Tunnel Tour Lamp-up and experience a snapshot of what it was like to get to and from a shift at the Atlas #3 Coal Mine. The tunnel tour en- gages students in an adventure that highlights the stories of the men and animals who’s identity re- volved around digging coal in the Drumheller Valley. The tour entails getting geared-up in the washhouse, walking up an inclined slope into the 210 ft. long underground conveyor tun- nel, and eventually emerging near the top of the hill by the blacksmiths shop. A visit will be made to the #3 mine entrance before embarking down the miners staircase to end the shift. Tipple Tour Explore the hiring process, investigate authentic pay cheques, and discuss the role of men and women in the space of the mine office before heading into Canada's last wooden tipple. Be- ing the first place of em- ployment for most boys, and often being re- garded as the worst place to work at the mine, the tipple offers unique insight into working conditions in the Drumheller Valley coal mines. Train Tour Bump along in the original coal cars of Linda, our 90+ year old electric mine locomotive. Let the stories of pit ponies, trains and childhood drive the journey. Linda carries stu- dents on a kilometre of track around the surface of our site, making stops along the way to take on roles such as trappers and pony driver. The Drumheller Valley was once a hotbed for un- ion activity, a place of strikes, rough streets, and dangerous tunnels. This story based tour focuses on the strategic role Drumheller coal miners played in the Canadian Labour Movement.
