Mission in Action When you meet Evelyn it is hard to believe that she is only 16 years of age. This incredible young woman exudes such confidence and wisdom, that all the adults around her listen quietly as she shares her inspiring life perspective. Evelyn grew up in Tooele, Utah with her mom, Mary, and two older siblings. At six months old, Evelyn had a rare reaction to a routine vaccine which, within hours, resulted in paralysis from the neck down. After years of multiple surgeries and intensive therapy, Evelyn was able to walk with assistance and talk. She continues to battle a multitude of health challenges but approaches each day with an infectious smile and positive attitude. Evelyn Goldsberry Evelyn and Mary learned of NAC when she was about eight years old, but their concern about costs initially prevented them from participating. Once NAC PARTICIPANT they realized they could apply for a scholarship, they quickly signed up, with their first activity being on the challenge course. Over time, Evelyn has discovered her passion for everything water: water skiing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and her all-time favorite, river rafting. When Evelyn isn’t at school or NAC, she loves singing, poetry and playing the cello. She is excited to get more involved in school theater and she is currently studying to be a Certified Nursing Assistant. “Life before NAC was two dimensional – I was just in survival mode – now its three-dimensional and I can focus on living my best life.” - EVELYN GOLDSBERRY 8 | Red, White & Snow Red, White & Snow | 9
