DIRECTORS Mr. Christopher J. Nichter Head Director, 2017 - present Total Years at UC: 2 Christopher J. Nichter is currently the 14th Director of Bands at the University of Cincinnati. Previously, he held for 10 years the position of Assistant Director of Bands at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV. He served the WVU School of Music as the Founder and Director of the Mountaineer Music Academy, Director of the Concert Band, Assistant Director of the 390- member Sudler Award-winning "Pride of West Virginia," the Mountaineer Marching Band and the 70-member Basketball Pep Band, and Assistant Conductor of the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band. In addition, Mr. Nichter instructed Music Arranging for Public School Groups, Fundamentals of Conducting, Conducting and Score Interpretation, and private conducting and band repertory study. Mr. Nichter possesses a Master of Music in Conducting degree with interest in wind band/ensemble literature and a Bachelor of Music in Education degree, Magna Cum Laude, both from West Virginia University. Prior to his present at WVU, Mr. Nichter served as the Graduate Assistant for the WVU Bands and the Director of Bands and Instrumental Music at Fort Hill High School in Cumberland, Maryland. His teaching responsibilities at Fort Hill included an extremely active and successful concert and marching band program as well as jazz, percussion, and string ensembles. Ensembles ranging in size and stature from the WVU Marching Band to small, rural high school bands have performed his arrangements and drill for marching band and he serves as an active adjudicator and clinician. His professional affiliations include the College Band Directors National Association, National Association for Music Education, and Ohio Music Educators Association. He is an honorary Brother of Kappa Kappa Psi (Omicron 2007), Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia (Epsilon Sigma 2013, Province 39 Governor 2016-2017), and Phi Beta Mu (Tau 2016).
Mr. Nicholas E. Angelis Associate Director Total Years at UC: 14 Nicholas E. Angelis received his Bachelor of Music in Education degree at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a Master of Music degree in Percussion Performance from Wright State University. Prior to 2017, Nick served as Assistant Director of the Bearcat Bands. Mr. Angelis has been involved in the drum corps activity since 1979. Throughout 16 seasons, he marched with Satellites, Spartans, Boston Crusaders, Santa Clara Vanguard, Star of Indiana, Brass Theater, and Blue Knights. He was also an original cast member for Blast! from 1999-2003. Nick has taught and written for numerous marching bands and drum corps all around the country including Blue Knights, Crossmen, the Spartans of NH, Kennesaw Mountain H.S., University of Massachusetts -Amherst, Boston Crusaders, Spirit of J.S.U., Troopers, Harrison H.S., Bellbrook H.S., Colts, Blue Stars, Madison Scouts, and Madison Independent Indoor, Milford H.S., Williamstown H. S., and Tascosa H.S. Dr. Krista M. Mulcahy Assistant Director Total Years at UC: 1 Prior to her appointment at the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Krista Mulcahy was an Instructor of Music Education at the Burris Laboratory School at Ball State University where she taught elementary and secondary band courses, jazz band, pep band, music theory, and general music. In addition, Dr. Mulcahy supervised collegiate music education practicum students. Dr. Mulcahy also previously held the position of Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Instrumental Studies at Charleston Southern University in Charleston, South Carolina. For eight years, she taught concert bands, athletic bands, and a variety of instrumental music education courses. A native of Dalton, Georgia, Dr. Mulcahy taught public school for seven years in the Atlanta, Georgia area (Cobb and DeKalb Counties) where she taught middle and high school band, including jazz band and marching band. Dr. Mulcahy holds a BME from Jacksonville State University (AL), an MM in Music Education from Louisiana State University, and a DMA from Boston University.
Mr. Ander R. Peterson Assistant Director Total Years at UC: 5 Ander Peterson is an educator, saxophonist and multi- woodwind instrumentalist. He has a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Performance from the University of Minnesota, Duluth, and a Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Cincinnati College- Conservatory of Music. Mr. Peterson worked as Graduate Assistant for the Bearcat Bands and CCM Jazz Department from 2014 to 2016 and has worked as Assistant Director of the Bearcat Bands since 2016.
ADDITIONAL BIOS & HEADSHOTS A Cincinnati native, LeAnne Anklan holds three degrees from the University of Cincinnati: Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing and International Business, Master of Business Administration, and Master of Arts in Arts Administration. LeAnne's professional background includes experience as senior marketing coordinator for FRCH Design Worldwide, public relations manager for the Contemporary Arts Center, and marketing associate for the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra. Most recently, she held the position of festival manager for the successful inaugural season of the Constella Festival of Music and Fine Arts. LeAnne joined the CCO in 2012 in the position of artistic and orchestra operations manager and was promoted to the position of general manager in 2015. In her free time, LeAnne volunteers as a founding board member of the Cincinnati Contemporary Jazz Orchestra and as the president of The University of Cincinnati Band Alumni Association. She plays flute and piccolo in the UC Community and Alumni Bands. Mike Bohn was named the director of athletics at the University of Cincinnati on Feb. 6, 2014 Bohn's career spans thirty-plus years and includes record-setting achievements at multiple institutions. His time in the Queen City has been impactful on and off the field. Bohn oversaw the opening of the $86-million Nippert Stadium Renovation & Expansion project, is spearheading an $87-million fundraising campaign to renovate Fifth Third Arena and has positioned UC as one of the top schools in the American Athletic Conference under his ‘Class of the League’ initiative. Bohn has also implemented facility improvements at Gettler Stadium, Marge Schott Stadium and the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center. He has helped establish a long-term partnership with Under Armour to serve as UC’s official apparel provider, was instrumental in bringing USL soccer club FC Cincinnati to its current home in Nippert Stadium, negotiated off-site playing agreements for the men’s basketball team at Northern Kentucky’s BB&T Arena and the women’s basketball and volleyball squads at St. Ursula Academy’s Gymnasium and Convocation Center during the 2017-18 season and has expanded a beneficial relationship with longtime UC partner Pepsi, who owns pouring rights in UC’s athletics venues. Bohn received a bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas, where he was recruited as a quarterback and also played baseball, and a master's degree in sports administration from Ohio University.
Shaun Day was the Assistant Band Director at Turpin High School in the Forest Hills School District from 2013-2018. During this time, Shaun’s duties included leading beginning band in elementary schools as well as directing Turpin High School’s Concert Band and Jazz Studies program. Before his position at Forest Hills, Shaun was a staff member at the Winton Woods City School District where he worked in the Intermediate Building assisting the 5th and 6th grades in all subject areas. Shaun has been an active member of the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) by participating in the Leadership Academy in 2014, becoming a Co-Chair of Properties for the 2016 OMEA Professional Development Conference, and most recently held the position of District 14 Secretary and Treasurer. In 2016, Shaun also founded the annual Forest Hills Jazz Festival in Anderson Township. In his spare time, Shaun continues to freelance as a trumpet performer in Cincinnati. A native to Cincinnati, Shaun Day grew up in Colerain and is a 2012 graduate of the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, where he received a Bachelor of Music in Music Education with a concentration in trumpet. Nick DelleCave is a past UC Band Drum Major (2002-2007), Band Staff (2008-2014) member, and Alumni Band President (2010-2014). He currently organizes and manages the Drum Major Society as Executive Director ('07-Present) a non-profit organization that supports community development in leadership and marching conducting technique. He graduated UC with a Bachelor's of Business Administration in Marketing and Management. Professionally, he manages in the technology sector with teams around the world. Calvin Fackrell has been involved in the marching arts since 2001 and has been performing with and teaching groups around the country ever since. Calvin performed with several west coast drum corps including the Oregon Crusaders, Seattle Cascades, and the Blue Devils from 2008-2010. In his time there, Calvin helped the Blue Devils win two world championships. Following Calvin’s age out in 2010, he taught the Troopers Drum & Bugle Corps in 2011 and 2012. In 2013, Calvin came back to the northwest to teach the Cascades Drum Corps in the role of visual supervisor for the past five seasons. His latest venture in drum corps is with Cincinnati Tradition. Calvin is excited to be writing and teaching there for a second season, as he helps usher in their first season in open class for DCA.
Calvin’s experience with high school marching bands also started in the northwest. Most notably, Calvin taught class champions Evergreen and Hockinson High Schools, as well as leading the visual team at Kamiak High School for several years. Currently, Calvin works with Lakota East High School, a BOA bronze medalist at the 2017 Dayton Regional, and finalist at the BOA Indianapolis Regional. During the winter, Calvin has worked with multiple indoor percussion ensembles and winterguards. Currently, he is in his third season as visual director for Central Crossing High School, a consistent scholastic open finalist in WGI, and his fourth season as visual director for Cap City Percussion, who is coming off of their first time as a finalist in the independent world class at WGI finals. As an active designer, Calvin’s drill writing is in demand nationally throughout schools and independent groups in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, New Hampshire, and Ohio. Aaron Farris is a native of Richmond Ky and has been apart of the marching arts for nearly 9 years. He marched 3 years with the Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps, and 2 seasons with Rhythm X. Aaron is currently going into his 7th year as the Caption Head at Garrard County High School in Lancaster Kentucky. Aaron has also spent 4 years as a battery technician (focusing on bass drums) with the Sacramento Mandarins Drum & Bugle Corps. Originally from San Diego, Thomas Gamboa earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education and Music Performance in bassoon from UCLA. He also earned a Masters of Music degree in Conducting from Northwestern University, where he studied with Mallory Thompson. Additional conducting studies include work with Tom Lee, Donald Neuen, Victor Yampolsky, Craig Kirchhoff, Kenneth Kiesler, Neal Stulberg, Jerry Junkin, David Effron, David Loebel, Donald Hunsberger, Michael Votta, Kevin Sedatole, Gary Hill and Mark Davis Scatterday. He completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting from the University of Michigan in 2018 where he studied with Michael Haithcock. An accomplished conductor, Gamboa previously held the rank of Captain and served active duty as Conductor and Commander of the United States Air Force Band at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia. He later served as Associate Conductor and Flight Commander of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Bandat Ramstein Air Base, Germany. He earned his commission from Officer Training School, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama in February 2011. Gamboa traveled with the Band of the Air Force Reserve on numerous national and international tours including Spain, Germany, Turkey, Qatar and Kuwait. He
also helped plan, execute and edit the band’s final television broadcast Holiday Notes from Home 2011, which featured country music group Little Big Town and singer/ songwriter Lee Ann Womack as guest artists. The Band of the Air Force Reserve celebrated a historic second nomination for an Emmy Award in Entertainment Programming for this broadcast, which was viewed by 1.1 million people in 174 countries. A seasoned educator, Gamboa taught and served as the Instrumental Music Director and Music Department Chair at West Adams Preparatory High School in the Pico- Union neighborhood of Central Los Angeles. During his tenure, he founded and conducted the high school’s marching band, wind ensemble, chamber orchestra and symphonic orchestra. He was also a conducting and chamber music instructor for the National High School Music Institute, where he served as Assistant Conductor for the Wind Ensemble. Additionally, Gamboa taught drum major camps with the United Spirit Association during the summer for more than 15 years. In addition to teaching, he designed the conducting curriculum and trained instructors throughout his time with the drum major camps. Heather Graham has been involved in the marching arts since age three, beginning with successful careers in baton twirling and rhythmic gymnastics and joining color guard at age 12. While performing and instructing in the color guard field, she obtained her Bachelors Degree in Communication from the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee, with a minor in Biology. Heather performed in DCI in 2010 with the Phantom Regiment and in 2011 and 2012 with Carolina Crown. She marched with New Berlin Eisenhower, Velocity WG, and just completed her fifth season with the Pride of Cincinnati WG. She has proudly lent her skills as a Weapons Instructor and Choreographer for Miamisburg HS for the past five years, and as the Director of Color Guard at University of Cincinnati. She has instructed or provided choreography for several programs including Carolina Crown, Boston Crusaders, Shadow Drum & Bugle Corps, Eisenhower HS, Whitnall HS, Franklin HS, West DePere HS, Sycamore HS, Northmont HS, Westerville HS, and Beechwood HS. Heather travels around the country helping instruct at clinics that offer fundraisers for many organizations.
As Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, Dr. Juan Guardia serves as a resource to students, parents, faculty, and administrators. The programs and services within the Division of Student Affairs focus around issues impacting students’ lives, including Resident Education and Development, Student Conduct and Community Standards, and the Bearcat Bands. All of these programs enhance students’ holistic development academically, socially, and personally. The Dean of Students also provides a timely and appropriate response to various forms of crisis, conflict, and risk to student retention. Some of these services include: · CARE (Crisis, Assessment, Referral, Evaluation) Team · Tuition Refund Application (TRA) · Student Related Critical Incidents Response Policy Prior to coming to UC, Guardia spent three years working as the Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs at Northeastern Illinois University, a public university in Chicago with around 10,000 students. There, he oversaw a new Student Family Programs office, which dealt with things related to orientation. Guardia also worked with colleagues to run a Diversity and Culture Center at Northern Illinois University that provided resources for minority students of all colors, genders and sexual orientations. Before Northern Illinois University, Guardia worked as Director of Multicultural Affairs at Florida State University where he helped curate multicultural programs for education, inclusion, advocacy and social justice on a campus of over 43,000 students. This is Joseph Herzog's 3rd year on the staff of the UC Bearcat Bands. Growing up in Arizona, his decade of experience in the marching arts started with the Chandler High “Wolfpack” Marching Band, boasting a Fiesta Bowl Competition appearance in 2008. Then, during Joe's four years marching trumpet in the University of Cincinnati Bearcat Bands, he was honored to be selected for the soprano line of the 2014 Madison Scouts. That summer he had the privilege of learning from educators like Brad Green, Blake Daughtrey, Eddie Falcon, Sean Conway and many others. Joe's teaching style melds the clarity and precision of drum corps with a down-to-earth, accessible approach to college marching band instruction.
Kevin Holzman earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting at the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with Music Director of the Eastman Wind Ensemble, Dr. Mark Scatterday. As the Frederick Fennell Conducting Fellow and 2016 recipient of the prestigious Walter Hagen Prize for Excellence in Conducting, Holzman served as Associate Conductor of the world-renowned Eastman Wind Ensemble and Eastman Wind Orchestra. He regularly appeared as a conductor for OSSIA New Music, including the world premieres of Jo Kondo’s Variations (Triskelion) and Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez’s Welcome Jo! He also studied with Professor Neil Varon, Director of Eastman Orchestras. Holzman became the founding Music Director and conductor of the Hobart and William Smith Colleges Wind Ensemble in fall 2016. He successfully recruited and led the ensemble’s inaugural year, and it is now the college’s largest instrumental ensemble. While pursuing his MM in conducting at the University of Arizona (UA), Holzman had the opportunity to teach and conduct as Interim Principal Conductor for the Wind Symphony at UA’s Fred Fox School of Music during the director’s extended absence from 2012 to 2014. He also served as the Director and Coordinator of the UA Symphonic Band and High School Honor Band, where he collaborated with local and regional music teachers to provide the experience of college-level ensemble training to talented young musicians. In his seven years of teaching university-level instrumental conducting, Holzman has designed innovative curriculum and course materials for beginning and intermediate conducting courses as part of undergraduate music performance and education curricula. Holzman is a passionate advocate for access to music in all schools. He is an honorary member of Phi Mu Alpha, Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi music fraternities. Eric Kraft has been involved in the pageantry arts since 1990. He was a six-year member of the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps and has been an instructor for Carolina Crown, The Madison Scouts, The Crossmen, The Troopers, Capital Regiment, Madison Independent Indoor PIA, Tates Creek Indoor Ensemble, and other various indoor programs. Eric earned his Bachelors of Music Education from Northern Kentucky University and has taught, arranged, and consulted with many of the bands in the Northern Kentucky / Cincinnati area, as well as with programs in Ohio, Michigan, Texas, and Kentucky. He has also been a clinician for Carolina Crown Clinics, YEA - Music is Cool, TriState Marching Arts, and is proud to be part of the VicFirth Education Team. Eric earned his MBA from the University of Cincinnati in 2017.
John Leonard is currently the Interim Director of the Western Michigan University “Bronco” Marching Band. Before coming to WMU, Leonard studied at University of Massachusetts at Amherst where in 2002 he earned a bachelor’s of music in music education before going back to get a masters of music in jazz composition and arranging which he earned in 2013. He also served as the athletic band director at Northeastern University. His Master of Music in Conducting degree, earned in 2018, is from Western Michigan University. The University of Kansas allowed him to defer his entry into the doctoral conducting program until after he finishes his time as WMU’s interim marching band director. Samantha Lojewski (née Fedorowicz) was most recently an elementary and middle school music teacher and choir director at Rivesville Schools in Marion County, West Virginia. She originally hails from the small town of Broadway, Virginia near Harrisonburg. Sami earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from West Virginia University and for the past 5 years has been an active member of the percussion staff for the West Virginia University Marching Band. Additional experience includes instructing indoor percussion, high school marching bands, and private music lessons. Her principal instrument is clarinet with a strong secondary skill on marching crash cymbals. She is married to Brandon Lojewski, a banker and percussionist who has also served on the WVU Marching Band staff for several years and was a member of Matrix Performing Arts in 2010. Her last name is pronounced “low-jess-kee.” Brian Maynard graduated high school in 1980 from Coventry Senior High School in Akron, OH. He attended the University of Akron, entered the printing industry, and became a Journeyman Lithographer; he has worked in the printing industry for 35 years. Currently, he is employed at The Hennegan Company in Florence, KY, the most awarded printing company in the country, and is married to Robin Roberts-Maynard, who works for Fifth Third Bank as an Assistant Vice-President and Program Manager. Their son, Kyle Maynard, marched in the Bearcat Band from 2005 to 2008 and earned his Music Education degree from NKU; he currently works for Veritiv as a Customer Service Rep. Brian has worked with the UC Bearcat Marching Band since 2006 helping with equipment and logistics.
Debra S. Merchant, JD, Vice President for Student Affairs, is responsible for the development and implementation of university-wide programs designed to support the student experience outside of the classroom. As a member of the Provost’s senior leadership team, Merchant provides leadership toward student residential life, engagement, leadership, identity development, advocacy and multicultural programming. As the Senior Student Affairs Officer, Merchant is a member of the University Executive Committee, the Executive Oversight Committee for University Compliance, and the Athletics Advisory Committee. Merchant offers a unique perspective given her breadth of experience that includes UC’s number one priority – students. In her role, she collaborates with colleagues across the campus while continuing to advance the “students-first” philosophy. Before coming to UC in 1998, Merchant held various professional positions providing advocacy for students with disabilities, organizational development and strategic planning. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Learning and Behavior Disorders from Morehead State University and the University of Kentucky, respectively. She is also a graduate of the University of Kentucky, College of Law. Prior to attending law school, Merchant was a special education teacher in a public elementary school. Tyler Peters started his percussion career at Kings Local School District where he was first taught by Mike Maegly. Tyler marched at Kings High School from 2007 – 2011. He also took private lessons with James Sparling while there. Tyler later marched at the University of Cincinnati, under Nick Angelis, from 2012 – 2015. He has also marched with Tates Creek Indoor (2016). He has taught at Deer Park HS, Turpin HS, Kings HS, and the University of Cincinnati Bearcat Bands. Tyler holds a B.F.A. in Electronic Media from the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, where he focused on audio engineering, MIDI music production, and film scoring.
Ann M. Porter taught public school instrumental music at various levels in Kentucky and also served previously on the faculty at California State University at Hayward as associate director of bands and a professor in the Music Education Division. Her former teachers include Craig Kirchoff, Richard Suddendorf, James Croft, Clifford Madsen, and Patrick Dunnigan. She has been published in Journal of Research in Music Education, Instrumentalist, Music Educators Journal, Triad and other professional journals. During her time in California, she also served as the higher education representative for the California Music Educators Bay Section Association. In Ohio, she was a Past President of OMEA District 14. Porter is active as a guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator with school bands and with regional, district, and state honor bands. She has given conference presentations at national and state levels and has served on the editorial board for Contributions. Furthermore, she is the founder of the Cincinnati Junior Youth Wind Ensemble and is the current conductor of the high school-level Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble. Larry Rebillot posesses more than 40 years of experience as a designer, teacher & performer in the arts. A graduate of Morehead State University in Kentucky with BA in Communications as well as Graduate Studies in Education, Larry is a former Drama and Dance teacher in the Boone County Schools in KY, company member of the Canton Ballet and Regional Theater, as well as having spent 27 years on the Faculty and Color Guard Coordinator at the Music for All/Bands of America Summer Symposium, America’s premier band camp. Larry is an active adjudicator, consultant, freelance choreographer and is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity, National Dance Education Organization, Tri State Judges Association, and Bluecoat Alumni and Bridgemen Alumni Associations. Larry is honored to be a six-year member of the Board of Directors of the DCI World Champion Bluecoats. Presently a freelance color guard choreographer, visual consultant and judge, he has inspired hundreds of high school, college and independent pageantry groups throughout the US, Canada, and Australia during his career including the Bluecoats, Bridgemen, Pride of Cincinnati, University of Cincinnati “Bearcat” Band, University of Nebraska “Cornhusker” Band, Western Carolina University “Pride of the Mountains” Band, and the five-time WAMSB World Champion, Calgary Stampede Showband.
Josh Riedy began pursuing music around the age of 9 by taking private drum lessons and staying actively involved in music programs from middle school on. He began his marching education at Centerville High School under the direction of Tim Fairbanks with a primary focus on snare drum. Josh went on to obtain his BM in Jazz Percussion at the College- Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. While in college, he continued his marching career in the UC Bandand the 2011 Madison Scouts, both under the direction of Nick Angelis. Recently, Josh has been teaching high school marching band in the Columbus area and is currently an instructor at UC, as well as a section leader of the all-age senior drum corps, Cincinnati Tradition. You might have seen him playing quads in 2016’s Pepsi commercial promoting Andy Dalton and the Cincinnati Bengals! Zach Schlicher began his drum corps career with The Cadets in 2001. Upon aging out in 2004, he began teaching the snare line at the Madison Scouts. After two seasons with the Scouts, he moved to be on faculty of Carolina Crown for the next ten years. Away from the drum corps field, Zach works with several scholastic and independent programs within BOA and WGI. Over the last twelve years, he has developed a unique set of skills which allow him to take on multiple responsibilities and roles with any ensemble. Along with his design/instruction commitments, Zach occasionally performs on cast with Aerial Experience Productions and has performed with Blue Devils Entertainment. He has also been featured on VicFirth.com in the video lesson series "Hybrid Rudiments." Zach is endorsed by Vic Firth and Evans Drumheads. Zach studied percussion at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Presently, he resides in Indianapolis, IN, but travels to work with multiple programs within North America. Mike Sexton is a 52-year old father of two girls (24 & 18) and one boy (22). Both of his girls are flute/piccolo players. His oldest (Megan) was a 3-year member of the UC Band and his youngest, a senior at Oak Hills High School, has aspirations of playing in the UC Band as well. He has previously helped as a volunteer with the UC Band for 4 years and for the past 8 years, he has served many roles, including managing the equipment transportation for the high school band. He’s a lifelong Bearcat lover, having grown up in Clifton through elementary and high school. Although he’s never played an instrument in his life, he’s found a tremendous respect for band and all the hard work and dedication that goes into being a band member. He looks forward to the upcoming Band Season and is proud to be part of such a wonderful program as the UC Bands. TUCBIDG!
Randy Smith is a 1972 graduate of Cincinnati’s Anderson High School and holds multiple degrees from the University of Cincinnati where he was honored as Mr. Bearcat (Outstanding Senior) in 1977. Following a 36-year career at Proctor & Gamble, Mr. Smith continues to be active in local and state government and with the Bearcat Bands. He’s served as “The Voice” of the band since 2001 and on the Board of Governors of the UC Band Alumni Association, having founded this organization in 1979. He continues to serve his alma mater as a Trustee of the University of Cincinnati Foundation and as a member of this organization’s Executive Committee. He presently serves as the President of the Ohio School Boards Association. Tim Snyder has previously worked with Cincinnati Tradition as a Consultant, Brass Caption Head for the Oregon Crusaders and the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps, and Assistant Director for the Eastern High School Marching Band of Louisville, KY. His experience includes tenures on the Brass Staff for Carolina Crown and the Madison Scouts. Tim and his wife Robin reside in Louisville, KY with their children, where they run Box5Media, their company dedicated to capturing media for the Marching Arts. Brian Soules has over 25 years of experience in the pageantry arts. He designs, judges and consults for high school and college marching bands throughout the region and nation. He is a professional educator currently serving as a social studies teacher at Boone County High School (KY); with this perspective in mind, he instructs marching ensembles from an educator’s perspective. Brian is a long-time member of the visual staff for Carolina Crown, one of the top drum and bugle corps in the world and one that is consistently recognized for its distinguished and trend-setting musical and visual presentations.
Chris Southard is the owner of CDS Media Solutions providing high quality scanning and photo organizing services to clients in the Cincinnati area. Specifically, as a former college marching band trumpet player and rank leader, Chris has a passion for helping others preserve their marching band memories. He is currently the Media Coordinator for the West Virginia University Marching Band where he manages their web site and serves as the photographer/videographer. Chris enjoys working with the Bearcat Bands by preserving some of the best experiences of the members’ college lives. Andrew Van Matre graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 2016. He participated in the Bearcat Bands throughout his time at UC, including the marching, pep, concert, jazz, and Dixieland bands, splitting his time between horn, saxophone, and tuba. He was the tuba section leader for 3 years, winning two Leadership Awards and the Roy A. Colclaser Outstanding Musician Award. Andrew is an alumni member of both Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma, and is now a network operations center technician at Procter & Gamble. Samantha Welch attended UC from 2009-2015 in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences where she studied Mechanical Engineering Technology. She played flute and piccolo in the UC Bands from 2009-2014 and served as flute section leader from 2012-2014. During her time in the UC Band, she was also active in the Theta Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma, where she served as Treasurer, Vice President of Membership, and President. Since her time at UC, she has made Cincinnati her home where she lives with her fiancée and four dogs while working as a Manufacturing Engineer at a local manufacturing company, General Tool Company.
