Youth Progression LET’S PLAY! Activities available for the youth player as he/she progresses. Welcome to the Southern California Tennis Association, we are excited that you have picked tennis as your game of choice. This packet will explain and help guide you through the junior process here in Southern California from age 6-18. At 6 years of age you are able to play in Play Days and Junior Team Tennis. Play days are designed to be local entry level competition in a shortened, timed format. Usually lasting 2-4 hours. Please visit www.youthtennis.com to find play days near you or ask your local tennis provider. Secondly, you are able to participate in our Junior Team Tennis (JTT). JTT is explained later in the packet; there are teams formed throughout Southern California. Please contact the Area League Coordinator and they can help you find a JTT Team. At age 7-10 you will be participating in Youth Progression and Junior Team Tennis. This is a system that monitors and awards your players progress as they navigate Orange Level 1 and Green Level 1 before moving on to our tournament structure. The players will earn digital stars and trophies as they play and win tournaments. Each players progress is tract on a webpage that you will receive when you sign up for a USTA account. Each player from Age 7-10 will need to earn 20 starts and/or trophies to advance to the next level. Remember “Advancement is not prohibited, Progression is required.” In Youth Progression you are able to play down one level once you have advanced past the level if you are having difficulty. Once you have progressed through the program you are able to play yellow ball tournaments in the Southern California Section. There is no reason to be in a hurry; junior tennis is meant to be a marathon, not a sprint. A good rule of thumb is in competition you should be winning about 50-60 percent of the time before advancing to the next level of tournaments. Kids 10 and under receive a free membership. Once you have reached the month of your 11th Birthday or have advanced through Youth Progression by fulfilling your stars and/or trophies you will advance into our tournament structure. Our tourna- ments are structured from Level 7 (beginning) to Level 1 (Advanced). The Junior Tennis department would suggest that you don’t attempt to move up to fast and keep in mind the 50-60% rule in order to realize you can try the next level. Starting locally, near home is suggested and then start venturing out, once you have some success with local tournaments at your level. Competition Training Centers are located throughout Southern California and offer a team training and competition atmosphere locally for our players. This brings in a different element that allows the players to be on a team while training and competing. Each team is picked by rankings and proximity. This is for ages 10-14. High School tennis is a great team sport that you will play once you have reached high school age. Most schools in our section have a team that both the girls and boys can play on. This is a great experi- ence for you children and a way to make new friends and compete on a team. This takes you through a brief journey of what we offer in regards to Junior Tennis. Please talk to your local providers, tennis clubs, parks and recs, or don’t hesitate to call any of our TEAM here in the South- ern California Tennis Office. We are here to help you easily navigate through the system. Thanks, Junior Tennis Department-Southern California Tennis Association

Play Days Play Days are designed for kids—from those just learning to compete to those who are already in competition—to play in a fun, non-threatening yet competitive setting. Plays Days are informal events—typically 2-3 hours—and allow kids to play multiple matches with and against a variety of players. These events give kids opportunities to play—whether they are getting ready for the next step of playing in sanctioned tournaments and Jr. Team Tennis, or if they already are competing and are looking for additional play time. Depending on the level of the player, a Play Day allows kids to play in an informal yet competitive setting without the threat of elimination. Kids are given the chance to develop and enhance their skills in a fun atmosphere and thereby grow their love of the game. Youth Progression (10 & Under Players) The USTA and its Sections have created a “Youth Progression Pathway” that serves as a guide for coaches, parents and players to help ensure that kids 10 and under participate in events using the appropriate ball and court for their skill level. Players will compete at appropriate levels of play as they progress through stages based on age, participation and achievement. By providing a pathway, young players will have the opportunity to experience suitable levels of competition as well as develop their games tactically and technically. The progression tracking system rewards players for competing and inspires them to play more often. It’s not just about winning and losing – it’s about having fun, engaging young children and helping them fall in love with tennis. How it Works For children ages 7-10 years old, a best-in-class system has been developed to track the progress of junior players from the orange level to the green level to the yellow level of competition. A child can advance a level by earning the required amount of participation stars and trophies. A player’s mission is to clear each level by collecting a combination of 20 stars and/or trophies to advance. The more they play, and the more they improve their skills, the more stars and trophies they accumulate, enabling them to advance to the next level. Players can track their progress on Tennis Link’s “My Player” page. There, players can see how many more virtual stars and trophies they need to acquire to reach the next level. Each player’s page will track their progress and accumulation of stars and trophies as opposed to ranking points. To clear each level, players will have to collect a combination of 20 stars and/or trophies. Players collect stars for: tournament participation, Junior Team Tennis participation and Early Development Camp participation. Players collect trophies for: winning a tournament or reaching the final of a tournament.
Players will accumulate Stars and/or Trophies by participating in Tournaments, Junior Team Tennis, Early Development Camps, Winning Tournaments or being Tournament Finalist. Players must earn 20 Stars or Trophies or a combination of both in order to clear the level and move to Green Ball play. It’s not about the individual, but about kids getting together to play singles, doubles and mixed doubles against other teams. JTT promotes values you would expect from any other sport by fostering a spirit of cooperation, unity and self-growth. Also, it’s a fun environment for kids where they learn that succeeding is really more about how you play the game – win or lose. Junior Team Tennis is designed for kids between the ages of 6 – 18 at any level of play: Entry Level, Intermediate and Advanced levels Spring season (February – June) Fall season (September – January National Championship Summer season (June – August) For information on a local area program, please contact: Los Angeles/South Bay/Long Beach San Fernando & Santa Clarita Valleys Bakersfield/Kern County Montez Noa at and West Los Angeles Chris Campoy at milomontez@gmail.com Nancy Abrams at sctajtt@gmail.com ccampoy@icloud.com Pasadena/San Gabriel Valley Orange County Riverside & San Bernardino Pierre Mareschal at Heidi Stryker at Tony Chatfield at pmareschal@valleyhuntclub.com heidi.stryker3@gmail.com chatfa01@hotmail.com Ventura County San Diego Santa Barbara Emily Wagner at Conan Lorenzo at CathyAnn Simon at ewagner.vcjtt@yahoo.com clorenzo@ljbtc.com cas@iae.com or please contact Ken Grassel at the SCTA offices at grassel@scta.usta.com (310) 208-3838 ext. 233

What level tournament should I play??
Junior Rankings https://tennislink.usta.com/tournaments/Rankings/RankingHome.aspx Southern California players who have won at least one match in their age division will show up on the weekly standings list. Level 7 tournaments do not count for ranking. Players earn points for the round they reach as long as they have won at least one match in that tournament. Byes do not count as wins but defaults/withdrawals/walkovers count. Points are based on the level of tournament. Level 1s earn the most points, all the way down to Level 6s. Please visit http://www.socaljuniortennis.com/stats.html for our ranking tables. The standings list is generally updated every Wednesday afternoon. Only a player’s BEST 8 results are counted towards their ranking. For example, if a player earned 100 points in 8 different tournaments and 90 points in their 9th tournament, the 90 point tournament will not count towards their overall point total. We are on a 52 week rolling system, so any tournament from 53 weeks ago and beyond will “drop off” a player’s record. Any questions, please contact Barbara Estes: BarbaraE@scta.usta.com.
