MATT'S MESSAGE ceomatt harris Last weekend signified the half-way point of the 2019 Tooheys Newcastle RL competition and after 8 rounds of football it appears that we have two teams firming as frontrunners. The competition ladder has West Newcastle leading the way on 12 points with South Newcastle one win behind on 10 points. Both teams have a wash-out game to be played later in the season. The three coalfield teams (Kurri Kurri, Cessnock and Maitland) follow on eight points with the Goannas also having played one less game. Central (6 pts), Macquarie (4pts) and Lakes United (4pts) round out the final 3 positions. In round 8 action Central Newcastle proved too strong for Macquarie securing an important 22 ? 6 home win while Cessnock clocked up their third win on the trot with a tight 4 point win over arch rivals Kurri Kurri. On Sunday competition leaders West Newcastle were far too strong for Maitland wining 44 ? 10 and second place South Newcastle maintained their recent form with a resounding 40 point win over Lakes United. This weekend West Newcastle host Lakes United at Harker Oval in what will be a tough challenged for the young Seagulls squad. At Maitland Sportsground Cessnock will aim to make it four wins from their last four starts when they take on a wounded Maitland Pickers team. The third Saturday match is Macquarie v Kurri Kurri at Peacock Field with the Scorpions desperate to kick-start their season and remain in touch with the top 5. The Pickers v Goannas match will be the BarTV live-stream feature game and can be viewed via our website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au) or Facebook page (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League). Next weekend is the second of our representative rounds with a number of our first grade, u19 and blues tag players involved in representative matches. Ten of or senior rebels will be in Brisbane as part of a NSWRL pioneers squad taking on the QRL rangers while our emerging and blues tag rebels teams head to Sydney on the Saturday to play a Cronulla Sharks academy squad and the St Joeys blues tag team. Good luck to all players, coaches and support staff. A reminder to keep up-to-date with everything Newcastle Rugby League by following us on Facebook (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League), Twitter (@Newcastle_RL) and via our new website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au).?In 2019 Business Plaza Cup live-scores are also available via the NSWRL website (https://www.nswrl.com.au/draw/?competition=151). www.markhugesfoundation.com.au

CENTRAL BUTCHER BOYS THE BUTCHERS PAPER Today we come up against the Lions in a great day of footy, last week our LLT continued their great form with a good win against Macquarie. Our U19 team won in the dying moments in a high-quality game of football, both Macquarie and Central played hard and passionate. Open grade and reserve grade both played well but were beaten by Macquarie, wins are not far off for our young crop of lower grade players. A much needed win in 1st grade after 2 straight defeats, our boys played good football to lead 12 -0 at half time and going on to win 22-6 when the final whistle blew. After two and half seasons the O?Neils Tyre and Auto kick for cash has been won! Last Saturday Tim Lovekin won $600 cash. Many thanks to O?Neils Tyre and Auto Central Newcastle RLFC thanks it?s wonderful sponsors, supporters, volunteers, committee and support staff without these people our club would not be here. NELSON BAY SHARKS The Sharks took on Maitland today at Salamander, Maitland scored 2 early tries before the Sharks began to complete their sets, a late penalty goal from the pickers took the score to 12 nil, before a great solo run from Hayley Dews made the half time score 12 - 4. A couple of costly turnovers on the Sharks line in the 2nd half had them under pressure with Maitland scoring again. Sharks then made a number of line breaks before Raegan McIlwain ran into space to score the Sharks 2nd, final score 20-8. The Sharks host the Cessnock at Tomaree next Sunday 10am. Players player was Shane Baldwin with strong runs, line breaks and big tackles and coaches award to Lewis Hughes stepping up from 19s and did not look out of place in reserve grade Grade ? 3r d Gt r ade - Heddon Gr et a Hot el Third grade had a much improved performance this week both with and without the ball getting back in the winners circle. The win came at a cost losing some key players for and extended period and depth will now be tested. Ethan Niszczot had a great return picking up a hat trick and Players Player and Rhys Atkinson picked up the Coaches award for his best game of the season. 19?s - M it ch ell?s Ph ysiot h er apy 19s were in control up until half time. Unfortunately some decisions lead to compounding other issues which resulted in not collectively stepping up in the 2nd half. Again a game that slipped through our fingers. Players player Dane Corben. LT - Heddon Gr et a Hot el The HGH ladies BluesTag team put in gutsy performance to come away with a 28-4 win with only 13 players. The ladies have set the standard and now need to find this consistency every week. Halfback Kathleen Maier put in a excellent performance with the way she led the team around the park and got the coaches award. Players player was Tarin Burns
M ACQUARIE SCORPIONS PATRON: M R COL BURNS: Fir st Gr ade: Went down to Central 22-6 in what was a must win for the Scorpions. Although the Scorps tried hard they found it difficult to get over the try line especially early in the first half when they had the field position. Unfortunately the injury curse struck again with winger Kyle Tracy and backrower Ben Roose were forced out of the game. Hopefully some of the injured players can return against Kurri this weekend. Reser ve Gr ade: Came away with a very strong 22-12 win and cement their position in the top five of the competition. It was great to see Logan Edwards make a return for the Scorpions. Tries were scored by Brad Prior, Blake Richardson, Logan Edwards and Alek Hall who all played well. The result was even more pleasing with seven players for the Scorpions eligible for Under 19s. Open Gr ade: Continued on their winning ways with a 22-10 win and also consolidate their position in the top five of the competition. This side is now starting to play to their potential and there is no reason why they can?t play in another grand final at the end of the season. Un der 19s: A heart breaking 18-16 loss to the Scorpions after being down 14-0 at half time. The Scorps scored 4 unanswered tries in the 2nd half but unfortunately could not kick a goal and with only 1 minute remaining on the clock Central scored out wide from a chip kick to take the points away from the Scorps. Ladies Leagu e Tag: Unfortunately came up against a very good Central side and went down 62-0, but at no stage did the girls give up and are trying very hard in every game. A big thankyou to all the players who backed up last weekend, showing great club spirit.

LAKES UNITED SEAGULLS The Mc Cloy Group Lakes United came up South Newcastle last weekend at Cahill Oval with mixed success winning 3 from 5 games. The Blues Tag Ladies played out a tough loss going down 12-8 after taking an early lead. Our Seagalls are very close to knocking off Souths and with greater concentration across the entire game they will get them if they meet in the finals series. I am sure coach Logan Redman will have them firing for their next game to keep the ladies in touch with the competition leaders. The 19s continued their winning ways with a 34-14 win over the Lions once again. The 19?s are starting to come together as a unit and have every chance of figuring strongly in the finals as we turn the corner into the back end of the season. The Open Grade again once again showed their class beating Souths 22-6 in what was a one sided affair. Opens are in a strong position going into the second half of the season having only dropped one game so far. The Reserve Grade Seagulls come away with their second win for the year and were too good across the park for the previously undefeated Lions. Big games by Mitch Bailey upfront and Aarron McGrady, while Steve Leask worked tirelessly all game while Blake Dean must be banging on the first grade door given his great start to the year and ability to manage a game. 1 st Grade started strongly scoring inside the first minute to take an early lead, the celebration were short lived though due to poor handling and soft defence up the middle. What is a worrying trend in first grade for the first half of the year, there is a lack of respect for ball control, doing the basics well and discipline. Again Cal Guest played well along with Jaybel up front. Lakes have our ?Day at the Races? on 29th June, there are limited seats left so if anyone is interested in attending or sponsoring a race see all the details on our Facebook page.
