WELCOME FROM THE CLASSICS FOUNDER Welcome to the original Classic in our series of events. It’s the 5th edition of the Bowral Classic and this year we are super-excited to deliver three events over two days, with our first-ever Dirty Bowral to be held in the Belanglo State Forest on Saturday morning. Later that day we’ll have our first ever criterium, the Bowral Crit sanctioned by AusCycling! Like you, we are very excited to return to the Southern Highlands after postponements due to COVID. Since the inaugural event in 2016, the Bowral Classic has developed into a fun and social weekend of all things cycling in a region with a deep and rich history. And it’s not just Bowral, but the surrounding villages of Berrima, Moss Vale, Bundanoon, and Robertson – it truly is the perfect place to ride a bike. Your presence in these towns will be welcomed and we’re sure you’ll enjoy the food, wine, pies, cakes, and amazing MEET scenery that makes up this stunning region. THE TEAM Riders are absolutely everything to us and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you James Yaffa, for your support. Some of you are doing your first Classic in our series of events, and The Classics some are doing their 10th! Founder David Kemp, We are also deeply grateful for the ongoing support of funding partner Destination Ride Director NSW, and our loyal commercial partners who continue to back the Bowral Classic year in, year out! I would also like to thank Wingecarribee Council and Destination Southern Angela McGlinchey, Event Director Highlands who have backed us from day one and continue to have the vision and dedication it takes to make it such a great experience for our riders. Natasha Bunton, Senior Event Also, a massive shout out and thank you to our volunteers, without their support the Manager event would not be possible. Jasmine Sutherland, To our sponsors, thank you! Your support makes this event possible, and we encourage Marketing Manager all participants to meet our partners while enjoying the official Event Village. Nat Bromhead, Editor-In-Chief These companies are leaders in their field, and we are very proud to have them aboard. Claudia Oprya, Communications On behalf of the Bowral Classic team led by Angela McGlinchey, I wish you all the best Assistant and I look forward to seeing you at Dirty Bowral, The Crit and on the start line and at the post-event celebrations in the village! Harry Kooros, Advertising & Sponsorship Sincerely, Manager James Yaffa, Founder, The Classics BROUGHT TO YOU BY 2
WELCOME FROM THE RIDE DIRECTOR Welcome to the 2021 Bowral Classic, it has been too long between drinks at our Event Village! After planning this Bowral Classic for two and a half years now due to COVID, I am very excited that you are finally reading this rider guide. I’d like to welcome all new and returning riders to the event and do hope you enjoy your experience. Following on from the success and feedback of previous years, we have changed the Gran Fondo courses and added a new Village location to best highlight the picturesque towns and valleys of the Southern Highlands. We also have introduced two exciting, new events to the Bowral Classic weekend. For a first in 2021, we will hold the Dirty Bowral. This gravel-plus adventure ride through Belanglo State Forest will throw down the challenge to the gravel and MTB riders. And we have made the jump to the racing scene offering a Criterium around our Event Village on Saturday afternoon. This will offer thrilling entertainment while you check out the Village before the Gran Fondo on Sunday. This is a COVID-safe event, and as per NSW regulations, all riders must be fully vaccinated to attend. Please help ensure your own, and everyone’s safety by checking in via the QR codes, maintaining 1.5m social distancing, and taking advantage of the sanitising stations provided around the event regularly. If you feel unwell or have any flu-like symptoms, please stay at home. This guide will give you all the details you need for the event, for each course, how to prepare and what to bring on the day. If you then have any further questions prior to the weekend, please don’t hesitate to contact us via info@bowralclassic.com.au. Otherwise, come ready to ride an unforgettable weekend of cycling around the scenic southern highlands. Keep safety at the forefront of your mind when out riding. The roads are mostly still open to traffic. Shout out a “Hi” or words of encouragement to other riders on course. Let them know your intent to pass by saying “rider right” to ensure safety on our roads. Remember Dirty Bowral and the Gran Fondo are rides, not races. Ride to your abilities and respect all road rules, traffic, volunteers’ directions and other riders and road users. Post-ride, we look forward to welcoming you back to the Event Village to enjoy a well- deserved cold drink (a complimentary one for riders), grab a bite to eat from the local food trucks and restaurants, sit back, relax, score yourself a comfy beanbag and enjoy the music and afternoon entertainment. The long wait for the 2021 Bowral Classic has been worth it and I look forward to seeing you at the start line Cheers, David Kemp, Ride Director BROUGHT TO YOU BY 3
WELCOME FROM THE NSW GOVERNMENT On behalf of the NSW Government, I would like to welcome you to the Bowral Classic in the beautiful Southern Highlands. The Bowral Classic is a staple fixture in the cycling calendar and there is no better place to host this exciting event, with its picturesque highlands and incredible cycling routes. Proudly supported by the NSW Government through Destination NSW, the Bowral Classic will turbocharge the visitor economy for the region by attracting participants, officials and their supporters to the area, who stay in our hotels, visit our attractions and spend locally. It has been a challenging two years in regional NSW and we know these events are vital to our social and economic recovery, so we are delighted to support the Bowral Classic again. The work of the organisers to get the event up and running is a great feat, and I congratulate all who contributed. I encourage the participants and spectators to savour the delicious food and wine, explore the amazing landscapes and enjoy all the delights this region has to offer. The Hon. Stuart Ayres Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Minister for Trade and Industry BROUGHT TO YOU BY 5
