SAP Innovation Awards 2018 Entry Pitch Deck Realizing an Enriched Era of 5G via 18TB SAP HANA Real-Time Data Management Platform (NTT DOCOMO’s “Declaration beyond” 2020 Initiatives) NTT DOCOMO, Inc.
Realizing an Enriched Era of 5G via 18TB SAP HANA Real-Time Data Management Platform NTT DOCOMO, Inc. Japan Telecommunications NTT DOCOMO developed a Real-Time Data Management Platform with SAP HANA, which We partitioned huge amount of data into small pieces to allocate equally incorporates 18TB of memory, the world’s largest class, among nodes and enabled multiple-reads in each node. In addition, we and a scale-out model of 10 servers. It realizes the designed tables and SQL in consideration of partition keys which search results within 2 seconds from 63TB of SAP HANA- minimize “inter-node data transfer”. For rapid visualization, we designed optimized data source and the real-time visualization of SQL to reduce result size as much as possible. As a result of these the huge amount of customer data, contract data, and innovations, we realized the search results within 2 seconds from 63TB billing data. Solution Overview NTT DOCOMO aims for true data-driven management to achieve “Declaration beyond” as its Medium-Term Strategy 2020. NTT DATA and NTT DATA Global Solutions developed a Real-time Data Management Platform with SAP HANA for NTT DOCOMO. The system realized the real-time visualization of the huge amount of customer data, contract data, and billing data and helped about 2,400 docomo Shops (sales and support shop) nation-wide to utilize such big data for improving customers’ experience and business analysis. The Platform incorporates 18TB of memory, the world’s largest class in SAP HANA, and a scale-out model of 10 servers. It realizes search results within 2 seconds from 63TB of data source, and a data upload of 1.5TB within 2 hours which is generated per day at peak period. Previously it took 1-2 weeks to obtain analysis reports from the technical department and 2-3 months to create a data-mart with the former system. There are two purposes for the true data-driven management. One is to improve the business processes and the other is to create and evolve services by deeply understanding customers. Both are being met with the Platform. The adoption of AI and Machine Learning will become the next stage as part of Declaration beyond initiatives. 4
Solution Details The performance requirements were extraordinary high, as “the search results within 2 seconds from 63TB of data source” and “the data upload of 1.5TB within 2 hours which is generated per day at peak period”. A scale-out model was adopted in consideration of extensibility. There are 3 key points that affect SAP HANA’s performance. 1) “data read” by memory scanning. 2) “inter-node data transfer” to consolidate intermediate results from all nodes. 3) “result generation” to users. It was required to finish all these steps within 2 seconds. Firstly, we partitioned huge data into small pieces to allocate equally among nodes and enable multiple-reads in each node. In addition, we designed tables and SQL in consideration of partition keys which minimize “inter-node data transfer”. For rapid visualization, we designed SQL to reduce result size as much as possible. As a result of these innovations, we realized the former performance requirement. The latter performance requirement was not so difficult as the former, but we needed to convert ROW-type data to COLUMN-type one. After investigating a number of methods in respect of the ease of development and operation, we chose to partition CSV file by size and load data multiply to SAP HANA without specifying node. We realized 300MB of data load per second. 5
Benefits Business value: Increase revenue by self-business analysis and rapid PDCA (plan, do, check, analysis) cycle. Improve store operations, uncover best practices and apply insights and lessons from other stores. Analyze the result of marketing campaign efficiently and visualize various leading indicators. Reduce operational cost by dramatic improvement in report generation speed. Maximize the existing asset of data analysis (systems, know-how, people, partners) and enhance analytical business processes in general. Contribute to the true data-driven management objective. Social value: Achieve faster and more hospitable customer support than ever before. By linking every customer touchpoint, including docomo Shops, smartphones, self-service terminals and call centers, and understanding each customer better, NTT DOCOMO can reduce customer wait times and always provide the optimal solution anytime, anywhere. Resolve regional disparities in respect of accessing NTT DOCOMO’s big data asset. Regional vitalization is an issue of Japan. Some rural areas have problems like an aging society with fewer children. NTT DOCOMO is obliged to provide universal ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) services all over Japan and about 2,400 docomo Shops are spread nation-wide. Human empowerment: Collect the data from people and share it among them. As much as 18TB of data from various customer touchpoints, including some 2,400 docomo shops run by almost 37,000 employees, as well as call centers with more than 10,000 operators, will be collected, analyzed and processed. Enable users to pull out the latest data whenever they need to and grasp the situation from various viewpoints. Before SAP HANA adoption, it took at least a week or two for the back-end office to generate and deliver non-regular information to front-office sales. 6

SAP HANA is adopted by more than 10,000 companies worldwide. NTT DOCOMO has developed the world's largest class system with 18TB SAP HANA. SAP Japan will continue to provide beneficial services to our customers and partners.” [5] - Masatoshi Suzuki, Vice President, Head of Platform Solution Group, SAP Japan “SAP HANA possesses overwhelming performance and meets Japan quality. It was a best choice for NTT DOCOMO. However, it was needed to understand an architecture of SAP HANA and customer's requirements to maximize the effectiveness. We, NTT DATA, will contribute to realization of customers' competitiveness and work transformation by utilizing this experience and know-how.” [5] - Masafumi Noda, Sr. Database Specialist, NTT DATA 9
Deployment details Big Data It consists of the “operation data” that is stored by about 2,400 docomo Shops nation-wide and call centers with over 10,000 operators: The number of new contracts, model changes, cancellations, transfers from competitors, subscribers of peripheral services (such as video and music), etc. Word-of-mouth data of SNS will become the next target. Data size is 63TB: maximum 19 billion tables, over 1,000 columns in each table. Various Users Main users are about 1,000 employees of Agency Sales Department who grasp operating results, identify issues, and find best practices in terms of when, which staff sold what to which customer at domomo Shops (agencies), as NTT DOCOMO’s customer touch-points. Enterprise Sales, Marketing, Service, Executives are also using the Platform. It counts about 70,000 registered users, 3,000 active users, and maximum 200 concurrent users at present. 2016 2017 Aug.-Sep. Oct. Nov. Dec. Jan. Feb. Mar.
