most trusted search engine, along with a short note indicating that it is to be borrowed or rented,
and from there the wheels hits the search engine highway. For the relevant companies, from Sixt
and Hertz to Avis or Starcar, this means that the top positions in search engine results are indis-
pensable for getting on the starting grid in the race to the user. Those who rank poorly on Google
do not come into the view of their target group, and from then on will only see the competition‘s
tail-lights. But car rental companies are not the only ones who need to prepare themselves well
through optimal search engine marketing; price comparison engines, travel providers, or even the
even national rail companies are all active competitors when it comes to getting the right car to the
right person.

and where they are placed in the social-media sphere. From these results, we have drawn
conclusions to help you optimize your own presence on Google and in the most important

Data basis: We have identified the most important keywords for each market, based on a de-
tailed industry analysis and on this basis we analyzed the performance of market participants
in terms of relevant KPIs. Because some providers, such as price comparison portals are placed
in several industries and perform very well in the market with sub-domains, they compete
with industry specific domains. This fact was taken into account and we included the respec-
tive subdomain in the comparison. However, the corresponding metrics were (for example
backlinks), always analyzed at the domain level. Of course other approaches would have been
possible, but, for consistency we chose this one and ask you to take this into account when
reading.

Which provider brings the most power to the street in Google’s organic search results? How do
comparison portals differentiate between car rental companies themselves and other all-rounders?
We’ll show who takes pole position in terms of search engine optimization and who‘s left in the pit
lane.
Our head start in the analysis of the SEO market situation is SEO project visibility, which shows how
frequently a site appears in organic search results. To determine this visibility, we search through
millions of keywords in the Google index. Then, the number of terms is viewed in relation to the
number of searches for the defined keywords, and the placement of each search term. The 360
most important keywords for the car industry were generated and analyzed.

The British Market: Going easy on SEO
Compared to the German market, the revelation that a good market position can be converted
through professional SEO measures has obviously not yet hit in the UK. After all, the project SEO
Visibility* of the highest ranked player in the UK market is still lower than that of the tenth-placed
one in Germany. There is still some tuning-up to be done in the UK market. At this low level, the
car rental company Enterprise.co.uk leads in the SEO field. Even so, with an index value of 157, their
visibility is still relatively low. Another noticeable point is that car rental companies such as Europcar
and Sixt, who have proven in other countries that they thoroughly appreciate the importance of
good SEO, are as good as invisible. Exactly why these companies have ended up neglecting the UK
market would be an interesting industry insight.

* The Project SEO Visibility shows the visibility of the project domain in organic search results. It uses a project’s
selected keywords to evaluate visibility. It is made up of ranking keywords’ search volumes and positions.
Within these figures, each position is ranked individually according to factors determined by Searchmetrics.

The German Market: A Two-Class Society shares the SEO-Market
The German SEO market is essentially a two-class society. The absolute top dog is Germany’s largest
rental car comparison portal, billiger-mietwagen.de, which has an outstanding project SEO Visibi-
lity of 2,125. As a purely online vendor, it has clearly recognized the SEO signs of the times and has
transferred this into top positions on Google. This sharp focus is thus an important strategic success
factor for the portal. Only Sixt.de can play in the same league, and that’s with a clear distance of
almost 800 points from the SEO pole position. Nevertheless, as one of the best-known car rental
companies, Sixt still secures strong Google rankings through effective search engine marketing.
After this first row, all other providers trail by a large margin, which is an indicator that there are still
significant reserves among car rental providers to invest in professional SEO strategies. Those who
first recognize this untapped potential can make a significant step forward. Even Hertz, which after
all is one of the world’s largest car rental companies, lies a distant 476 points behind the market’s
leading players.
Also of note is the relatively strong position of ADAC, which, as an automobile club, has converted
a significantly better position than the pure specialists, whose core focus should lie much more on
reaching the top ranking positions in the car rental area.

The American Market
The American SEO market in the car rental business is remarkably similar of its German counterpart,
with the Visibility Leader in the US being Enterprise. In their case, a project SEO Visibility of just 900
is enough to lead in the US market. Of particular note are certain company names that are slightly
odd in general market terms, but are actually unfavorable in terms of professional SEO strategy. As
a result, the car rental company Dollar comes in at third place, while the website Alamo.com lies in
position 9 with an index value of 242.

The French Market: International SEO Champion
Quite different from in the UK market, and also considerably better than the German, is the so-
lid visibility on Google of French car rental companies and the corresponding comparison por-
tals. With a huge project SEO Visibility value of 12,828, Europcar holds a clear lead in the list of
results at Google.fr. This highlights the importance of SEM in the French market and its hot-
ly contested nature as in other European markets, which in Germany would easily land it in the
top position. The top 3 is rounded off by the travel comparison portal Liligo.fr, also achieving a
project visibility value of 4,633; a strong performance by any market‘s standards. Overall, only
three classic price comparison portals placed on the list, namely Autoescape.fr, Locationsvoiture.
fr (the German branch of billiger-mietwagen.de), and the closely associated Locationsvoiture.net.

SEM — at the Search Engine Pump

While SEO is primarily about optimizing your own website, professional SEM is usually much more
focused. The companies that position themselves best are those that support their SEO-optimized
pages with consistent SEM budget allocation. A company that is well positioned here can quickly
pull ahead of its competitors and surge up to completely different top speeds on the visibility spee-
dometer.

                           To represent the different speeds of the individual car rental providers
                           as descriptively as possible, we calculate the so-called Project Paid Vi-
                           sibility value – the counterpart to project SEO visibility. This shows the
                           visibility of a web address entered into Google’s advertising field, and
                           this analysis is also based on the pre-defined set of 360 keywords dis-
                           cussed earlier. Search volume and ad positions are placed in relation to
                           each other and, based on their position, weighted according to similar
                           factors.

The British Market: Better positioned than in the SEO Field
The following chart applies with respect to SEM strategies. On the whole, providers here are on
average better positioned than their counterparts in the German market. In this environment, Ren-
talcars.com sets itself apart from all other providers. The rest are located relatively close to each
other, and in fact perform at a relatively high level.

The German market: Lack of support for SEO measures
The American market works a bit differently than the European market. What initially stands out
Similarly to the SEO field, billiger-mietwagen.de is also at the Google Adwords pole position. Ano-
ther price comparison portal, Check24.de, follows in second place. Interestingly, providers like Avis
or Enterprise balance out their relatively weak position in the SEO field by setting aside evidently
large budgets to use in Google Adwords, while major suppliers such as Hertz or Sixt take the exact
opposite approach. In these cases, low SEM investment means that strong SEO positions are not
consolidated – a missed opportunity for companies that obviously still have room for improvement
in this regard.

The American Market: A highly contested and mature market
The United States is the site of a very competitive market for the best SEM placements. The top two
are Kayak.com and Enterprise.com, both with similar index values of more than 5,000. Both car ren-
tal companies like Hertz or Avis as well as price comparison portals are in the remaining places, and
are noticeably investing in Google Adwords. The US market seems to be more mature than others,
and making it a trendsetter for European markets in this respect.

The French Market: No support for SEO measures
In terms of SEM rankings, the French market is quite comparable to the German one. Nevertheless,
the clear top dog is actually a car rental provider, Europecar.fr, and this result already emerged in
the organic search. Even so, and much like the German market, this is an exception rather than the
rule. This trend shows that companies with a low-visibility SEO invest more in Google Adwords;
conversely, companies that have strongly SEO-optimized pages tend to be less offensive in the SEM
field.

Which keywords deliver more power?

We know that search engine marketing is not just a question of budget. It depends much more
on assigning the right keywords and always being on the scene when the defined target group is
looking for the right car for their trip. We wanted to find out exactly who is best represented, and
where, and thus defined and sifted through a large pool of search terms (360 keywords) for the
four main markets: Germany, Britain, France, and the United States.
The focal point is the top 10 places in Google‘s rankings, for which
we have inserted a percentage related to the respective position. We
have also looked at who is placed on which result page, since it is
clear that visibility on the first page is much more valuable than on
page 3 or 4.

The UK Market: familiar providers take the top positions
Compared to the German or, in the following section, French markets, British pages only succeed
in placing a relatively small number of keywords in visible rankings on Google.co.uk. The leader of
the pack here is Avis, with 70% and a total of 252 keywords covered. What is striking is that the top
three positions are filled by car rental providers. TripAdvisor – a comparison portal that we already
know very well from our analysis of the air travel sector – only comes in at fourth place.

The German Market: Billiger-mietwagen.de and Sixt lead the pack
It is interesting to see that in the keyword rankings, the distribution within our top 10 at times varies
considerably. The clear leader in terms of assigned keywords is Sixt, which, by assigning 324 of the
360 selected search terms, has 90 percent of the important search terms covered – an extremely
high percentage, even by international standards. Nevertheless, a total of 298 of these keywords
are set aside on the first page of the search results. The SEO market leader billiger-mietwagen.de is
thus slightly better placed on this first page, since they managed to place 299 out of 320 assigned
search terms among the top positions on Google, which itself is a clear sign of where the success of
the comparison portals actually lies.

Overall, we can say that the top five have carried out some very good work on their keywords. This
includes the ADAC, who in doing so establishes itself as a serious player in the business of online
car rentals. Rather poorly placed are ab-in-den-urlaub.de, which as a travel portal is also an impor-
tant starting point for vacationers who want to rent a car for their holiday, and Starcar. With just 63
ranking keywords, the company is simply not on the radar of people who use Google to search for
a rental car.

The American Market: Expedia owns the first page
Dominating the American market – as is the case in Britain – are the car rental providers. There are
seven of them in the top 10, and they are thus in tough competition with one another for the most
important search terms. However, it is actually a comparison portal that leads our ranking for the
US. Expedia.com manages to be found through almost 90 percent of the studied keywords, with
over 276 search terms landing on the first results page alone. This is especially remarkable because
almost all the other providers, while also ranking well with many keywords, have major difficulties
landing on the first results page. This makes Expedia.com the clear market leader, since it is clear
that users’ search behavior is focused on this first page.

The French Market: Extremely high keyword density
When it comes to getting a rental car to the right person, French websites rank highest in terms of
keywords. In our ranking, the comparison portal Autoeurope.fr only takes tenth position despite a
very respectable 262 keywords. Ranked first is Hertz with a total of 302 keywords, while every pro-
vider within the top five scores over 80 percent. The ratio of car rental companies to comparison
portals remains balanced.

A look at the speedometer of successful link-building

An essential aspect of implementing successful SEO is a professional linking strategy. Only pages
recommended by other pages that are thematically relevant can provide Google with solid proof
that they provide real value for the user. As a result, your page can be rewarded with higher ran-
kings. We have looked at which car rental companies or comparison portals are well positioned to
implement new recommendation when it comes to their linking strategy.

British Market: Solid UK specialists
Unlike in Germany, the UK‘s specialist providers are very well placed within the link building top 10.
Topping the table is Carrentals.co.uk with more than half a million links placed, followed in second
place by Scotland.com, which admittedly is a tourism portal. Hertz only comes in at third place,
but again demonstrates the ability of a car rental provider, with roots in the offline business, to
enter into the top rankings. Interestingly, and in stark contrast to Germany, Erento.net only places
seventh, and with 178,000 links only reaches a fraction of its number of links in the German market.

The German Market: Specialists versus all-rounders
If you look at the link distribution in the German market, the first thing that will invariably catch
your eye is the huge number of backlinks reached by Erento.com. With nearly 11 million links, the
portal is far ahead of any other provider. But, to qualify this, it should be noted that Erento is not
just a pure car rental portal. Rather, this area is only a single category among many on the website,
and numerous other rental categories ensure that such a huge number is possible. Similarly, it is
also important to appreciate the high number of backlinks achieved by the Deutsche Bahn. As we
all know, renting cars is not one of the core businesses of rail companies, yet the number of links
placed is enormous.
When looking at the pure providers within the target sector, notice that billiger-mietwagen.de
clearly builds its strong SEO position on the foundation of a very high number of links. Mietwagen-
check.de also does very well in this regard, with nearly 125,000 links.

The American Market: Expedia.com remains unbeatable
The outright link frontrunner in the United States is the travel portal Expedia.com; more than 1.5
million backlinks puts this in fairly clear terms. Cheapoair.com follows closely behind however, also
demonstrating a significant presence on the Internet with a total of 1.2 million links. A large gap
then opens up between second place and Priceline.com, which follows in third. Generally, the Ame-
rican market displays a tendency for travel portals to be the ones usually setting the most links – the
huge variety of topics that these portals deal with seems to be a simply unbeatable trump card.
As far as car rental providers go, only Sixt and Hertz succeed in breaking into the top ten, but the
distance between them and the top rankings is enormous. In an internal competition between the
specialist providers, Hertz remains well ahead of Sixt.

The French Market: Travel and comparison portals dominate
At the top of the pile in France are travel and comparison portals, which tend to be very active
in terms of link building, but for whom car rentals are not a core business. This is again reflected
in our hit list, with the travel and price comparison site Kelko.fr leading the pack with 2.7 million
set backlinks. The next two places are held by Expedia.fr, a travel portal, and Voyages-scnf.com,
the country’s national railway company, with both using their thematic proximity to the car rental
industry to position themselves using a high number of links. However, the distance in this case
between second and third positions is quite large, as Expedia, with a million links, has twice as many
links as Voyages-sncf.fr.

Rent Cars, Share Cars

We’ve already known for some time now that social networks are important platforms on which
services and products are shared, commented on and liked. Referral marketing is becoming an in-
creasingly important issue for online portals, regardless of the services they provide. We have thus
taken a closer look to determine how well the domains of providers in the car rental industry per-
form in this respect. We determine the value of a website’s social visibility by considering reviews
as well as the sharing of a specific URL. Searchmetrics then weighted the links according to their
individual influence on a site’s Google visibility. In the end, the higher the calculated index value,
the greater the popularity of a page and, thus, the higher their reach. The relevant networks for our
study are Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn.

                                                    The advantage of our analysis is obvious.
                                                    Far too often, sites on social networks are
                                                    judged purely based on their number of
                                                    follower or fans. But the key aspect of soci-
                                                    al media is the interaction that takes place
                                                    mostly among the users themselves. Social
                                                    visibility takes into account all mentions of
                                                    the company, regardless of whether the re-
                                                    commending user now follows each of the
company’s pages or not. While having many fans or followers can improve social visibility, it is not
the only evaluation parameter.

The British Market: At over 40 million, the highest international index value

The British provider kayak.com achieves the best international value in terms of social visibility. Its
value of over 40 million is completely unrivalled and is an indication of the site’s consistent social
media positioning. The next placed competitors are well behind, despite the fact that those ranking
in second, third, and fourth place still reach an index value of over a million. Britain also demons-
trates the trend that the car rental providers are struggling to keep up with the big comparison
portals. Sixt lags behind to seventh place, followed closely by Hertz, which reaches a social visibility
value of just over 155,000. Overall, it seems that there is clear optimization potential among all of
the providers below fourth place.

The German Market: All-rounders dominate
Although Sixt is known for its creative social marketing ideas, the social media sphere is once again
dominated by the travel comparison portals, which also provide the car rental services. At the top
and at a considerable distance from all other providers is Opodo.de, and with a social visibility value
of well over 2.6 million, it provides a clear sign that the site’s interactivity in social networks is very
high. The runners-up are Expedia.de and ab-in-den-urlaub.de, two other „all-rounders“. Surprisin-
gly, fourth place is taken by the Deutsche Bahn, which is quite obviously perceived as a comprehen-
sive service provider and also does remarkably well in the car rental segment. Only in fifth place do
we finally see the first specialist provider, billiger-mietwagen.de, which with a value of more than
820,000, finds itself on the upper part of the table. Starting in sixth place, a second group begins to
break off from the higher ranks, with a considerable distance from the top 5. Coming in at position
nine, Sixt is the only car rental provider with a strong presence in social networks.

The American Market: A ranking list without specialists
What has already been implied in the other international markets continues on the American side.
In the top 10 list of social visibility, there are no car specialists and not a single car rental comparison
site. Instead, the ranking is dominated by travel portals, and is again led by a wide margin by Kayak.
com. Another interesting development is that Zipcar.com, a car-sharing service provider, places
ahead of any car rental specialists.

The French Market: The train takes first place
The national railway company in France seems to be quite keen and astute when it comes to social
networks. With a very wide margin from its competitors and an index value of more than 3.2 milli-
on, voyages-scnf.com presents itself as a comprehensive service provider. Following the national
railway company in the top group are primarily travel portals. As the only car rental comparison site,
locationdevoiture.fr enters the top 10 in ninth place. Other major car rental providers such as Avis
or Sixt are nowhere to be found.
