Happy Retirement Ill. Lee Bradley, 33o! After twenty plus years of service to the Valley of Chicago Ill. Lee Bradley, 33° is retiring. He is a valuable team member and will be missed. Nearly everyone reading this article has called the Valley of Chicago Office and asked Lee a question or received assistance from him. He was exceptional at member relations and making members feel welcome and appreciated with his sense of humor and charm. Lee Bradley's career at the Scottish Rite began back at the old headquarters in downtown Chicago and he stuck with the VOC as it moved to temporary office space in Schaumburg and finally to our new home in Bloomingdale. All along the way, Lee made sure that the members were informed and cared for. His passion for Freemasonry extends far beyond the Valley of Chicago. Lee is a consummate volunteer for Illinois DeMolay, Illinois Grand Lodge, and the York Rite Bodies. He is the definition of reliable, available, trustworthy, and generous. You can always find Lee setting up before an event, manning the door during the event, and cleaning up after it is over. For most of us, once the event is over it's time to relax and have an afterglow. That is when Lee can be found putting things away and preparing for the next one. He is extremely generous with his time and is one of the unseen forces in Freemasonry. I look forward to seeing Lee at future Masonic events across the State and know that whenever he is around, things are under control. It was an honor and privilege to work with him and learn from him. I know I speak for the entire membership of the Valley of Chicago when I say, "Thank You, Lee Bradley, we could not have done it without you. Cheers to a very happy retirement." Fraternally, David R. Are Secret Masonic Handshakes In Post Pandemic Peril!!! What Do We Do If We Can’t Shake Hands? By Bull Garrington I come from a large southern family. When I walk into my family’s place in Alabama, there can anywhere from fifteen to fifty cousins, second cousins, first cousins once removed, fifth cousins thrice removed, and my nieces and nephews and their kids, all of whom want to say hello with a great big hug. It can take me half an hour just to get from the front door to the kitchen. Freemasonry is no different. Walking into a lodge means a solid twenty minutes of shaking hands. Or it used to. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that we can’t touch each other anymore. Each of us is a mobile ecosystem riddled with septic terror bugs, rabid microfauna, and armies of Jurassic viruses recently released from their ancient frozen tombs by the ravages of climate change. Going forward, we have to treat each other like we’re about to explode, wear masks, stand a coffin’s length away from each other, and never ever shake hands again ever. Which could be an issue. Handshakes are kind of our thing. As a native Alabamian, I am used to the sad imprecations levied upon me by everyone I meet north of the Mason-Dixon line. Every time it’s “did you marry your sister?” (I did not— she turned me down.) As a Freemason, I endure the same kind of knee-jerk dad-joke boorishness when people notice my ring and ask me to teach them our secret handshake. (Pro-tip, always agree, then make up an outlandish, frenetic spasm of a handshake, then look them square in the eye and whisper don’t tell anybody). After secretly ruling the world, designing the dollar bill, and inventing Nicholas Cage, our secret handshake is our signature meme. And now we have to give it up. This really puts the kibosh on the whole mouth-to-ear knee- to-knee exercise we’re all familiar with. How are we going Unless we can find another way to greet each other, I assume to execute that ritual now? On the Square Tobacco By Ymelda Rivera Laxton, Assistant Curator Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library Chewing tobacco—also known as plug tobacco or “chaw”— was the most common way to consume the tobacco plant in the mid-to-late 1800s. During this time American tobacco companies produced a variety of products related to chewing tobacco, including pouches, pipes, and spittoons. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, a number of these items used Masonic imagery on their products or as part of a brand name. A few years ago the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library was given a tobacco pouch that advertises “on the Square” plug tobacco. The name fits within a square and compasses printed on the pouch. In 2020 another benefactor donated a tin tobacco container to the museum that appears to have been made for this same tobacco manufacturer. Viewed together, these two objects and shed some light on a tobacco product made with a Masonic audience in mind. The recently donated tin is marked with the names of two tobacco manufacturers, the Strater Brothers Tobacco Company and the Burly Tobacco Company, both located in Kentucky. The Strater Brothers of Louisville produced made several popular brands of chewing and smoking tobacco in the late 1800s. The Burley Tobacco Company initially formed under the auspices of an agricultural cooperative, the American Society of Equity was also called the Burley Tobacco Society. The Burley Company purchased Strater Brothers in 1912 and the combined companies remained active into the 1920s. The Burley Company, as part of an agricultural cooperative, helped to set a minimum price for pooled tobacco. To attract buyers who identified as with unions and cooperatives, the Burley Tobacco Company featured imagery and mottos that echoed those used by fraternal groups and labor unions of the time, as well as Masonic symbols. “Brotherhood,” “Union Leader,” and “the tie that binds” were words and phrases that the Burley Company used on its packaging. In addition to the brand name, “On the Square,” the tin pictured here had the statement “…Independent Factory Union Made” printed on the back of the tin, showing how the Burley Company sought to IMAGE CREDITS: attract Masons and union supporters as customers.
