OUR HISTORY The organization was founded by Luke Barnett and Dena Koehn. Luke is a professional chairmaker, who has won many awards and exhibited his work in galleries all over the world. Barnett won “Top craftsman in North America” from the Directory of Traditional American Crafts and Early American Life Magazine in 2015, 2016, and 2017. He won “Best Project” in the seating category through Popular Woodworking Magazine in 2016 and 2017. Barnett also had one of his handmade Birdcage Rocking Chairs selected to be a part of a traveling Smithsonian Exhibit in 2016. Mr. Barnett is a member of the Adrian Noon Rotary Club and was awarded “Rotarian of the Year 2020” and “Outstanding Honors 2018-2019” for his devotion to the Woodworking for Warriors Program. He was also selected to be a guest speaker at the International Woodworking Fair in 2018 and 2020. Barnett is also an Accredited Skills Evaluator (ASE) through the Woodworking Career Alliance of North America. Currently, Barnett is a Finalist for “Top Young Woodworking Professional in the World” through The Woodworking Network for 2021. Koehn is a graduate of Adrian College with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Studio Art as well as a Bachelor’s of Art in English with a focus on writing. Barnett started teaching around the country in 2014 and locally with the Adrian Center for the Arts in 2015. The classes gained popularity and in 2015 the City of Adrian approached the duo with an opportunity to take over an old power plant that had been vacant. That is where the Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute found its start. In early 2017 they formed the organization, “the Sam Beauford Woodshop” now called the “Sam Beauford Woodwoodworking Institute” where they donated all the equipment and tools that they had accumulated and formed a board of 3 people. SBWI has grown at a very fast pace. We now have a board of eleven members and three staff members on the payroll. We also have over twelve different contract instructors that teach different classes throughout the year as well as around the world. Mr. Barnett is now a full-time employee of the school and works with other artists from all over Michigan with an overall goal of teaching the craft of woodworking to as many people as possible. Fun Fact: Sam Beauford is the name of the beloved dog (pictured here) owned by Luke from the very beginning of his career as a Chairmaker! Longlivewood.org 5

VENEER & MARQUETRY In this class, the students will learn to work with veneer and use it to create artful panels. After an introductory day learning veneering fundamentals, there will be two days learning geometric marquetry. This involves using templates and a knife to make crisp patterns, similar to those in stained glass or quilting. We will use those techniques to make a marquetry lid for a solid wood box where the other box parts will be provided. There will also be two days learning the Boulle technique, where packets of veneer are cut using a scroll saw, then flowing organic pictures created from the pieces cut. All of the steps required to complete the projects will be covered - selecting veneers, making templates, creating the art, preparing substrates, assembling the pictures, gluing them up, preparing them for finish, and then finishing them. The focus will be on technique but there will be a discussion of the artistic aspects of the craft. Assessment of Learning: At the end of the class, the students will have prepared a book-matched framed panel, suitable for use in a carcass, a wooden box with a complex marquetry lid, and 6-8 floral marquetry pictures suitable for box lids or as wall art. They will also know how to address the major issues associated with veneering for use in furniture. A custom-written course book will also be provided that summarizes the material covered, to remind students later of what they learned. 890.00 5 days 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Monday - Friday November 1st - 5th, 2021 Longlivewood.org 34

STEREOTOMY 5 Days: Monday - Friday May 10th - 14th, 2021 Double Curved Stereotomy: 5 Days: February 21st - 25th, 2022 8 AM- 5 PM Instructor: Patrick Moore 900.00 Stereotomy This course employs working drawings to design and construct structures both simple and complex. It is an empirically-based method that has been used for millennia in the design and construction of European cathedrals, fortresses, castles, including historically classified UNESCO world heritage monuments such as the Chartres Cathedral. Students of practical stereotomy become knowledgeable through hands-on experience of a process that makes the most complex designs very manageable. In truth, the experience of this approach not only provides students with new skills and enhances those they already possess, but transforms them profoundly. They begin not only to do things differently and think differently but also to see differently. Double Curved Stereotomy In this course, students will build a complex, yet manageable, awning design for over a doorway or window. The design consists of three-dimensionally curved pieces, known in carpentry as double-curvature work. The student will create brackets with curved braces to support the awning. Figuring how to cut real lengths, angles, and curves of each piece will involve the process of drawing. Students will learn to use the visuospatial part of their brain, the group of cognitive functions that analyzes and understands space to solve these complexities. Students will use mental imagery and navigation to process and rotate 2D and 3D objects in their minds. The visuospatial construction process enables craftsmen to reproduce drawings or use components to construct objects and shapes. Visuospatial functions represent the brain's highest level of visual processing. The use of stereotomy transforms the work as well as the worker. With support and supervision from our expert Instructor Patrick Moore, students will think, reflect, and learn to envision differently. Longlivewood.org 37

SBWI RULES & POLICIES Enrollment & Attendance Our enrollment process is a simple registration form, to reserve a student's place in a course located on our website. However, payment is required prior to the class and must be fulfilled in order to keep a student's reservation. For more on tuition and fees see "Tuition, Supplies & Fees" below. Enrollment in the Diploma Program is the result of acceptance after an application has been received and an interview with the Executive Administration has been conducted. Payment is required prior to the beginning of the school year unless a student has requested and been approved to be on a payment plan. Non Discrimination Policy The SBWI admits students without regard for religion, sex, sexual orientation, sexual preference, gender identity and expression, age, race, color, disability, national and ethnic origin, military or veteran status, or any other characteristic protected under applicable federal, state, or local law, and all students enjoy the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available at the school. Refund Policy If the student terminates their enrollment in a course at least 7 days before the first day of class, all funds are completely refunded to the student. After you are within 7 days of the course the SBWI cannot refund students due to materials already having been purchased, seat reservation in class, and paying instructor wages. Payment is mandatory before students can attend any classes or long-term courses at the SBWI. If for any reason necessary the SBWI cancels a course students will have the option for a full refund or the option to apply the tuition fee towards a future class. Assessment of Learning, Standards & Progress The SBWI does not assign letter grades to our coursework. Students' learning is assessed by instructors at the end of the course by reviewing their final products. Classes are paced to complete projects and students will be granted extra assistance if necessary. Our staff is here to help students learn new skills and develop these over time. The Diploma Program grading scale is conducted on a 4.0 system where students are graded on each project completed throughout each semester and they will receive a final GPA at the end of each semester. Failure is based on attendance to class times, completion of projects, and the minimum number of studio hours being met. If a student misses over three days of class time and does not complete the studio hours they are subject to failing the course. Grades will be conducted by the instructor and emailed to each student upon completion of each semester. Behavior Policy & Conditions for Dismissal Students are expected to behave in a mature, courteous, and considerate fashion at all times. Safety is the principal concern of everyone in the school community. If a student fails to meet safety requirements or behaves inappropriately, suspension of activities for this student for an amount of time determined by the Board of Directors will commence or termination of the student's access to the facilities may result. 42
SBWI RULES & POLICIES Tuition, Supplies & Fees Tuition must be paid in full before the date/time of the course. Failure to do so will result in the student being denied access to the facilities to participate and asked to reschedule to another course date later on. Tuition covers all supplies necessary for courses but students are allowed to bring their own tools if they wish. Financial assistance is offered for Youth Programming and is determined by the Board of Directors through communications with families based on the financial need and determination of funds for the course. There are no extra fees associated with the use of the SBWI facilities or equipment. All costs are covered in student tuition that is assigned to each course. Facilities & Equipment We are located on the 55-acre wooded PlaneWave campus that serves as an entrance to the City of Adrian. Our facilities include workshops and classrooms that provide the bench space, equipment, and machinery necessary for the highest quality instruction in each program. Our on-site administrative office is open Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. Previous Experience & Credit Policy At the SBWI we rely on a more natural lecture and hands-on learning experience instead of on individual credit classes, so a transfer of prior credit is usually not applicable. Prior experience is welcomed, as are all levels of experience. No prior experience is required as we offer beginner courses to teach the basics and prepare students for more intensive courses, later on, should they so choose to take them. 43
