We believe that it is in the best interest of our students Superintendent of Schools to make the adjustment. We are making this change to provide our students and teachers with five additional “normal” days of school in a winter that has been very abnormal. It is clear when talking to students and staff from each grade level they desperately want to be back in class. As you know, Cedar Springs Public Schools is required by law to have at least 172 days of instruction for the 2018/19 school year. As weather conditions can impact our ability to transport students safely, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) allows districts to close school up to six (6) times per year for conditions affecting student safety. As of today, we have canceled school fourteen (14) times due to weather-related conditions. We have now exceeded our allotted number of closings by eight (8) days. Page 5 From the Facilities Desk—School Facility Update Ken Simon, Director of Operations Subzero temperatures and wind chills with driving snow are enough to keep the Cedar Springs School’s maintenance and grounds crew busy on a regular day. Add in ice and a major power outage, and the story gets interesting. What a weekend we had in February! As the Director of Operations, I cannot say thank you enough to my team for the time and effort they put into making sure our schools held up during that time. From Thursday after the power failed, until Sunday night, they worked many, many hours to protect our facilities and to make sure school was ready to open on Monday. It was a group effort that I will never forget. WE ARE READY FOR SPRING! Our team was temporarily expanded to include Northwest Kent Mechanical and Hillard Electric. Temporary building generators and frozen pipe repairs that required a contractor’s attention were completed by these two great partners. They worked side-by-side with Cedar Springs staff to keep our schools from sustaining even more damage. Thank you to both. Over the winter break, the maintenance team installed new LED lighting in the high school gym and wrestling room. This not only brightened the areas but will bring savings to our electric bills. We are continuing with our Michigan State Police safety grant work to be completed by Sept 1, 2019. This includes new exterior doors on Cedar View, district-wide installation of a Blue Point Alert System, new intercoms, and added electronic card reader locks. We have just applied for another Michigan State Police Safety grant to expand on the Blue Point Alert System. SENIOR ALL NIGHT PARTY (SANP) INFORMATION Seniors may turn in their registration papers at any time in the HS office SANP drop box. Remember, the cost per student is $110 if paid before March 15; $125 if paid after March 15 but before Spring Break. All money must be paid before Spring Break, March 28. Please sign up and pay early! As always, visit Cssanp19@gmail.com with any questions! Occasionally, adverse weather conditions or other emergency situations may make it necessary to cancel school, delay the start of school, cancel evening activities or run buses on main/paved roads only. When these situations occur, notice will be communicated to WOOD TV 8, WXMI Fox 17, and WZZM TV 13 through the Grand Rapids Area Information Line (GRAIL) to all subscribing area media. Campus Kids will be open on days that school is closed and/or delayed unless otherwise noted in school closing announcements. Buses will not transport students to Kent Career and Technical Center for 1st session when a school delay or cancellation is issued. Students will be given a weather-related absence at KCTC when we are officially not transporting them. Students who choose to drive personal vehicles to KCTC on school delays or cancellations assume responsibility for their decision. When school evening activities are cancelled, this cancellation also includes all clubs, organizations and extra-curricular events held on campus and scheduled for that evening. Page 6 FIRST GRADE LIBRARY CARD CAMPAIGN by Donna Clark, Cedar Springs Public Library Director First Grade Library Card Drive – The library’s annual campaign to get every first grader his/her own library card or access to a ‘family card’ culminated in the annual “March is Reading Month Celebration” at the Kent Theatre for all of the first graders at Cedar Trails and at Creative Technologies Academy. Every first grader got in to see the NEW “Mary Poppins” movie for free. A library card got them a free bag of popcorn. On hand to emphasize books and reading were local library representatives: From Cedar Springs Public Library – Director Donna Clark and Youth Services Parapro Melissa Dubridge, from Sand Lake Nelson Branch of KDL, Youth Librarian and KDL Outreach Coordinator, Sara Magnuson and Youth Parapro Bethany Metivier, and from Spencer Township Branch of KDL, Youth Parapro Heidi Fifield. The program would not have been a success without the enthusiastic support from Principal Beth Whaley and her wonderful first grade teaching staff, Mrs. Birdsong, Mrs. Brussow, Mrs. Shepard, Mrs. Tiffany, Mrs. Boggiano, Mrs. Doncis, Mrs. Holtrop, Mrs. Upham, Mrs. Saneford, Mrs. Bonsall, Mrs. Sendler, Mrs. Schmidutz, and Mrs. O’Brien. All but a couple of the teachers were able to attend and greet their first graders as they came in. There was a good attendance, in spite of the single digit temperatures. Page 7 Cedar Trails Elementary—The Trail to Success Starts Here Cedar Trails Elementary is full of amazing volunteers and we’d like to say THANK YOU to every one of them: PTO, classroom volunteers, TA’s, mentors, etc.! We are going to highlight two groups in this article: the Cedar Trails PTO and the Resurrection Life Mentors. The Cedar Trails PTO does so many things behind the scenes that people may be unaware of. They put on the Walk-a-thon, run the Book Fairs, count all the Box Tops, organize conference dinners for teachers, organize and run Cookies with Santa, purchase much needed items for the classrooms, and many other things! Most recently, they were able to purchase over $5,000 worth of items for the children to use (art easels, art drying racks, sensory tables, and play kitchen sets). The teachers are so grateful to the PTO for supporting our young learners’ needs. Every item purchased will be able to be used for years to come! Thank you, PTO! Resurrection Life Church in Rockford has a mentoring program that many students have been able to access at school. We currently have over 15 mentors working with students at Cedar Trails. These mentors are available to play games, read, complete work, and have fun doing other activities with students. Most importantly, these mentors are able to build relationships with kids! Thank you, Resurrection Life Mentors for making a difference! Kindergarten classes are having a blast using the parachute in music. It is a great way to show the highs and lows of the music as a class. We can also use it to reinforce the beat in our bodies! Beach Elementary—Learning Today...
