RHICS 17th Expert Forum Heart Failure: Surgical Options 23 October 2019 8:00 – 12:00 Congress Venue Royal Carlton Hotel, Bologna Registration is free
Greeting Remarks To all my good friends and colleagues, This year’s only meeting of our Society will take place at the wonderful city of Bologna which has an immense historical importance, since it houses the oldest University in Europe – it is said to date back to 1088, and one of the earliest medical schools together with the most notably Schola Medica Salernitana at Salerno in southern Italy, which opened in the 9th century. Antonio Loforte, who worked with me in Berlin for a few years, has invited us to join him since he was elected to host the 2019 Congress of the International Society for Mechanical Support (ISMCS) in Bologna. Antonio suggested that we add an Expert Forum on Heart Failure Surgery. This, I think is a most welcome opportunity not only to highlight and add some of our special interesting topics to the program but also to enjoy the company of many MCS friends in this great hospitable city. Mechanical circulatory support for heart failure has been one of our main fields of introduction since 1987 when we performed the first successful bridge-to-transplant procedure in Germany using Bücherl’s total artificial heart. This was then followed by the initiation of the Berlin Heart Company in 1988, which has been the only of its kind coming from Europe and with whom we developed the VAD systems for children of any age and size. The developed Berlin Heart VAD device for children remains the only available pediatric pump worldwide. Berlin is where we also implanted the first-ever rotational flow VAD worldwide, the DeBakey Micromed pump, in 1998. This is among the many other “firsts” such as the first explantation of a VAD after full cardiac recovery in 1995. I am grateful to Antonio Loforte and wish him and us much success with fruitful new insights and a very pleasant stay in this marvelous city. Likewise, I want to thank Eva Javier Delmo, without whom our Symposium would not be possible. I want to express my high appreciation to Jürgen Ennker for his long-term presidency and continuous support to our goals. All the best, Roland Hetzer Honorary President
Greeting Remarks Dear Colleagues, dear Friends, dear Professor Hetzer, It is a great privilege for me to invite you to the 17th Expert Forum of the Roland Hetzer International Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Society. Starting October 2011 with the first Expert Forum in Lisbon, our symposia have been held worldwide, not only in Europe but also in South and North America, several times Asia and last year (2018) in Moscow, incorporated in the Annual Meeting of the Asian Society for Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery. These reflect the high esteem and recognition garnered by our Society and its Symposia in the scientific world. Our 17th Expert Forum was originally planned in honor of the 75th birthday of Prof. Hetzer to take place during Springtime 2019 in the ever-fascinating and amazing capital city, Berlin. The city is where Professor Hetzer is living and has been taking care of his patients and coworkers since he inaugurated and started the Deutsches Herzzentrum Berlin in 1986, 33 years ago. Under his steering leadership more than 100,000 cardiothorcic and vascular surgical cases including more than 76,000 open heart operations using heart and lung machine were performed. The institution became world famous and a haven for patients seeking treatment for the entire spectrum and complete range of cardiovascular illnesses. During the early years, I had the honor of being part of his team. Being trained by him, I recall that we received hundreds of patients rejected elsewhere from life-saving therapy. He never sent away any suffering human being. There is neither no place nor time to honor all his accomplishments. The making of the Roland Hetzer International Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Society, in this context, paved the way to recognize and acknowledge these enormous achievements. To those who are interested in augmenting their scientific aspirations on top of personal experience, I can only recommend the editorial of our general secretary in HSR Proceedings in Intensive Care and Cardiovascular Anesthesia 2011;3 ( 3) 153-156. As the spring session planned had been postponed, we have now the chance to enjoy the meeting in the lively historical capital city of the north Italian region Emilia-Romagna, Bologna. Taking place in conjunction with 27th Annual Meeting of the International Society
for Mechanical Circulatory Support, we will not only have the chance to listen to the lectures of this well- respected meeting, but also to the very interesting proceedings of the RHICS 17th Expert Forum on „Heart Failure Surgical Options“, which will be given by specialized and internationally well-renowned members of the RHICS and ist friends. We highly appreciate your participation in our Bologna meeting, thereby making it another success, not only scientifically but also by joining again as longtime friends and also as highly-regarded colleagues. Looking forward to meeting you there in Bologna! Jürgen Ennker President
Greeting Remarks Dear colleagues, guests and friends, The RHICS 17th Expert Forum comes together in the beautiful city of Bologna. Once again, our distinguished organizers have been able to put together a superb program. We are extremely thankful to all those who have helped make the RHICS such an outstanding venue for up- to- date views and discussions in the field of cardiovascular medicine. The circle of international experts will again debate the latest developments in our specialty. Seventeen meetings have united and strengthened our international circle of dedicated friends. Thirty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, it is indeed very impressive to see how among those who traveled through the German Heart Center in Berlin a band of experts arose , who continue to pull down walls and open up new perspectives in medicine. Let us express our deep gratitude to the mentors, leaders, experts and good friends and use this meeting to sharpen our focus on the future of cardiovascular science. Let us thank our hosts for their gracious invitation and the organizers for their great work. And let us enjoy the beauty of Bologna, the Science, and Friendship. Best wishes, Matthias Loebe

To honor the mentorship, leadership and contributions of Prof. Dr. Roland Hetzer in the field of cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, the Roland Hetzer International Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Society (RHICS) was founded by cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons who have trained and worked under Prof. Hetzer, including former students, present staff and colleagues from all over the world. The exclusive objectives of the RHICS are: 1. to provide a forum for expert discussion on relevant cardiothoracic issues, to set up guidelines based on conclusions derived from this expert opinion forum 2. to promote cardiothoracic surgical education skills from beyond standardized and statistical (experience-based) medicine to a patient-based medicine wherein treatment approaches are individualized and personalized, and specific high-quality treatment is tailored to the patients’ unique pathology so as to give them an optimal quality of life, after surgery 3. to promote continuing medical education through the holding of regular symposia and meetings and the continuance of clinical and experimental research efforts and the publication of the results in scientific journals, and 4. to foster international collaboration and cooperation in clinical practice and scientific research in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery and associated fields. The RHICS thus hopes to continue the legacy of Prof. Hetzer. After its conception (by Drs. Delmo Walter, Ennker and Loebe) on January 29, 2010 and tremendous concerted efforts by Drs. Gerhard Ziemer, Harald Hausmann, Michele Musci, Thomas Krabatsch, Charles Yankah, Ralf Sodian, Luc Tambeur, Hermann Kuppe and Boris Nasseri, the RHICS was legally founded on May 20, 2011 at 17:30, in the presence of its lawyer, Dr. Maren Bedau, and the Honorary President himself, Prof. Roland Hetzer. The Constitution was signed by Drs. Ziemer, Ennker, Hausmann, Delmo Walter, Musci, Nasseri and Kuppe with distant attendance of M. Loebe (via teleconference from Houston, Texas, USA), which took place at the Deutsches Herzzentrum Library. The RHICS Society was formally inaugurated on June 13, 2011 at the Hotel Intercontinental Berlin. It is now recognized by the German Tax Authorities as a non-profit, tax-exempted scientific organization.
