                                                                              1 Corinthians Ch 12 v 12

We seem to have had an exciting week in school with lots of different visitors to school. The
children have been continuing their focus on their topics in class.

In EYFS this week the children have taken part in learning opportunities about Superheroes. They
have listened to Superhero stories and then retold the story using their own words. They used
different art materials to create their own superhero and have written their own Superhero number
bonds to 5 and 10. Throughout the week the children have taken part in a range of special
‘Superhero Training events’. This has involved the children designing and then creating their own
Superhero vehicle using a range of construction materials, decorating their own Superhero mask,
and spending time at the mud kitchen making special potions. The children have particularly
enjoyed using the big wooden boxes and planks to create their own den. Whilst in the den the
children have been encouraged to write letters to their Superhero friends.

Thank you to everyone in Year 1 and Year 2 who has returned the blue and yellow plant pots to
Miss Day. We hope the plants made it home safely and are now growing happily. Please send in
photos of your pumpkins and bulbs when they have grown or bloomed. The children have also
begun planting their Messages of Hope Cornflower seeds. These will be coming home shortly. In
Year 1 and Year 2 the children completed their investigations into conditions for growth and what
plants grow from. They also used the laptops to research a desert habitat and found the Sahara is
roughly the same size as the USA! The children have learnt about position and direction in Maths,
moving the camel around the desert and the wolf around the three pigs’ houses. Jerry has also been
hiding and the Year 1s have had to describe where he is. In English, the children have continued
learning the Tinga Tinga stories and breaking them down into the beginning, the middle and end of
the stories. In History the children have been comparing the interiors and exteriors of old and new
houses and the objects found in them.

The historians in Tiger Class have been finding out a little about how people lived in Ancient
Greece. They have used sources such as pots from the time to work out a little about what life
might have been like. In Maths, Tigers are continuing to look at fractions and to focus on reading
scales for measurement. In English, Tigers have been continuing to write instructions. This week
they are focusing on how to get to the Forest of Adventure. The artists in Tigers have been
continuing work on their scratch pots. This week they had to carefully apply black paint over their
design. Everyone is looking forward to the next stage when the scratching begins. Tigers have also
Rivenhall C. of E. Primary School
started to learn the months of the year in French.

Year 5 have been learning about the life of the poet John Lyons, while Year 6 have been working
very hard to write, edit and publish writing in a range of different genres. Today they all enjoyed
acting out short plays in groups, thinking about the type of dialogue different characters would use.
Year 6 will be using these ideas to write a short story using the dialogue to move the action on, and
distinguishing between formal and informal speech. In Maths, Year 6 are working on an
investigation based around a bakery, including working out different amounts for recipes and
finding the best value offers in a supermarket. Year 5 have worked on translations and co-
ordinates, as well as converting between different units of time. Year 5 have also enjoyed two Third
Space Learning sessions. Lions have also been finding out about the Egyptian Pyramids and using
Scratch to write simple programs.
This week we were very excited to meet the children who will be joining our school in September
and welcoming them and their families into our school community. We were able to introduce key
staff and talk about preparing to start school. We look forward to seeing the children again when
they visit later in the term.

Many children across the school have continued their online tuition with Third Space Learning.
This is a fantastic opportunity that allows 1:1 tuition to support learning. The children are enjoying
their sessions and making progress with their learning.

We were very pleased to welcome Strider to school on Thursday to celebrate the success of our
Walk to School Scheme. We are currently the school with the highest engagement in Essex.
Strider met with the children and played games during the lunchtime. Each child also received an
extra special badge for their collection.

We have also begun our swimming sessions this week for those children in Year 4, 5 and 6 that are
unable to swim. We were extremely proud of the children and their behaviour during this session
and we are looking forward to continuing with these.

Thank you for your continued support of the school.

                                                           Maths Problem of the Week.
Reasoning is a key part of Maths and is one of the main
aims of the Maths National Curriculum. It helps us to
develop a deeper understanding which we can apply to
solving problems and use in different situations. This
term we are focusing on helping the children to explain
their reasoning clearly. Each week every class is going to
have a special ‘Problem of the Week’. Children will have
the opportunity to try to solve this problem during the
week. We are going to share some of these problems with
you so you can try them for yourselves at home.

This is the Year 1 and 2 problem for next week
