Rules and Organisation Considerations 2018 Time limits • Performances should not exceed the time limit. To provide a performance of value, the minimum time limit should be met, however, it is not necessary to fill the entire allocated time. Judges will time each performance, however will not acknowledge during a performance if time is up, as this can be distracting. Excessive time may incur penalty. Time will start at the end of the introduction. • There will be three minutes only allowed between presentations so any sets, props etc. must be minimal. Sound effects and music • For scenes, monologues and duologues, pre-recorded music and/or sound effects may be used. However, make sure that it ties in with the interpretation of and enhances the performance. Performers may be accompanied by live musician using own instruments. Costumes and Props • Actors may present their performance in any costume appropriate or in blacks. • Props and any set are their own responsibility. Remember judging is on the acting Number of entries • An individual may enter only one monologue but may be involved also in one duologue and/or one group scene performance. An individual may perform in one duologue and one group scene. No individual shall appear in more than one monologue, one duologue and one group presentation. An individual therefore can be judged in three separate categories. Dance, Song, Music • Dance section. Performance of original choreography inspired by a Shakespeare play or Sonnet. This may be choreographed by someone else. The music does not have to be original e.g. from Mendelson’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. • Original song or musical piece based on a play or sonnet. Words from the play/sonnet may be used but music must be original. • Music written by a composer e.g. Mendelssohn for a play may be used for dance or instrumental. • Performers may present their entry in any costume appropriate to the piece.
MONOLOGUE GUIDELINES for 2018 • Time limit 1-3 minutes (Juniors) 2-4 minutes (Seniors and Open) • 1 actor • A performance of a soliloquy/monologue from any of Shakespeare’s plays or sonnets Rules and regulations • Editing is permitted if necessary, to eliminate another character or to fit into the time limit. • Begin and end the scene wherever suitable. • Use original Shakespeare language. Do not add extra dialogue. Use of ‘modern’ English will incur a penalty. • The performance may use parts of several scenes or even plays cleverly edited together • Sound effects and/or music may be used, only if it enhances meaning and the interpretation. Criteria for adjudication • Character/Believability • Emotional commitment • Development of character • Focus/energy • Staging/Blocking • Vocal delivery/use of language • Understanding of the text • Clarity of ideas • Interpretation from page to stage This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed
DUOLOGUE GUIDELINES for 2018 • time limit 3-5 minutes • number of actors - 2 actors (additional director permitted) • The age category will be that of the eldest entrant e.g. A 12-year-old and a 14-year-old = Senior; 13-year-old plus 18-year-old = Open • A performance of a scene from any of Shakespeare’s plays containing two characters • The performance may use parts of several scenes or even plays cleverly edited together Rules and regulations • Edit the scene if necessary, to eliminate another character or to fit into the time limit. • Begin and end the scene wherever suitable. • Use original Shakespeare language. Do not add extra dialogue. Use of ‘modern’ English will incur a penalty. • Sound effects and music may be used, only if it enhances meaning and the interpretation. Criteria for adjudication • Character/Believability • Emotional commitment • Development of character • Focus/energy • Staging/Blocking • Relationship with other actor/character • Vocal delivery/use of language • Understanding of the text • Clarity of ideas • Interpretation from page to stage
GROUP SCENE GUIDELINES for 2018 • time limit 5-15 minutes • 3 -12 actors (additional director permitted) • The age category will be that of the eldest entrant e.g. A 12-year-old, 13-year-old and a 14-year- old = Senior; 13-year-old, 15-year-old plus 18-year-old = Open • A performance of a scene from any of Shakespeare’s play • The performance may use parts of several scenes or even plays cleverly edited together Rules and regulations • Choose a scene that is either a turning point for a character or the plot. • Use original Shakespeare language. Do not add extra dialogue. Use of ‘modern’ English will incur a penalty. • Sound effects and music may be used, only if it enhances meaning and the interpretation. Criteria for adjudication • Character/Believability • Emotional commitment • Development of relationships/interaction between characters • Focus/energy/concentration • Staging/Blocking • Relationship with other actors/characters • Vocal delivery/use of language • Understanding of the text • Clarity of ideas • Interpretation from page to stage
MUSIC/SONG/DANCE GUIDELINES for 2018 • time limit 3-5 minutes • number of performers 1-10 (one additional accompanist or conductor permitted) • A performance of a piece of music, a song or a dance in response to a theme, characters, plot of a chosen play or lyrics taken from a play’s text or a sonnet. • Music may be previously composed by another for a play or your original composition. Rules and regulations • Music only may be pre-recorded for the song or dance section. • The instrumental music section may use some pre-recorded music, but the main instrument/s must be played live. • Music and dance may be in any genre or style • Performers must provide all their own instruments and or recordings. • There will be no rehearsal time although brief access to sound technician before your session may be allowed. Music on mp3 to be provided one week before the Festival Criteria for adjudication • Technique and performance • Successful storytelling through chosen medium • Relationship between performance and development of theme, character, plot, scene, sonnet, lyrics etc. • Originality • Ability to create suitable mood, atmosphere, emotion • Interpretation from page to music, voice or dance.
