World Water Day WORLD WATER DAY 2020 WORLD WATER DAY IS AN ANNUAL UN OBSERVANCE DAY THAT HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPORTANCE OF FRESHWATER. Held on Sunday the 22nd of March, the theme for 2020 is water and climate change - and how the two are inextricably linked. As the global population grows, so does the demand for water, which depletes natural resources and damages the environment in many places. This year’s campaign aims to show how the correct use of water will help reduce floods, droughts, scarcity and pollution, and will help fight climate change itself. By adapting to the water effects of climate change, health will be protected and lives will be saved. And, by using water more efficiently, greenhouse gases will be reduced. The key messages for the day, outlined by the UN, are: we cannot afford to wait. Climate policymakers must put water at the heart of action plans. Water can help fight climate change. There are sustainable, affordable and scalable water and sanitation solutions. Everyone has a role to play. In our daily lives, there are surprisingly easy steps we can all take to address climate change. Choose one thing today: • Take a five minute shower. • Choose a plant-based meal. • Turn off sleeping tech. • Don’t throw away edible food. • Shop sustainably.

10 YEAR OLD LOCAL donating hair to those without LILLY-ROSE KAINE OF CALLIOPE IS HOPING THE COMMUNITY AND LOCAL BUSINESSES WILL GET BEHIND HER EFFORT TO RAISE FUNDS FOR VARIETY – THE CHILDREN’S CHARITY WHO GIVE AUSSIE KIDS A FAIR GO. On 18th April 2020 at Alive Pharmacy in Calliope, Lilly- rose is chopping off her long locks and donating them to Variety. The donated hair will be sent to specialised wig makers, who make wigs for those who have lost their hair due to medical conditions; such as alopecia. The wigs give those in need more confidence and better self- esteem so they can feel like themselves again. All funds raised will be donated to Variety which will go directly back into their programs, so Lilly-rose’s hair will assist Variety in helping Aussie kids by providing practical equipment, programs and experiences to help overcome obstacles they face. Erin, 13, was diagnosed with alopecia and within six months she was completely bald. Erin was granted a wig from Variety and reclaimed her confidence and self-esteem. “She just wanted to feel ‘normal’ again and the wig from Variety certainly made all the difference. Her confidence sky-rocketed,” Erin’s Mum, Maria, said. Lilly-rose has been growing her hair for almost 2 years and will be donating 35cm to Variety. When asked why she wanted to donate her hair she said “I know what it's like to feel different to other kids & I want to help someone who doesn’t have any hair feel beautiful.” She explained that she loves her long hair (which is almost down to her tailbone) but believes someone needs it more than her.
