Dame Sarah Connolly and Benjamin are our Artists in Focus for 2022/2023 – two incredible musicians who feature throughout our season Dame Sarah Connolly Benjamin Grosvenor Born in County Durham, Sarah Connolly British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor is studied piano and singing at the Royal internationally recognized for his sonorous College of Music, of which she is now a lyricism and understated brilliance at the Fellow. She was made a DBE in the 2017 keyboard. His virtuosic interpretations are Birthday Honours, having previously been underpinned by a unique balance of technical made a CBE in the 2010 New Year’s Honours. mastery and intense musicality. There are some new faces in the orchestra – we’ve recently appointed seven new musicians – and we’re showcasing the talents of our new Section Leader Flute, Charlotte Ashton, and Section Leader Clarinet, Cristina Mateo with concerto performances in the autumn. I know from experience you’ll give them a very warm welcome. 36 Thank you for your support This is our first full season since the pandemic. We’d like to thank you, our audience, for supporting us through two incredibly difficult years. Your donations meant we overcame huge financial challenges. These donations didn’t only get us through, they made extraordinary things happen. We moved our Young Musicians Programme online in weeks. We streamed RNS performances for the first time. We appointed brilliant new musicians. This happened because you gave us your support. In 22/23 we’re still experiencing big challenges but are holding fast to big ambitions. This is an ambitious season. It needs to be – we must share the joy and wonder of live orchestral music with people across the North East.
