THIRD QUARTER MODULE NO. 1: LIVING THINGS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENT Lesson 1: Animal and Plant Adaptations At the end of this module, you should be able to learn different body parts and structures of animals and plants and how they use these in order for them to survive and live in their habitat for you to realize that helping conserve their habitat helps these organisms adapt more and live longer. Specifically, you are expected to: 1. identify the body structures of the animals for adaptation; 2. infer that the body structures of the animals help them to adapt and survive in their particular habitat; 3. identify the specialized structures of terrestrial and aquatic plants; 4. compare the stages in the life cycle of organisms; and 5. create a Habitat Conservation Plan showing/explaining the effects of environmental destruction to the habitat of the animals and plants. The competencies above will help you become a young environmentalist concerned of preserving and saving the natural habitat of animals and plants. ROLE OF PARENTS Monitor the students in checking the E-desk posts for important announcements and after- class activities to be done. Guide the students to fully understand the lessons. Supervise the students in performing/accomplishing the given written activities and outputs. Hello, Grade Four! It’s me, Agham! I hope that you have learned a lot from the previous lessons that you took with your teacher. As you can see, I brought few of my friends with me today. Your teacher and I will introduce you to two Kingdoms of Life – to the world of animals and plants. Are you as excited as I am to learn more about these two kingdoms? Come one, let’s get started! Discovering the World of Science 4 |Third Quarter| Module 1 | Page 2
I know that many of you are into animals and plants. Let us know what you know about them. Try answering these questions. Good luck, Grade Four! NOTE: Since printing of the module is NOT required, answer the activities in your interactive notebook. Checking is during the F2F class. Write TRUE or FALSE. _______1. Mimicry is a way of how some animals adjust to their environment by copying the colors and/or shapes of other organism. _______2. Different animals live in different places. _______3. Habitat is a place where a certain organism lives. _______4. Organisms like animals have to satisfy their needs such as food, water, shelter, air and space so that they can survive well. _______5. Adaptation is how organisms adjust to their environment so that they can survive. _______6. Terrestrial plants live on land. _______7. All plants need sunlight, water, air, and suitable environment to grow. _______8. Aquatic plants survive in water. Discovering the World of Science 4 |Third Quarter| Module 1 | Page 3
_______9. Plants need sunlight, carbon dioxide and water to make their own food through photosynthesis. _______10. All plants have structures that help them adapt to their particular environment. Now, let us learn some more things about animals and plants. Study the concept maps and diagram below that summarize what is in stored for you in this module. And also, make sure to take note and remember everything that you will learn from your teacher during your synchronous classes. Happy learning, Grade Four! TAKE NOTE: terrestrial animals – animals that live on land (desert, grassland, forest, polar areas) aquatic animals – animals that live in water (freshwater like river or lake, saltwater like sea or ocean) REMEMBER THE FOLLOWING: Both terrestrial and aquatic animals have structures (body parts) that help them adapt to their environment. Their structures vary depending on the conditions of the place in which they live in. Some of the structures include the teeth, beak, body covering, legs, odor or substance released. These help them for protecting themselves, for hunting their food and for better movement. Discovering the World of Science 4 |Third Quarter| Module 1 | Page 4
Some animals undergo metamorphosis. This is a process in which animals change as they undergo different stages of growth. The illustration below shows two kinds of metamorphosis: complete and incomplete. Discovering the World of Science 4 |Third Quarter| Module 1 | Page 5
Like animals, plants have structures that help them adapt and survive in their environment. Both terrestrial and aquatic plants have structures that help them get their basic needs (sunlight, water, carbon dioxide and nutrients). Examples of Body Structures of Plants: A. For Protection thorns, spines, prickles on the leaves or stems toxins in the leaves, stems, or roots B. For Reproduction colorful petals of flowers stigma and stamen of flowers seeds of fruits C. For Getting Their Basic Needs to get sunlight – leaves, roots for attaching themselves on branches, tall stems or woody vines to get water – root system Special Structures of Plants: A. Root Systems – Most plants have deep root systems. Some plants have shallow root systems. Few plants, called epiphytes, have specialized roots to get nutrients from the air. B. Specialized Leaves – Some plants have dry, waxlike leaves. Others have drip tips. Most plants have smooth, shiny leaves. Few plants have leaves that trap and digest insects. C. Modified Stems – Some plants have modified stems called runner, rhizome, tuber, bulb and sucker. Discovering the World of Science 4 |Third Quarter| Module 1 | Page 6
