Your future is now ... and includes an HSC! Trainee or Apprentice? School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBAT) provide students with a valuable head start to a nationally recognised qualification that includes hands on skills and industry experience along with a Higher School Certificate. School Based Apprentice and Trainee (SBAT) benefits: ✔ Remain at school with friends and be able to officially graduate ✔ Start earning money ✔ Nationally recognised training ✔ Gain employability skills A Traineeship at school involves an agreement between the trainee and employer for the duration of Years 11 and 12 while also studying for the HSC. Traineeships also cover industries that may not require a trade certificate. An Apprenticeship commenced at school extends this agreement beyond Year 12 with the employer and a suitable training organisation agreeable to all parties. Complete trade qualifications may then be achieved within five years of commencement. School based Apprentices and Trainees study endorsed vocational framework courses. At Hunter Christian School the SBAT courses delivered on site include Construction (Pathways), Metal and Engineering, Retail , Electro Technologies (Career Start) and Sport and Recreation. “Students work TWO days with their employer to complete their work days.” School Based Apprentices and trainees (SBATs) are typically required to complete a minimum of 144 days (depending on the framework) of paid employment during Years 11 and 12. Students currently work up to TWO days with their employer and are at school for the balance of the week. Their agreement may include working over holiday breaks Hu n t e r C h ri s ti a n S c h ool 2 0 2 0 – V 2 . 1
The Employers' Advantage Opportunities exist for an employer to invest in young people by giving them a start in a vocation or trade while ensuring that their organisation is resourced with trained and qualified people. Invest and Grow with a School Based Apprentice or Trainee (SBAT) ✔ Your workforce, your way ✔ Financial incentives ✔ Ongoing support ✔ Contemporary training Invest and Grow The employment of an SBAT student can be the beginning of a rewarding relationship for both parties. The decision of whether to commence the arrangement as a Trainee or Apprentice is an individual one that is negotiated at the outset. Typically at the completion of the students’ Preliminary and Higher School Certificate Course, a traineeship will be complete or can be converted to an apprenticeship if desired, depending upon the particular vocational pathway. As a mentor the business will play a key role in investing in young people and the community. In turn they are supported by the school and its SBAT liaison as well as the Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC). Some employers may wish to become a host employer and engage a Group Training Organisation (GTO) that is then responsible for wages, payroll tax and workers compensation. Multiple financial incentives for employers of School Based Apprentices and Trainees are available depending upon the specific scenario and will be conferred upon by the Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC), these incentives commonly amount to thousands of dollars. Employers may indirectly benefit from a student also studies for a higher level of education. Before signing an agreement of commencement, employers are paired with potential students for either informal work experience or a Work Trial. This opportunity provides for the best possible matching and has proved successful for previous SBAT arrangements. Hu n t e r C h ri s ti a n S c h ool 2 0 2 0 – V 2 . 1

Who is who and why EMPLOYER The employer is the hirer that is responsible for providing supervision, support and on the job training for the SBAT to gain the requisite skills and experiences they will need to be successful in their trade or vocation. WORKPLACE SUPERVISOR The employer will assign a workplace supervisor to the SBAT in line with their organisational structure. They will become a key person in terms of training, mentoring and liasing with the RTO in regard to the student’s progress. REGISTERED TRAINING ORGANISATION (RTO) The RTO delivers training to the trainee or apprentice that leads to a nationally accredited qualification. The RTO is pivotal in developing The Training Plan in consultation with the employer, student and parents. In most cases at HunterChristianSchool, the School acts for and on behalf of the RTO, creating a training plan, training program, assessment and maintenance of student records. NATIONAL TRAINING CONTRACT Both the SBAT and Employer sign a legally binding agreement called a National Training Contract. This agreement remains in place until the specified terms of training are completed in regard to dates, days worked and completion of training as agreed. AUSTRALIAN APPRENTICESHIP CENTRES (AAC) The AACs are contracted by the Australian Government to assist in identifying appropriate training opportunities and establishing Training Contracts between the student and the employer. GROUP TRAINING ORGANISATION (GTO) Occasionally employers wish to become a Host Employer in as much as they are not the legal employer. In this arrangement the employer engages the services of a GTO who then is responsible for wages, payroll tax and workers compensation. They can provide peace of mind for the host employer. TRAINING PLAN The Training Plan that is negotiated by the employer, the SBAT and the RTO is the foundational guide to the what, where and when of training and assessment. This document is also verified and signed by State Training Services and the schools' peak body, The Association of Independent Schools. TRAINING SERVICES NSW In NSW our State Training Authority is State Training Services. They are the government body responsible for approving, registering and administering Training Contracts. They also provide advice and support to all parties throughout the Australian Apprenticeship process. Hu n t e r C h ri s ti a n S c h ool 2 0 2 0 – V 2 . 1
