What’s Coming This Season
DRAÍOCHT – VISUAL ARTS & ARTIST RESIDENCIES
Draíocht has two gallery spaces which are free to visit and open Monday to
Saturday 10am-6pm. Exhibiting until mid-October is ‘HOME’ which consists
of two complementary exhibitions: ‘More than Bricks and Mortar - Works
from the IMMA Collection’, and ‘Carrier of Memories’ by Ella Bertilsson and
Ulla Juske (pgs 50-51). Opening in November is ‘Mulhuddart Satellite’, an ASHLING SMITH ITB PAGE 49
exhibition by our Artist in Residence Michael McLoughlin, that explores place,
belonging, friendships and the connections we have to the people around
us (pgs 52-53). We are delighted to announce Ashling Smith as Draíocht’s
Inaugural Creative Digital Media Graduate Award Winner (pg 49). A free
screening of Marie Brett’s filmic artwork, Last Breath, a short film exploring
the experience of death and dying, takes place on 18 Oct (pg 48). And we
welcome Ceol Connected as Theatre Company in Residence for
2019 (pg 55).

DRAÍOCHT – CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE
                                                                                          EARLY YEARS MUSIC PAGE 38
Draíocht’s particular commitment to provide a range of opportunities for
children and young people to engage in, is based on the belief that all of us,
no matter how small, are entitled to access to arts and cultural experiences.
This season we continue our Early Years Workshops for ages 2-4 years, where
children can explore clay, shadow play and music (pg 38). We will partner with
Dublin 15 Community Centres to bring three shows for babies out into the
community, including ‘Little Tiny Xmas’, designed especially for children under
5 with complex needs (pg 39). The ever popular Christmas Workshops are
back (pg 41) as well as our Free Family Days (pg 40). Draíocht’s Artist in Your
Classroom Initiative continues for Primary Schools in D15 (pg 42) and we’ll
collaborate once again with the Irish Film Institute by screening a foreign film HOW TO CATCH A STAR PAGE 25
for Senior Cycle Students (pg 44). We’ll recruit some new members for our
D15 Youth Theatre with auditions taking place on 23 Sep (pg 45). Shows for
young people include ‘Night Light’ (pg 13), ‘The Young King’ (pg 16), ‘Lords
of Strut’ (pg 17) and ‘How to Catch a Star’ (pg 25).

DRAÍOCHT - PERFORMANCE PROGRAMME
Culture Night is back and to celebrate we’re screening three FREE films on our
impressive 4K cinema equipment (pg 10) as well as screenings throughout the
season of ‘Making the Grade’, ‘Cold War’, ‘Home Alone’ and ‘It’s a Wonderful
Life’ among others. Our major theatrical project, Home Theatre (Ireland),
                                                                                                 HOLY MARY PAGE 22
culminates in 90 performances in homes around D15 on the one night, 06
Oct (pg 36) and you can experience some of these plays as part of Dublin
Theatre Festival from 10-13 Oct (pg 15). This Season, music fans can enjoy
performances from Red Hurley, The 4 of Us, Christy Dignam, Declan O’Rourke
and comedy audiences are in for a treat with The Nualas, Colin Murphy and
Deirdre O’Kane. Ballet Ireland are back with The Nutcracker (pg 27) and

Quintessence Theatre use their innovative physical ensemble story-telling
techniques, mingled with multi-media platforms of film and music, to
poignantly explore the profound struggle individuals with mental illness face
on a daily basis in Ireland today. In this darkly comical and deeply moving new
play, an unsuccessful suicide attempt leaves young Leanne Dowd estranged
and attempting to pick up the pieces of a life still shattered by mental illness.

founding members of Aslan - bring their very special and intimate acoustic
show ‘Some Songs and Stories‘ to Draíocht for one special night. This show
features some new and many of Aslan’s best known songs plus some classic

From documentary maker Ken Wardrop (His & Hers, Mom & Me), comes
‘Making The Grade’, which invites us into the world of the piano lesson. This
endearing and uplifting documentary explores the bond between piano
teachers and their pupils as they struggle through their piano grades to
reach the pinnacle of Grade 8. This is a story of the transformative power
of music and the pride and happiness it provides both the students and
teachers. It may inspire us all to keep making the grade.

From Pawel Pawlikowski, the Director of Oscar nominated ‘Ida’ (2015),
comes Cold War, a passionate love story between two people of different
backgrounds and temperaments, who are fatally mismatched and yet
fatefully condemned to each other. Set against the backdrop of the Cold
War in the 1950s in Poland, Berlin, Yugoslavia and Paris, the film depicts an
impossible love story in impossible times.

Winner – Best Director, Cannes Film Festival 2018.

For years, Thomas Reid, a Co. Kildare farmer, has been locked in a gruelling
battle with his neighbour, U.S. microchip manufacturer, Intel, who want to
expand into Reid’s land. A lyrical and unconventional approach brings an
added layer of interest to this ‘David and Goliath’ tale of an eccentric Irish
farmer who takes on the might of an American computing corporation in a
battle through the courts. Feargal Ward’s handsome documentary explores
the clash between tradition and progress; between the rights of the individual
and the perceived good of society.
