities receive therapy and discover their talents through sports. The SDSC is the only organisation in Singapore which reaches across all disability groups, offering a wide range of more than 20 sports at both elite and non-elite levels. SDSC is heartened to be benefiting more than 300 athletes with disabilities weekly, and more than 1000 persons with disabilities annually. Inspirational individuals have emerged from our programmes and services, such as Yip Pin Xiu, Singapore’s first Paralympic gold medallist and up-and-coming Boccia athlete Aloysius Gan, who has been playing the sport since he was eight years old. As a charity and an Institution of Public Character, SDSC depends on donations to sustain and continue its programmes. Society for the Aged Sick Society for the Aged Sick (SAS) is a non-profit nursing home that provides long-term residential and respite care services for the elderly, especially the less-privileged. With a team of committed healthcare professionals and caregivers, we believe in adding years of quality life to our residents through holistic caregiving. Established in 1968 as a 16-bedded facility, we now have 404 beds in our current location. SPD Established in 1964, SPD is a charity in Singapore that seeks to enable people with disabilities of all ages to be as independent and self-reliant as possible, by providing services such as therapy, early intervention, employment and educational support, as well as case management so that they can participate in school, work and daily life within mainstream society. Continuing Keppel Club’s rich heritage KEPPEL HERITAGE Through this column, we have explored the various aspects of Keppel Club’s rich heritage, one that is built on many stories. Stories of the golf course’s expansion, and the revolutionary introduction of the monocart system in order to make the golfing experience more enjoyable to members. LIFESTYLE NEWS Singapore Food Culture Ba Kut Teh For yesterday’s dockside coolies and today’s deskbound workers, a bowl of piping hot Bak Kut Teh is comfort food for the soul. In Singapore, Bak Kut Teh is often eaten with a bowl of fragrant steamed white race and Chinese dough fritters. More discerning palates will also enjoy pairing the dish with preserved vegetables and braised bean curd skins. Introduced by enterprising Hokkien migrants during the 19th century, the original Bak Kut Teh was a cloudy soup scented with herbs and spices like garlic, cloves, and star anise. Chinese medicinal herbs and other ingredients like button mushrooms were found in the later Teochew and Cantonese variants. As more ingredients are added for flavour, Bak Kut Teh gradually evolved from a migrant’s simple meat bone broth to a locally rooted delicacy. Technology has also given this dish a new spin, and Bak Kut Teh sachets and instant mixes are a common find in Singapore’s supermarkets today. Keppel Links • September 2021 21
LIFESTYLE NEWS V ELLE R We invite members to share their anecdotes by sending their stories to: RA The Editor at http://keppelclub.com.sg/contact-us-feedback ’S Nagore Dargah – T TALES Singapore's 'hidden' shrine Photo credit: Nagore Dargah. By Tay Tian Wen, Correspondent As an avid traveller, I’ve often pondered: What sort of story can I tell my friends and family after my trip abroad? Often, I spin my own tales with an occasional hyperbole or two. But sometimes, a place tells its own story so compellingly it deserves to be unadulterated. And to think such a place exists here in Singapore, at the historic Nagore Dargah tucked away along Telok Ayer Street. Eponymously named Shahul Hamid Dargha after the South Indian holy man Shahul Hameed, the shrine was built in 1828 by early Indian-Muslim settlers as an expression of gratitude for their safe passage to Singapore. It was eventually renamed Nagore Dargah, in honour of the original shrine located in the Indian town of Nagore. At first glance, Nagore Dargah lives by its self- affixed description: a holy site built by devout Muslims who hailed from India’s Coromandel Coast, and a faithful replica of an original building, containing no bodily relic of Shahul Hameed. Three imposing square minarets topped with domes and spires drive home this impression. Inside, a gallery highlights many contributions made by Indian Muslims to Singapore’s early nation-building days. Photo credit: Nagore Dargah. 22 Keppel Links • September 2021
LIFESTYLE NEWS Photo credit: Nagore Dargah. But that’s how the people who have come and gone understand it. Look a little closer, and you’ll discover that the shrine itself has its own story to tell. Twin Corinthian pillars greet you when you first enter the premises. Once inside, notice the Islamic balustrade featuring mihrab-shaped niches. A set of Chinese double doors separate the main galleries , and large French windows adorn the side of the building adjacent to Boon Tat Street. Nagore Dargah is celebrated as a testament to Indian-Muslim zeal, but it’s also a showcase of Singapore’s eclectic mix of cultures that has gradually expanded over time. Situated on the same street as Thian Hock Keng temple and Al-Abrar Mosque, it also represents the racial and religious harmony Singapore struggled hard in its early days to achieve. Today, the place is a far cry from its dilapidated state three decades ago. Although Nagore Dargah was gazetted as a national monument in 1974, structural weakness forced it to shutter its doors until 2007, when it was finally converted into the heritage centre it is today. Since then, it has won both accolades and praise, including the national record for the longest spice line. So, which story about Nagore Dargah do you prefer? Pay a visit today and learn more about not only Indian- Muslim heritage, but Singapore’s early cosmopolitanism. Photo credit: Khaw Han Chung. Keppel Links • September 2021 23
SPORTS NEWS Build a stronger hip with these stay-at-home exercises Training a strong hip is important for keeping that power swing of yours in shape. As Covid-19 measures continue to adapt to the fluid situation, try these quick and easy exercises for an effective workout at home. As usual, exercise within your limits. Avoid repeating exercises if you experience any pain or discomfort. Consult a doctor immediately if pain persists. Unsure how to properly perform an exercise? Check in with our trainers. Butt Burners on-the-wall “Burners” refer to circuit exercises designed to “burn out” the targeted muscle. Done right, these exercises are all you need to build a stronger – and sexier - hip. Butt Burners come in different styles, and this one requires use of a wall for effect. Step 1 Start by leaning against the wall with the leg facing outside roughly 15 centimetres away from the wall. Keep your toes point slightly towards the wall. Step 2 Bend the knee leaning against the wall to 90 degrees. Your foot should be in the air. Step 3 Gradually bend forward at your hips. Keep a neutral spine position. Step 4: Push the leg touching the wall towards the wall as Photo credit: VenusFit hard as you can. Hold for 10 to 20 seconds. Glute Bridges Gluteal muscles are critical to hip flexibility and movement. If you’re often deskbound or lazing on the couch for long hours, a few reps of glute bridges is just the exercise you need to get your glutes active again. Glute bridges can cause spinal injuries if done incorrectly. If you are suffering from back problems, we highly recommend consulting with our trainers to make sure this exercise is appropriate for you. Want a tougher challenge? Try the steps below while keeping one knee up towards your chest. Step 1 Lie on your back. Bend you knees to a 90-degree angle. Keep your feet facing straight forward. Step 2 Lift your hips up without rotating your spine. Form a Photo credit: Coach Mag straight line from your shoulders, hip and knees. 24 Keppel Links • September 2021
SPORTS NEWS Frog pumps Few workouts are as tricky and rewarding as frog pumps. Great at isolating and strengthening the glutes, frog pumps can give you most bang for buck among any lower-body focused exercise when performed correctly. Step 1 Lie on your back and bring the soles of your feet together in a frog position. Move your feet as close to your butt as possible. Step 2 Clench your firsts and keep your elbows the the floor. If you’re using a dumbbell, rest it on your hips and hold it on either end. Step 3 Photo credit: Victorem Gear Draw your belly button downwards. You should feel some tension build up in your midsection. Step 5 Step 4 Squeeze your gluts and thrust your hips towards the ceiling. Press your lower back downwards and into the floor. Tuck your chin into your neck and press Step 6 down into the floor with the edges of your feet. Once at the top, slowly lower your butt. Repeat 5 to 10 times. Stork Turns A powerful golf swing requires not only strength but stability too. While other exercises on our list strengthen your swinging power, stork turns are all about stability and mobility instead. Step 1 Start by standing on one leg. Step 2 Then, lift your other leg and hook your foot behind the knee of your standing leg. Keep upright and make sure your upper body is as still as possible. Step 3 Rotate your bent knee across the standing leg and back out again. You should only feel movement in your lower body. Step 4: Repeat at least 3 sets of 8 to 10 repetitions on Photo credit: Knight Performance Factory each side. Keppel Links • September 2021 25
