What’s Coming This Season DRAÍOCHT – VISUAL ARTS & ARTIST RESIDENCIES Draíocht has two gallery spaces which are free to visit and open Monday to Saturday 10am-6pm. Exhibiting until mid-October is ‘HOME’ which consists of two complementary exhibitions: ‘More than Bricks and Mortar - Works from the IMMA Collection’, and ‘Carrier of Memories’ by Ella Bertilsson and Ulla Juske (pgs 50-51). Opening in November is ‘Mulhuddart Satellite’, an ASHLING SMITH ITB PAGE 49 exhibition by our Artist in Residence Michael McLoughlin, that explores place, belonging, friendships and the connections we have to the people around us (pgs 52-53). We are delighted to announce Ashling Smith as Draíocht’s Inaugural Creative Digital Media Graduate Award Winner (pg 49). A free screening of Marie Brett’s filmic artwork, Last Breath, a short film exploring the experience of death and dying, takes place on 18 Oct (pg 48). And we welcome Ceol Connected as Theatre Company in Residence for 2019 (pg 55). DRAÍOCHT – CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE EARLY YEARS MUSIC PAGE 38 Draíocht’s particular commitment to provide a range of opportunities for children and young people to engage in, is based on the belief that all of us, no matter how small, are entitled to access to arts and cultural experiences. This season we continue our Early Years Workshops for ages 2-4 years, where children can explore clay, shadow play and music (pg 38). We will partner with Dublin 15 Community Centres to bring three shows for babies out into the community, including ‘Little Tiny Xmas’, designed especially for children under 5 with complex needs (pg 39). The ever popular Christmas Workshops are back (pg 41) as well as our Free Family Days (pg 40). Draíocht’s Artist in Your Classroom Initiative continues for Primary Schools in D15 (pg 42) and we’ll collaborate once again with the Irish Film Institute by screening a foreign film HOW TO CATCH A STAR PAGE 25 for Senior Cycle Students (pg 44). We’ll recruit some new members for our D15 Youth Theatre with auditions taking place on 23 Sep (pg 45). Shows for young people include ‘Night Light’ (pg 13), ‘The Young King’ (pg 16), ‘Lords of Strut’ (pg 17) and ‘How to Catch a Star’ (pg 25). DRAÍOCHT - PERFORMANCE PROGRAMME Culture Night is back and to celebrate we’re screening three FREE films on our impressive 4K cinema equipment (pg 10) as well as screenings throughout the season of ‘Making the Grade’, ‘Cold War’, ‘Home Alone’ and ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ among others. Our major theatrical project, Home Theatre (Ireland), HOLY MARY PAGE 22 culminates in 90 performances in homes around D15 on the one night, 06 Oct (pg 36) and you can experience some of these plays as part of Dublin Theatre Festival from 10-13 Oct (pg 15). This Season, music fans can enjoy performances from Red Hurley, The 4 of Us, Christy Dignam, Declan O’Rourke and comedy audiences are in for a treat with The Nualas, Colin Murphy and Deirdre O’Kane. Ballet Ireland are back with The Nutcracker (pg 27) and Coolmine Musical Society bring us ‘Michael Collins – A Musical Drama’ (pg 23). This show features some new and many of Aslan’s best known songs plus some classic covers. Plays inspired by conversations with people who live in Dublin 15. Children, young people, adults, people new to Ireland, people who have always been here. People with stories. Join us for a night of freshly minted theatre pieces inspired by people just like you. Home Theatre (Ireland) pairs 30 Dublin 15 ‘hosts’, with 30 leading theatre makers. After spending time together, in the hosts’ homes, in their lives, each theatre maker writes a piece of theatre that will be performed in the host’s home. Home Theatre (Ireland) democratises the voices in Irish theatre. Home Theatre (Ireland) happens over two weeks and culminates on Saturday, October 6th, when 30 new plays will be performed 3 times in houses across Dublin 15. A selection of these plays are being presented in Draíocht as part of Dublin Theatre Festival. Each night a programme of 6 newly commissioned plays. Each night a different programme of work. Their show, which has been a huge success with theatre audiences all over Leinster for the past three years, takes you on a magical musical tour from the 40’s right up to date with numbers made famous by Count Basie, Frank Sinatra, Glen Miller, Tom Jones, Adele, Joe Dolan, Tina Turner, Van Morrison, Ella Fitzgerald and many more. Route 66 Big Band were formed in 1998 and over the years have played at weddings, festivals, charity fundraisers as well as at the Rose of Tralee Festival Ball in the Dome in Tralee. The achingly beautiful and tender language of Oscar Wilde joins the intimate and magical world of internationally acclaimed Adelaide theatre company, Slingsby.
