Regional Employment Bulletin South West & South Wales August 2017 On behalf of the Career Transition Partnership (CTP), welcome to the South West & South Wales Employment Bulletin. It will provide you with the latest jobs and business news from across the region and highlights a selection of the latest regional vacancies on our job site, RightJob. Regional Overview This region covers the geographical area that includes; Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire, Hampshire (West), Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and South Wales. The region has the highest percentage of rural land of any English region, three quarters of the total land area being agricultural. The largest city is Bristol. Other major urban centres include Plymouth, Swindon, Gloucester, Exeter, Bath, and the South East Dorset conurbation of Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch. The most economically productive areas are Bristol, the M4 corridor and South East Dorset which are all areas with the best links to London. South Wales is made up of Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Swansea and Neath Port Talbot, Bridgend, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Merthyr Tydfil, Caerphilly, Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen, Vale of Glamorgan, Monmouthshire, Newport and Cardiff. The areas of highest job density are centred around Cardiff, and along the M4 motorway that runs through Newport, Cardiff and on to Swansea. The major urban areas are Cardiff, Swansea and Newport. Cardiff and the wider Vale of Glamorgan are the significant economic areas in South East Wales. Cardiff city relies principally on the retail, finance, media and tourism sectors and has experienced major regeneration particularly in the city centre and around Cardiff Bay. Each of these areas has its own varying set of employment factors which you need to take into account when job searching. An unprecedented recruitment drive has been unveiled by supermarket chain Aldi - with salaries and benefits larger than you might think. Some 4,000 jobs are up for grabs across the country both in stores and distribution centres to match Aldi's plans for expansion and rising sales figures. The company has said that it received 900,000 new shoppers in the past year and is on course to open 1,000 new stores by 2022 to add to its current roster of 700, reports CornwallLive. In Plymouth, stores in Greenbank, Union Street and the upcoming new store in Southway. Building work is well underway and the opening soon banners are up - meaning the hiring has also begun. Visit the Building Plymouth Job Shop to find out about and apply for roles in Construction - 10,000 additional jobs in Plymouth by 2020 According to the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), Construction output in the South West is projected to grow at an annual average rate of 3.1% in the five years to 2021, the second fastest rate after Wales. The region will benefit from new nuclear build over the forecast period. The annual average employment growth is predicted to be 0.7%, slightly higher than the UK rate of 0.6%. The City of Plymouth is predicted to require a further 10,000 additional construction jobs by 2020 and local construction companies are particularly keen to engage with military Service leavers. Revealed: The top 150 businesses in Devon and Cornwall The list of Top 150 companies was revealed at the launch of the Western Morning News Annual Business Guide 2017 this week. Sponsored by the University of Exeter, data compiled by KPMG and with associate sponsors Devon Colleges Group and Pavey Group, the Annual Business Guide acts as a barometer for every sector and geographical area right across the region. Many of these companies are already working with the CTP. Read more New clothing factory could bring 100 jobs to Plymouth Plymouth could have a clothing factory in Union Street employing more than 100 people – in the building that once housed the famous Jaeger plant. Plymouth College of Art is exploring the idea of creating a "sampling unit" which would produce small quantities of clothing – samples – and enable their designers to then approach larger producers. Read more Security guards in plain clothes are going to patrol Brittany Ferries Plain clothes security staff are to be placed on Brittany Ferries' vessels and passengers will face additional bag checks, it has been revealed. The Plymouth-based company has increased security measures for travellers ahead of its summer rush. The security staff won't be armed but gun-toting French military patrols, introduced last year, are continuing. Read more Chris Dawson vows to create 570 jobs at his new £25m Range headquarters The magnate has just submitted plans to construct a new head office and superstore, at Seaton Hill in Derriford, which will be named Elsie Margaret House after his late mother. And Mr Dawson said that if the scheme gets Plymouth City Council backing he will shift 250 staff from his current, overcrowded, HQ at Estover to the new five-storey building. The retail mogul would then go on a recruiting drive and boost numbers to 700, creating 450 new posts across various departments including marketing, buying, e-commerce, IT and accounts. Why are jobs not being filled in Plymouth factories? Plymouth and the South West are facing a recruitment crisis in manufacturing exacerbated by the region's peripheral location, a major conference has heard. The Plymouth Manufacturers Group (PMG) staged an all-day summit to explore the issue at the Future Inn, Derriford, which heard that firms are working with education establishments to try and produce a local supply of talent. Read more The £7.8m project that's going to transform Plymouth is halfway there The council hopes the enormous project will create 1,000 jobs and help Plymouth become a global leader in marine industry. It is being undertaken in phases. The second phase is also now under way, with demolition having taken place. Phase two is home to two listed buildings: the former pay office, believed to have been built around 1808; and the fire station, built as part of the mid-19th century expansion of South Yard. Read more Plymouth has got a critical shortage of lorry drivers because of 'congested roads' Plymouth has a "critical shortage" of lorry drivers and it could be down to congested roads, a new report says. Heavy goods vehicle handlers are in short supply along with other workers in logistics, a sector with lots of job vacancies in the city according to the new Manpower Employment Outlook Survey for the South West. The study reveals there are also vacancies waiting to be filled in Plymouth warehouses and factories. In Exeter, there is a general need for people to fill posts involving driving generally. Read more Aviva makes £75m investment in TrueSpeed's ultrafast broadband Aviva Investors, the global asset management business of Aviva plc, has committed £75 million to TrueSpeed Communications Limited to support the roll out of TrueSpeed’s ultrafast full fibre broadband network across South West England. Thrings has worked with TrueSpeed from formation, providing crucial support, at risk, during a critical time in the company's growth. Established in 2015 to deliver a fibre-optic infrastructure network across South West England, TrueSpeed provides residential and commercial customers with multi-gigabit capable symmetrical speeds through a full fibre network. £3m Cyber Security Centre opens in Gloucester creating 90 jobs A multi-million pound government facility built to help tackle cyber crime has opened in Gloucester – creating 90 jobs. The £3million Cyber Works centre was opened by Defence Minister Harriett Baldwin who said it will protect the UK from complex threats in “the war against Daesh”. It was built by Lockheed Martin UK, the UK-based arm of Lockheed Martin Corporation, a global security and aerospace company. Read more Green lights could still come on for £1.3blln Tidal Lagoon Power project Investors have warned the billion pound-plus Tidal Lagoon project could stall unless the green light is given soon but the author of an independent review into the scheme remains confident. The Gloucester-headquartered firm behind the hugely ambitious £1.3blln project to build a lagoon in Swansea Bay has been waiting for the go-ahead to start building. Ministers are yet to set out plans on exactly where they stand on the scheme – which it is thought will lead to other larger projects around the UK coast – but confidence remains high. Read more Dowty Propellers plans to be in new Gloucester HQ within two years Dowty Propellers is to build a new UK headquarters in Gloucester two years after its factory was destroyed by fire. A blaze tore through the blade manufacturing works in Staverton in February 2015, forcing the company to move to a temporary base in Mitcheldean. The exact location will be announced later this year after a tendering process. It is hoped the new HQ will be up and running in 2019. The company, which is part of GE Aviation, makes propeller systems for both civil and military aircraft. National growth at the double on the menu at Friska as it lands £3m investment Friska, the ‘feel-good food’ café group started by two University of Bath graduates, is aiming to double its number of outlets and expand in cities across the UK after receiving a £3m investment. The Bristol-based firm, founded Griff Holland and Ed Brown, pictured, who met while studying economics at the University of Bath, now operates from nine locations across Bristol, Birmingham and at Luton Airport. The funding from specialist private equity fund manager YFM Equity Partners will be used to drive further growth – taking its chain to 18.. Read more SPARKies awards throw spotlight on Bath’s top tech firms TechSPARK is the information hub for all things tech in Bristol, Bath and the West of England region. The aim is to inform all of those who work in tech in the region by providing news, profiles and resources like events calendars, jobs boards and a lot more. Read more Record number of jobs created by campaigns that market West of England as business hotspot Targeted campaigns aimed at attracting UK and foreign-owned firms to the West of England helped create a record 1,600 jobs last year. The figures, released by inward investment agency Invest Bristol & Bath (IBB), were announced by recently elected Metro Mayor Tim Bowles. IBB said more than half of all companies it supported were new or expanding digital and hi-tech businesses. Nearly 800 jobs were created in this sector alone. Read more St Austell Printing Company Expansion A Cornish printing company has expanded its capacity and gained new contracts following support from the Business Investment for Growth 2 programme. St Austell Printing Company required investment into new machinery and equipment to enable effective and efficient finishing of playing cards, allowing the business to take on a major new contract with the producers of Top Trump cards, Winning Moves. The construction of the1.2 acre facility has been supported by the South West Growth Fund with a grant of £80,000, and ensures the company continues to drive its market leading position as the only provider of Zero to Landfill services in the South West. Devon Contract Waste’s previous facility on Marsh Barton Trading Estate was destroyed by a devastating fire in March this year. The new Distribution Hub is equipped with the latest baling technology to triple the company’s waste handling capacity to 300,000tonnes of waste per year, enabling the pioneering business to extend its services to more companies across Devon, Somerset and Cornwall. Read more Plans Submitted For New Innovation Centre in Paignton Plans have been lodged for the proposed Electronics and Photonics Innovation Centre (EPIC) in Paignton. EPIC is being developed by the Torbay Development Agency (TDA), on behalf of Torbay Council. An application has now been submitted to the council for a 41,300 sq ft innovation Centre, together with car parking, landscaping and an accompanying estate road. £6.5M Investment Brings Graphic Controls To Paignton Graphic Controls is set to relocate to Paignton following a £6.5m investment from Torbay Council in a new facility. The company supplies consumable products for industrial, medical and gaming markets with manufacturing facilities in the US, Canada, Europe and the UK. It ships to more than 60,000 customers in about 80 countries worldwide. It required improved production facilities as an alternative to its current premises at Baltic Wharf in Totnes where it has been based for the past 15 years. Graphic Controls considered sites in Europe but the investment from Torbay Council ensured it remained in South Devon, safeguarding existing jobs and enabling further growth in Torbay in the future. Read more New £25m rail station for South Wales with 10,000 new job business park on track for 2020 opening A new £25m rail station in South Wales has been given UK Government backing. The aim is for it to be at the heart of a huge business, retail and leisure development that could create 10,000 new jobs. Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has backed plans for Cardiff Parkway Station, between Cardiff and Newport at St Mellons. Read More A family-owned aviation firm in Bridgend is now on the world's biggest stock market An aviation company in Bridgend has found its way onto the world's biggest stock market. Aircraft Maintenance Support Services (AMSS) has been acquired by American company JBT Corporation, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, for £10m. The family-owned business was founded 40 years ago by Duncan Barber and manufactures and maintains ground support equipment. His son Scott is the firm's managing director. Read more Three hundred jobs to be created at new train building factory in Newport Three hundred jobs will be created at a new train and tram factory that is to be built at Newport. Spanish company Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) is investing £30m in the new plant, described as a centre of excellence for the manufacture of UK rolling stock. More than 100 locations in the UK were considered for the plant, with the Celtic Business Park in Newport chosen from one of four potential sites that were short listed. New £100m M4 to Cardiff Airport link road being considered as key project in £1.2bn City Deal A new £100m road from the M4 to Cardiff Airport as well as a series of major park and ride schemes for thousands of vehicles on the Metro rail network could be backed as part of the £1.2bn City Deal. The City Deal, which covers the 10 local authorities that make up the Cardiff Capital Region, over the next 20 years aims to create 25,000 new jobs as well as leveraging in a further £4bn of private sector finance. Read more Circuit of Wales backers considering new deal with no taxpayer guarantee The main financial backer of the Circuit of Wales project said it is considering a new funding deal without any taxpayer guarantee. The project for a professional racetrack on 830 acres of de-registered common land in Blaenau Gwent, was dealt a huge blow yesterday when the Welsh Government confirmed it was not providing a £210m guarantee against the cost of the project. Read more Panasonic launches new tablet and expects to produce 10,000 at Cardiff facility in first year A new generation of rugged laptops and tablets designed for the office and workshop will be produced at Panasonic’s Pentwyn factory in Cardiff. The latest model in the Japanese giant’s Toughbook range, targeted at businesses and public sector organisations, is being launched this week. Read more New Cirencester HQ For Södra Wood Södra Wood Ltd, formerly known as Crown Timber, has relocated its UK and Irish operations to new headquarters in Cirencester. Södra Wood Ltd was formed following the acquisition and acts as the group's sales and distribution company in UK and Ireland. £5.8m Funding Round For Bristol Robotics Company A Bristol-based robotics, augmented reality and mobile gaming company has completed a £5.8m funding round, led by South Korea- and Singapore-based investors. Reach Robotics was founded in 2013 by Silas Adekunle, Chris Beck and John Rees to develop a next generation robotics platform, with robotic engineering combined with mobile gaming and augmented reality. It has developed the MekaMon intelligent gaming robot. The business was formed as part of the Bristol Robotics Laboratory incubator programme and is now based at Future Space, a workspace for innovators located at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol). Read more £3m Funding For Gloucester Data Centre A £3m loan from the Gloucestershire Infrastructure and Investment Fund (GIIF) to support the development of a new data centre in Gloucester has been approved. The Shield House scheme covers the refurbishment and extension of disused premises in Barnwood. It is hoped that the new centre will bring new high-technology employment to Gloucestershire, creating numerous new jobs. Read more Energy And Services Provider Expands In Bristol Bouygues Energies and Services has increased its presence in Bristol, taking more office space at West Point Row. The energy and services provider now occupies a total of 4,512 sq ft in Unit 1 in the Bradley Stoke building after extending into 2,189 sq ft of office space on the ground floor. It already occupies the first floor. The new lease for the ground floor space is linked to Bouygues' lease for first floor space, with both running until 2021. Read more Funding Awarded For £60m Automotive Research Centre Almost £30m in government funding has been awarded to support the development of a new facility for research into advanced propulsion systems, located at the Bristol and Bath Science Park. The centre aims to lead the development of future generations of ultra-low emission vehicles and attract sector-related businesses to the region, generating economic growth. It will utilise the engineering expertise of the University of Bath. IAAPS is expected to stimulate more than £67m in additional automotive research investment by 2025, creating additional turnover of £800m for the UK automotive sector and supporting about 1,900 new jobs. The hub cost £100 million to build and is the size of 14.5 football pitches. Read more South Wales valleys action plan for 7,000 new jobs An action plan to create 7,000 jobs and revitalise the south Wales valleys has been published. Six towns will be hubs for economic growth in surrounding communities, stretching from Neath to Cwmbran. Read more These are the highest paying tech jobs in Bristol Adzuna, a national job site, has revealed which tech jobs in Bristol have the highest number of live vacancies, and which are the highest paid. The data taken from live job advertisements show that IT is the highest paying sector of 2017 in the UK, with Bristol jobs in the sector paying well above the national average salary. Record levels of employment for the Bristol region, but wages are still shrinking Employment in the South West has reached another record high - with 79.2 per cent of those of working age in a job, figures released today have revealed. Nationally the employment rate is at a record high of 74.9 per cent, meaning a record 32.01 million people are now in work. Unemployment is down 64,000 on the quarter and is at the lowest rate since 1975.
