Reflection Page 3 Believe...Practice…Teach My Dear Friends, Bishop Rojas has accepted 9 men to be ordained to the Order of the Diaconate on August 28, at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, Yucaipa. These men will thus become the newest class of permanent deacons in the Diocese of San Bernardino. This will mark not only the first time that Bishop Rojas, as the Diocesan Bishop, will ordain new permanent deacons, but these men will also be deacons ordained in the year we celebrate both St. Joseph and marriage and family. This is significant because the ministry of the permanent diaconate, most often, involves men whose vocation has arisen within the sacrament of matrimony and at the same time matches the self-giving life of St. Joseph, These men, and their wives, have spent years of discernment to identify within themselves the vocational call of service. Beginning with the Parish Ministry Formation Program (PMFP), the basic formation program for all Diocesan ministries, they nurtured an internal call to enter a deeper service of love for the people of God. This led to their entering a deeper formation in the Continuing Ministry Formation Program (CMFP), enriching their faith, developing their ministerial leadership, and allowing them the opportunity for deeper discernment of the vocational call to ordained service. This discernment ultimately called them into the formation program for the permanent diaconate. These nine men have been called out of the Sacrament of Matrimony to place themselves not only at the service of family in the Domestic Church but to service of the people of God. Like St. Joseph they have heard a call to a life of sacrificial service, devoting their lives to not only their families but to the people of God, as Joseph became a beloved father to the Messiah. They have prepared themselves to teach and to feed the people of God; they will proclaim the Gospel and at times preach, they will work with catechetical and canonical ministries, they will baptize and witness to marriages, among other ministries as tender and loving fathers. They will pledge obedience to the Gospel and to the Bishop and practice that obedience in a respectful and sensitive Christian life. In all of this they will work at true interior healing, accepting their own personal history, even those things they did not choose, and not give up but somehow engage with the world and live out the Gospel in a creatively courageous way. Most importantly they will complete their diaconal services without compensation but as an outward example of participating in the work of salvation while also working to support his own family economically, socially, culturally, and spiritually. Their work will also be in the shadows, choosing to empower others as a self-gift, patiently and silently assisting others to grow into all that they can be. They will do all of this while still working within the domestic church of matrimony, loving their family, and caring for them. In Ordination there is an outpouring of the Holy Spirit which will configure these men to Christ’s mission as a sacred minister (Directory of Ministry, Permanent Deacons (DMLDP no.1,41) and, although not sacramentally recognized, by the unity of the Sacrament of Matrimony will also impact their wives. This outpouring of the Spirit will transform them and together they will work at transforming the people of God. Once ordained they will proclaim the Gospel in liturgy, preach, witness to marriage, baptize infants, work with individuals to try to reconcile marriage issues, bring the Church’s blessing to people and things, become the icon of Christ the servant. These men, with the support of their wives and families, will enter one of the oldest, and yet newest, ministries of the Church, a ministry which includes the first recorded martyr (Acts 6), and today stands as a bridge between the laity and the clergy. Pray for these men and their wives, pray for those men in our parish who are now in formation for the Diaconate, pray for all deacons and their wives. But also discern your own call to ministry, not everyone is called to the same ministry, everyone, however, is called to ministry. May you have the opportunity this week to pray for those who have discerned their vocation and to be able to enter continued discernment of your own call. May you have a good week of prayer and discernment, Blessings, Dcn. Ed

My name is Gina Guting and I’ve just recently became the new Youth and Young Adult Minister at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rancho Cucamonga. My home parish is St. Christopher’s in Moreno Valley and I’ve had a history of volunteering my time in serving in various areas since I was 8 years old until now, most especially in Youth Ministry. Some fun facts about myself, I’ve just recently became a dog owner. His name is Reggie, Reginald if you want to be fancy. I sing and play various musical instruments such as guitar, piano, and drums and enjoy hiking as well as visiting nice scenic views. Some important things to know about me is that during my High School years and even a couple years after that, I discerned upon becoming a religious sister and spent time with a religious congregation out in Dover, Delaware for about 5 months to find out that God had other plans for me. Before entering this position, I was working as Site Coordinator for an After-school Program called Think Together for about 8 years with elementary school kids. Working with youth and becoming a Youth and Young Adult Minister has been a huge passion of mine for a very long time and I’m very excited to see what great things God has in store for us at Sacred Heart. If you like to get more information about me or any youth and young adult meetings and events, please feel to contact me at (909) 899-1049 ext. 121. I’m here to live, love, learn, serve, grow, and journey with you all and I look forward to meeting you all very soon. Know you are all in my thoughts and prayers. Take care and God bless
