WELCOME FROM THE CLASSICS FOUNDER Welcome to the inaugural Snowy Classic! Jindabyne is the perfect place to base the 5th Gran Fondo in Bicycling Australia’s event series, The Classics. We are extremely proud to be in the region and are planning an absolute thriller of an event. The Snowy Mountains region is truly spectacular and among the nation’s most impressive and rewarding places to ride. For those who’ve ridden a previous Classic, MEET this is likely to be your most challenging yet as you tackle some of Australia’s most THE TEAM gruelling and scenic country. James Yaffa, The Classics We’ve all been through several years of disruption, and the Snowy Mountains region Founder has been hit particularly hard by low visitor numbers due to various state lockdowns. The place is an adventure paradise and mecca of all things cycling on road, gravel, and David Kemp, mountain biking. Your presence in these towns will be welcomed and we’re sure you’ll Ride Director enjoy the food, wine, and amazing scenery that makes up this iconic Australian region. Holly Kemp, Course Operations Riders are absolutely everything to us and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you Vanessa Burges, for your support. Some of you are doing your first Classic in our series of events, and Event Director some are doing their 11th! Charlotte Acreman We are deeply grateful for the ongoing support of funding partner DNSW, along with Event Manager Snowy Monaro Council. Their team have the vision and dedication it takes to put on a Jasmine great experience for our riders. Sutherland, Marketing Manager Also, a massive thank you to our volunteers who without the event simply wouldn’t be Nat Bromhead, possible. And to our commercial partners who continue to back the Classics year after Editor-In-Chief year. We encourage all participants to meet them while enjoying the Event Village. Claudia Oprya, Communications & The mountains are your friends, enjoy. Client Services Sincerely, Harry Kooros, James Yaffa, Advertising & Sponsorship Founder, The Classics Manager BROUGHT TO YOU BY 2
RIDE DIRECTOR WELCOME MESSAGE Welcome to the 2022 Snowy Classic! I hope you have been clocking up the KMs and the vertical metres in preparation for the lung busting and leg burning that awaits on the Beloka King and Queen of the Mountain. A 3km vertical climb with an average 10.3% grade, maxing out at +14%, will be an epic challenge for most riders. This KOM/QOM climb is so brutal that, thanks to Black Sheep Cycling, the fastest AND the slowest male and female riders up Beloka will receive a $200 voucher. And better yet, all riders who successfully complete the Below KOM/QOM climb will receive a $50 Black Sheep Cycling voucher. For the riders doing the Maxi Classic, the climbs don’t finish at Beloka. You will tackle the ascent to Perisher Valley that climbs 990m over 22km. Remember to keep left as you will be riding out and back in this section of the course. Another first for The Classics series is that the Snowy Classic will be held on fully closed roads with support from NSW Police, Transport for NSW and the Snowy Monaro Regional Council. We hope that will give you a full race experience and ensured safety, with only the convoy and support vehicles on course with you! There will be Traffic Controllers and Police out on course for your safety and we will also have volunteers providing direction, so please follow their instructions and listen to their warnings. Should the need arise, any emergency services vehicles will have right of way on course. Please keep left if you see/hear lights and sirens. Keep safety at the forefront of your mind when out riding. While the council have tried their best to maintain the roads in good condition, there may be potholes and repairs due to the recent rain deluge in the area. Please point out any holes to your fellow riders. This guide will give you all the details you need for the event, for each course, how to prepare and what to bring on the day. If you then have any further questions before the event, please don’t hesitate to flick us an email at info@snowyclassic.com.au. Otherwise, come ready to ride an unforgettable cycling event around a scenic course. We will be at the finish line to cheer you in. You have done it; you have conquered your course! Encourage your family and friends to come down and celebrate with you at the Event Village afterwards. Enjoy a well-deserved cold drink (a complimentary one for riders), grab a bite to eat, sit back, relax, on the finish line watching fellow riders come home with Lake Jindabyne in the background. Enjoy the afternoon entertainment! Cheers, David Kemp Ride Director BROUGHT TO YOU BY 3
WELCOME FROM THE NSW GOVERNMENT On behalf of the NSW Government, I am delighted to welcome you to the Snowy Classic, part of Bicycling Australia’s Gran Fondo series. We are proud to support this event through our tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW and know that events like the Snowy Classic make a significant contribution to the visitor economy of Jindabyne and the surrounding region. The Snowy Classic attracts thousands of participants, officials and spectators who stay in our hotels, visit our attractions and spend locally, bringing substantial economic and social benefits to the local community. While the Snowy Mountains region is famous for its snow-capped peaks, during the warmer months it becomes a spectacular adventure playground with a fantastic array of cycling and hiking tracks along with the warm hospitality of the local Alpine community. I wish all competitors the best of luck and encourage you to take some time outside the cycling event to explore the region and enjoy the cafes, specialty stores, and galleries perched on the banks of beautiful Lake Jindabyne.
