LATIN ORATION 2021 Students, parents, teachers, and family members watching the livestream from home; we have finally made it to graduation. Together, we have overcome challenges like no other class has. Our class encountered unprecedented setbacks, welcomed new opportunities, and adapted to a very unusual year. We transitioned to online learning, led clubs and teams through uncertain times, and endured the most challenging and competitive college admissions process in history. Now that we have made it to graduation, we must remember that we only made it here with the support of our teachers, families, and most importantly, each other. Life is a journey, not a destination. As we stand here at our graduation, we can’t help but think about our journey here— one filled with triumphs and struggles, friendships, and achievements. Whether we remember Osborn, Midland, or Milton; other old schools; Rye Youth teams; or something completely random, one set of memories each of us will always have in common is our senior year. When considering our senior year, we remember how we and our teachers struggled to transition to online learning; Or how we, together, endured the pain of losing several senior traditions; How our club and sports schedules were devastated; And how we witnessed the most hectic and memorable presidential election; How we had a dozen unsuccessful (virtual) skip days; Or how fun it can be to travel from the Turf to Playland and back to the Turf; And how easily an administrator can end a senior prank if they really want to; All of these and more are memories we will always share, good and bad. All of these and more are things we will reminisce about as we sporadically run into each other throughout our lives. All of these and more are experiences that will shape us and our futures. As we move on from Rye High School, we will remember each other, we will remember our teachers, and we will remember our journey.

WITH APPRECIATION AND GRATITUDE You Graduated! Congratulations on reaching this milestone in your academic journey. There is no escaping the fact that Covid-19 challenged our lives in recent months, but we endured, adapted, and may have even thrived on occasion. It sometimes felt unfair, a curse from the fates, a “Why me?” However, inevitably, all storms pass. The French have an old saying that there is “No beauty without some suffering”. As you gain distance from this year, you may find that you change perspective. You may see how adversity can bring strength, fear and opportunity to find courage, or the disappointment countered by fresh optimism. I trust you will go on to happy and exciting lives, and I have faith that despite the year you endured you are stronger. Onward! I could create a very lengthy list of heartfelt thanks, and more than the Rye High School community will ever know. I do want to thank your Assistant Principals, Ms. Short and Dr. Zegarelli, your amazing teachers, and the committed support staff. My special thanks to Mrs. Hanley and Mrs. May in the main office who went above and beyond in supporting my entry to Rye High School and to Mr. Morganti who generously shared his wisdom and experience. I also want to thank and acknowledge Rye City School District Superintendent, Dr Byrne and his team in Central Administration for their wonderful support in making the 2021 Senior Activities a reality and a success. There are many others who have dedicated themselves to making Graduation 2021 an unforgettable event. I also wish to acknowledge the hard work and hours of preparation that have been generously provided by the following: ● The Custodial Staff for preparing the school campus for the ceremony. ● Thomas Snowden for his coordination of the musical performances. ● Luisa Batista-Gallo and Marisa Kroger, Senior Class Advisors, for their wisdom and guidance to the Class of 2021. ● The Parents’ Organization, particularly co-presidents Maureen Brophy and Cecelia Mitchell. For their invaluable support this past year. Congratulations to the Class of 2021! You have touched the lives of many during your tenure at Rye High School. It is our hope the gifts you have shared with others will define your class in future years. You have been an inspiration of strength and compassion. I thank you for the many lives you have touched in the Rye community and beyond. We are proud of your accomplishments and look forward to hearing of your achievements in future years.
