President’s Message Warmest greetings to all members, Dato Dr. Kuldip Singh Sohan How time flies as we move into the second quarter of 2018. President This year is a little different than the past years. 2018 is the sesquicentennial anniversary for our beloved club and will be an interesting year for our Club. I see this year as one of commemorating our heritage, club rebuilding, and having some fun. Penang Club has a long and event-filled history. We will be taking this as part of the sesquicentennial year of celebration with a grand bash on 30 August 2018 plus other fun-filled activities, as well as launching our own limited edition Penang Club 150 years anniversary single malt whisky. Just to highlight, advertisements for prequalification of contractors for the Club refurbishment has been placed in Kwong Wah Yit Poh on Monday, 19 March 2018 and The Star Publication on Tuesday, 20 March 2018 respectively. I would also like to express my heartfelt thanks to my fellow members who generously hosted the Chap Goh Meh Dinner & Dance which received a tremendous turnout and commendable feedback on both the food and service. In appreciation of the hard work of our staff, my fellow Committee Members and I have approved their request for a 3 day 2 night trip to Phuket. Unlike the previous year’s trip to Medan where the Club was closed for 3 days, for this year’s trip the staff will be divided into 2 batches, with the first group leaving on 30 July 2018 and returning on 1 August 2018, and the second group leaving on 31 July 2018 and returning on 2 August 2018. With this arrangement, the Club will be closed for only 2 days with adequate staff to serve. Happy Vaisakhi to all our Sikh Members and to all our Muslim members, Selamat Hari Raya, Maaf Zahir dan Batin. Cheers and happy clubbing! Best regards Dato’ Dr Kuldip Singh
General Manager’s Message Dear Members, Mr. Shekhar Nair The first two months of 2018 started off on a favourable note General Manager/Secretary with an increased number of Members patronising the Club. We also had a fantastic turnout during the Chap Goh Meh Dinner and Dance and exemplary feedback. I would like to express my immense gratitude for the support and hope to see your continued patronage. Food has always been a crucial subject of discussion at the Club. The F&B Convenor and the Management are working closely with the caterer addressing the Members’ feedback and needs. Overall, the comments on food quality and presentation have been notable and we hope Members will continue to give their support to the caterer and the Club. Nonetheless, we do acknowledge that there is always room for improvement and rest assured we are not resting on our laurels as it is our highest priority to provide our guests with exceptional dining experience. We will be changing the menu by adding some new dishes and taking out slow-moving items. Please feel free to write your comments and suggestions in the Members’ Suggestion book at the Front Office. We seek your kind cooperation to ensure the Club’s Rules in general are observed by Members and their Guests, with strict adherence to the dress codes applicable in different areas/outlets of the Club. There have been many instances where Members’ guests were not appropriately attired and had to be asked to dine at the Patio. For further information on the Club events, please refer to the newsletter, website and Club noticeboards. Last but not least, here’s wishing all caring and loving mummies Happy Mother’s Day and not forgetting all daddies Happy Father’s Day. Take care and see you at the Club. Cheers Yours Truly Shekhar Nair P5

Library AuctionNews List NEW BOOKS East Indies by Ian Burnett The 200 year struggle between the Portuguese Crown, the Dutch East India Company and the English East India Company for supremacy in the Eastern Seas. In 1497, Vasco da Gama rounded the Cape of Good Hope, his small Portuguese fleet reached India and became the first Europeans to sail the Eastern Seas. Over the next 100 years the Portuguese spread their trading network in search of spices, sandalwood, silks, gold, silver, porcelains and other oriental goods. This trading network extended from Goa in India as far east as the Moluccas and Timor in Indonesia, and as far north as China and Japan. In 1595 and 1601 respectively, the first Dutch and English trading expeditions rounded the Cape of Good Hope and the trading monopoly of the Portuguese Crown was being challenged by the Dutch East India Company and then the English East India Company, the world’s first joint stock and multi-national trading companies. For the next 200 years, the struggle for trade supremacy between the Portuguese, the Dutch, and the English ranged across the Eastern Seas and in the settlements of Goa, Malacca, Ambon, Macao, Canton, Nagasaki, Batavia, Macassar, Johor and Singapore. Until by the end of 19th century the Portuguese had almost vanished from the Eastern Seas, and the Dutch and the English East Indies Companies had been transformed from trading companies into colonial powers ruling vast territories in Indonesia, India and Malaya.
