RTRS CERTIFIED PRODUCER BRIEF About RTRS Certification The production of RTRS-certified soy is environmentally correct, socially beneficial, and economically viable, following with the requirements of the RTRS Standard for Responsible Soy Production. As an international and multi-stakeholder organization, RTRS is a neutral, reliable, holistic and skilled partner working towards the global goal of deforestation-free and sustainable soy sourcing. The RTRS Standard for Responsible Soy Production provides a holistic approach with social, economic and environmental requirements and benefits. It is a zero-deforestation and zero-conversion scheme with a rigorous, independent and transparent verification and certification process. The principles of the RTRS Standard for Responsible Soy Production are: Legal compliance and good business practices Responsible labor conditions Responsible community relations Environmental responsibility Good agricultural practices 02
RTRS CERTIFIED PRODUCER BRIEF RTRS certified material options There are two ways of acquiring RTRS certified material: RTRS credits or RTRS physical soy. RTRS credits Buying credits requires an audit, verification and certification under the RTRS Standard for Responsible Soy Production at farm level (production level), conducted by accredited certification bodies. There is no need to certify the entire supply chain. 1 credit is equivalent to 1 ton of RTRS certified soy. The RTRS credit options are: • RTRS credits • non-GMO • non-Paraquat The RTRS credits can also be acquired by choosing the Regional credits approach. This regional focus encourages responsible soy production at local level, in a specific province, region or country, such as, for example, Chaco (Argentina), Mato Grosso (Brazil) or India. The regional credits approach might: • contribute to farmers’ sustainable production within a specific region, investing in and therefore fostering responsible production, creating a critical mass of RTRS certified material. • establish a connection and build dialogue between supply (farmers) and demand (traders, brand owners/retailers), fostering sustainable relashionships. • make a tangible contribution to good agricultural practices, forest conservation and natural land preservation in countries where soy is produced. • collaborate in making the physical uptake at regional level much more feasible as well as in making a transition from regional credits to regional physical soy uptake. RTRS CERTIFIED PRODUCER BRIEF RTRS physical soy Buying physical soy requires the entire supply chain to be certified by the RTRS Chain of Custody (CoC) Standard. This certification guarantees that the soy originates from certified sources. The certification process guarantees that each step of the soy production value chain, from the production level onwards, has been audited, verified, and certified by accredited certification bodies. Within the RTRS physical soy the chain of custody systems are: • Mass Balance: Soy from one or more RTRS-certified facilities/sites may be mixed with non-certified soy sources, provided that the mixing process is monitored by the company’s management (controlled mixing). • Country Material Balance: RTRS-certified operators are allowed to aggregate the mass balance accounting systems of several physical sites as one single mass balance accounting system at national level. • Site Mass Balance: RTRS-certified operators maintain separate accounting systems at site level. • Segregated: Soy from one or more RTRS-certified facilities is stored keeping it physically separated from non-RTRS certified soy. RTRS options NON-GMO NON-PARAQUAT REGIONAL RTRS CREDITS CREDITS CREDITS CREDITS MASS BALANCE SEGREGATED SOY NON-GMO SOY EU RED SOY • COUNTRY MATERIAL BALANCE • SITE MASS BALANCE How to acquire RTRS certified material The acquisition of RTRS-certified material (credits or physical material) must be implemented through the RTRS Trading Platform. Learn how! The RTRS Trading Platform is an online and global tool provided by RTRS. This platform connects stakeholders in the sustainable soy value chain and registers the transactions of RTRS certified material (credits or physical flow). 04
RTRS CERTIFIED PRODUCER BRIEF RTRS-certified soy volume is transformed into an equivalent RTRS quantity of credits RTRS TRADING RTRS CREDITS CAN BE SOLD CERTIFIED SOY PLATFORM TO DIFFERENT ORGANIZATIONS The physical soy is sold through traditional sales, as non RTRS certified STORAGE TRANSPORT PROCESSING END USER The RTRS Trading Platform allows to register and record: • RTRS credit transactions independently of the physical flow, • RTRS physical flow operations All the parties involved must have an RTRS Trading Platform account. Besides, each transaction must be registered to be considered valid. The Platform also allows reselling/intermediation of both, RTRS credits and physical flow. 05
