RECYCLING DONE RIGHT Published for the residents of Clark County | Fall 2014 a garbage and recycling refresher
REDUCE RUBBISH Join WasteBusters The typical household in Clark County produces about 50 pounds of waste each week. How much can your family do to reduce your household’s footprint? Meet the Hoyt Family, winners of Clark County’s WasteBusters challenge of 2014! Living on a small farm outside Battle Ground, Garrett, Alyssa and their five children were already passionate about sustainability, voluntary simplicity and healthy living. The WasteBusters program provided instructions and challenges that allowed them to get to the next level of thoughtful consumption and waste reduction. How did they do? The Hoyt’s slashed their waste by more than 60 percent, from an already impressive 24.25 pounds per week at the start of the competition to 9.6 pounds six weeks later. How does it work? Over the course of six weeks participating families receive weekly instructions on different ways to reduce, reuse, compost and recycle their Hoyt Family waste. Weekly weigh-ins tally garbage and recycling weight for each family and WasteBuster Champions then, after six weeks, the household with the biggest average reduction in waste volume will be awarded with a prize and the title of “Top WasteBuster!” (360) 397-2121 ext. 4939 “Knowing I would be doing an inventory of everything that went in our Sally.Fisher@clark.wa.gov trash can, I evaluated the items I bought with the end waste in mind.” -Alyssa Hoyt Become a Green Business Join a growing number of businesses on the path to more sustainable operations. A supporter of the people and places in Clark County for over 70 years, Corwin Beverage Company is a founding member of the Clark County Green Business Program. The program provides web-based assessments, resources and assistance to businesses seeking a structured approach to implementing green initiatives and measuring results. Participating businesses demonstrate that they can minimize their impact on the local environment in six key areas: • Stormwater • Energy • Toxics • Community • Waste and Recycling • Water and Wastewater Clark County partners with Waste Connections, Clark Public Utilities and the City of Vancouver to provide support and Corwin Beverage Company’s Green Team technical assistance. “With the trash audit we learned what we were sending to the landfill. We were able to get assistance from the program, and find a place to either recycle or reuse many of these items. Now we recycle over 15 different materials.” clarkgreenbiz.com -Shaun Nelson on Twitter: @ClarkGreenBiz Inventory and Purchasing Manager at Corwin Beverage Company

Empower Up recycled 148 tons of electronic waste in 2013 and currently accepts clean, dry, white #6 block foam from Clark County residents. The organization is always looking for volunteers interested in learning how to evaluate and process electronic products.
