A message from the Shangri La Gardens Education Team
Fellow educators,

We are excited to welcome students and teachers back to Shangri La Gardens and Nature Center for onsite
curriculum-based field trips! While the COVID-19 pandemic has improved, there are lingering effects that
must still be considered to maintain the health and safety of our school community and address the needs of
our students and teachers. Accordingly, Shangri La Gardens will operate onsite curriculum-based programs,
curriculum-based outreach programs, and virtual programs. All three of these different programming options
are available during the 2021-2022 school year.

       Onsite Curriculum-based Programs:

Shangri La Gardens’ onsite educational programs are curriculum-based and fully aligned to the
science objectives for the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. Each program includes hands-on
activities, investigations, or experiments, frequently with kinesthetic games. Total immersion is our
goal. As we aim to connect students to nature and to empower them to make a difference, each
program includes elements of natural history, ecology, and sustainability.

       Curriculum-based Outreach Programs:

Shangri La Gardens’ curriculum-based outreach Programs cover a variety of topics and are designed to
take advantage of the natural resources and key features of each school’s green spaces. All Outreach
Programs are designed to supplement the curriculum of teachers and students in a manner that allows
flexible scheduling and no off-campus travel. When the classroom cannot come to Shangri La Gardens,
we bring Shangri La Gardens to your classroom.

       Virtual Programs (Virtual Adventures!):
Shangri La Gardens’ virtual curriculum-based programs offer grade-appropriate, science-based
activities that students can complete in the classroom or at home. Shangri La Educators will provide
virtual guidance and explanation of a science-based topic; while post video, the teacher will have the
opportunity to facilitate the grade-level appropriate, hands-on science-based activity through use of a
classroom kit. Classroom kits contain all materials necessary to effectively and efficiently facilitate the
post-video lesson, as well as questions designed to spark higher-level, critical-thinking skills.

We know there are many uncertainties and challenges with every new school year. We will continue do our
best to provide you with educational programs that can be the best tool to enrich your curriculum.

We look forward to continuing to be a part of your classroom!

Sincerely,
The Shangri La Gardens Education Team

Statement of Education Goals and Philosophy
Shangri La Gardens offers a safe environment where students can connect with
and develop a relationship with nature.

Curriculum-based programs are designed using the Texas Essentials
Knowledge and Skills Standards, The Texas Natural Resource/Environmental
Literacy Plan, and the North American Association for Environmental Educa-
tion’s Guidelines for Excellence.

Whether we are teaching school children, families, or adults,
we aim to incorporate the following pedagogical principles
into our programs:

 Hands-on
 Experiential
 Total immersion
 Small group experiences
 If you aren’t doing, you aren’t learning
 Teacher as guide and facilitator, not as lecturer
 Structured and safe environment to explore the outdoors
 Encourage students to think for themselves

We try to do what classroom teachers cannot easily do…
  take students into the swamp, forest, meadow or bayou;
and provide activities that incorporate kinesthetic and fine motor skills.

In an effort to create a well-rounded program, we use a three-tiered approach when
we design our lessons. In each lesson, we aspire to integrate the following
concepts:
 Natural History: name the local flora and fauna and
                             provide “fun facts” for each
 Ecology: show relationships between flora and fauna,
between abiotic and biotic factors, and how humans fit
                             into the ecosystem
 Sustainability: consider changes that we can make in
                             our behavior so that our
                             actions have a positive
                             impact on ecosystems
                             instead of a negative
                             impact

Schedule of Classes 2021-2022 - Shangri La Botanical Gardens ...
While You’re at Shangri La Gardens….
 Students with bee allergies must carry their epi-pen with them at all times.
Our garden programs are marked with a caution sign because we have a
working beehive in our Children’s Garden. However, stinging insects
(including bees, wasps, hornets, and ants) are everywhere at Shangri La
     Gardens.
 Students, teachers, and parent chaperones must wear closed-toed shoes
and shoes with a closed heel (no sandals, flip flops, etc.).
    Most of our programs have a rainy-day/indoor alternate lesson plan;
therefore, most programs will be conducted, rain or shine. The indoor version
requires students to walk from building to building. Please make sure
     students dress appropriately.
 Please provide name tags for your students.
 We recommend that all students carry a water bottle with them during
the day. If your students are eating onsite before or after their program, make
sure students bring a sack lunch. (No soda, sugar drinks, or gum.)
 If more than one class is coming from your school, be sure to separate the
lunches by class. Classes usually eat lunch separately.
 If the program does not include a lunch break, your students may stay
after or arrive early to enjoy a sack lunch in our student picnic area. If you
choose to do this, make sure your students bring a sack lunch. Please let us
know in advance so we can reserve our picnic area for you.

Parent Chaperones
 For safety reasons, Shangri La Gardens requires 1 adult for every 10
students, plus one extra. For example, if you have 20 students in your
class, you should bring 3 adults, including teachers and parents. Exception:
     one-on-one aides.
 Please make sure parent chaperones do not bring younger siblings/children
     or strollers.
 Ensure parent chaperones arrive with the students. Parent chaperones must
stay with the class at all times.
 Shangri La Gardens is open to the public. It is our policy that parents
who are not school-sanctioned chaperones are not allowed to interact
with their child, or any other children participating in the school
program. This is for the safety of your students.

Bus Arrangements
 Teachers must make all bus arrangements.

 A new standardized Bus Transportation Reimbursement Form is provided to
each school district during the registration process at each of the Stark Cultural
Venues. This Reimbursement Form is to be submitted at the end of each semes-
ter for reimbursement as detailed below.

 The Fall semester is defined as August–December, and the Reimbursement Form
for that semester is to be submitted no later than January 30. The Spring se-
mester is defined as January-June, and the Reimbursement Form for that se-
mester is to be submitted no later than June 30.

 Invoices shall be paid by the Stark Foundation no later than February for the
previous Fall semester, and July for the previous Spring semester.

 The Vendor Information Form provided during registration will need to be sub-
mitted with the January invoice to ensure Stark Foundation has the most cur-
rent contact information and remit-to address for all outgoing checks.

 All completed forms are to be submitted in a timely manner via e-mail to:
       ACCOUNTSPAYABLE@STARKFOUNDATION.ORG

 Buses will pick up and drop off students inside the main entrance/parking
area at Shangri La Gardens, under the porte-cochere. A Shangri La Gardens
educator will be there to greet you.

 Please have the bus drop you off at Shangri La Gardens at the scheduled start
time for the program. The bus should return to Shangri La Gardens to pick up
the students at the scheduled end time for the program, unless…

 ...you would like to stay late or arrive early to enjoy our picnic area. Please ar-
range for the bus to pick you up approximately 1/2 hour after the scheduled end
time, or drop you off approximately 1/2 hour earlier than the scheduled start
    time.

 Free bus parking is available in our parking lot across the street from the main
    entrance.

Program Cancellation Policy
 All programs are designed with an alternate rainy-day/indoor version. Shan-
gri La Gardens generally does not cancel programs due to weather.
 We strongly discourage teachers from cancelling their program. Many class-
rooms are turned down every year because our programs fill up. When teach-
ers cancel at the last minute, we cannot fill the slot.
 We understand that unexpected situations arise. If you need to cancel, please
let us know as soon as possible.

COVID-19 Best Practices
Shangri La Gardens, as well as the Stark Foundation continue to monitor the Coro-
navirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic and safety guidelines from local, state, and
federal government. As the situation evolves, we may update our safety measures
and guidelines. Teachers will be notified of any changes in advance of their on-
site field trip.

To help make your visit as safe as possible, Shangri Gardens has committed to the
following safety measures:

  • Scheduled programs are limited to one (1) school campus at a time
  • All students, teachers, and chaperones will be asked to apply hand sanitizer
upon entry in the gardens and when necessary transitioning between
      activities
  • Implementation of social distancing when possible
  • Increased cleaning schedule of educational materials and supplies
  • Increased cleaning schedule in public areas

Shangri La Gardens’ staff are required to wear face coverings, self-screen for
COVID-19 symptoms, and participate in a daily temperature check.

COVID-19 safety is a community commitment. We ask that all schools follow the
guidelines below for their onsite field trip:

  • Screen all students, teachers, and chaperones for COVID-19 symptoms prior
      to arriving at the gardens
  • Encourage schools to follow the latest CDC guidelines regarding COVID-19
      safety
  • Encourage, but do not require the use of face coverings for students,
       teachers, and chaperones

Report any instance of a student, teacher, or chaperone attending the gardens
while positive for COVID-19 to Katie Krantz, Director of Education and
Volunteer Programs at kkrantz@shangrilagardens.org

Onsite Curriculum-based Programs

Would you like to get your students out of the
                classroom and into nature?
Conducted by Shangri La Gardens’ staff, Onsite Curriculum-based Programs are the corner-
stone of Shangri La Gardens Educational Programming. The curriculum, designed by Shangri
La Gardens Nature Education staff, consists of lessons aligned with the state science bench-
marks, The Texas Natural Resource/Environmental Literacy Plan, and the North American As-
sociation for Environmental Education’s Guidelines for Excellence. Our goal is to create an
immersive, highly engaging, and inspirational learning opportunity for children to augment the
classroom experiences they receive. All of Shangri La Gardens Educational Programming
support and supplement a STEM-based (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics)
                                         curriculum.

Each program includes hands-on activities, investigations, or experiments, frequently with
kinesthetic games. Total immersion is our goal. If the program is about trees, students will be
in the forest. If the program includes a water theme, students might get a little wet as they
study our swamp, bayou, or our man-made lake. As we aim to connect students to nature and
to empower them to make a difference, each program includes elements of natural history,
                                   ecology, and sustainability.

Our education staff is comprised of 10 dedicated and fully qualified educators.
Most of our educators possess a Master’s Degree in Education or are certified teachers who
have retired after serving many years in the classroom.

Thank you to International Paper for their support of our
Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd Grade onsite programming.

Greenie Beanie Babies (All Seasons)
Grade Levels: All Special Education Grades

During this 1-hour lesson, we will engage the
student’s five senses as they explore the parts of
green bean plants. They will identify basic plant
structures, what plants need to grow, uses of
plants, and why they are important. Using simple
scientific tools like hand lenses, students will
investigate these plants up-close. Each student will
plant their own seed to study growth in the
classroom or even take home.

Curriculum-based Outreach Programs

Can’t bring your students to Shangri La Gardens?
We will bring Shangri La Gardens to your students!

This year we are offering eight unique curriculum-based outreach lessons. Each lesson is
45 minutes in length. These lessons are designed to be functional both inside and outside of
the classroom. We prefer utilizing available greenspace on your campus whenever possible.
We can turn even the smallest outside area into a mini Shangri La Gardens!

We have dates available starting in the Spring semester. You pick the date, the time, and the
lesson specific for your grade level. We would like to facilitate three sessions when we come
to your campus. These can be back to back groups of your students OR you can pair up with
another teacher who is interested in the same lesson. We will be as flexible as possible!

Currently, outreach programming is limited to Orange County.

Please contact Jamie Massa at (409) 670-0803 or jmassa@shangrilagardens.org
                                to schedule your classes.

Thank you to INVISTA Orange for their support of this program series!

Explorer Tours (Self-Guided Tours)

Explorer Tours offer a little more flexibility for local teachers. You, the classroom teacher,
will lead your students on an educational excursion through our gardens and Nature Discovery
Center. You can teach your students about science, art, history, and more!

Shangri La Gardens offers workshops to introduce you to the gardens so you will be
comfortable leading your own tour. Learn to identify some of our plants, discover fun facts
about them, and learn tips to engage students in the gardens. There is a pathway marked by
numbered signs that can be used with our guidebook. After the workshop, you are certified to
register your class for an Explorer Tour. Attend only once and you are “certified” for life.

FREE Explorer Tours

The Explorer Tour is a self-guided tour of Shangri La Gardens. We can
accommodate up to 50 students. We require a student to adult ratio of
10:1, and all teachers must attend an Explorer Tour Teacher Workshop
(see information above). We do not have lunch facilities for Explorer
Tours. Shangri La Gardens does not pay for busing for these visits.
