Minke Whales The dwarf minke does not feed on the Great Barrier Reef, but fattens up on krill in the rich waters of the Antarctic before their annual migration. Many pregnant females will give birth on their northward journey, the single calf being approximately 3 metres in length and weighing 300kg. Dwarf minkes display some extraordinary behaviour such as spy hopping, where they lift their head out of the water and observe the boats above the surface. Often they are seen tail-slapping the water, which may be an acoustic signal to other whales in the vicinity. Minkes are known to breach, but not quite as high as the Humpback Whale, which are also seen on the Great Barrier Reef in the winter months. Possibly the most curious of all the whale species found anywhere in the world. People come from all corners of the planet to experience this annual congregation and can spend anywhere up to 10 hours in the water interacting with them,
Swimming with curious minke whales When we find the dwarf minke whales out on the stunning Ribbon Reefs- (or more often than not, the minkes find us) we can then gear up and slide into the water with the whales. We can take our time as the minkes are so curious, they will come to us and its not at all unusual to spend many hours swimming with and observing the whales. The Code of practice whales are very gentle and Code of Practice friendly towards humans and forDwarf Minke Whale interactions they are just as interested in us as in the Great Barrier Reef we are in them! There is a rope World Heritage Area that you can hold on to so that you can fully relax, enjoy the experience and take it all in!
The Ribbon Reef The Ribbon Reef is incredible for both snorkellers and Divers alike. Starting to the north of Cairns, and finishing to the east of Lizard Island, the Ribbon Reefs are a stunning turquoise chain of 10 individual reefs. Fringing the edge of the continental shelf, this 200km stretch of the Great Barrier Reef lies in a remote region of North Queensland and is only accessible by a few liveaboards. Relatively isolated, these reefs support a huge range of biodiversity from the giant clam with it’s violet fluorescent interior, to the vividly red flame file shell and the elusive leafy scorpion fish. Reef formations include beds of huge plate corals, isolated pinnacles crowned in delicate corals and anemones, walls, channels, caves, canyons and shallow coral gardens.
