GENERAL INFORMATION CURRICULUM: The Summer Session curriculum is designed to prepare students for a junior high and high school curriculum, as well as to provide opportunities for fun and enrichment. DURATION: Summer Session classes will run June 21 and July 16 (with the exception of Geometry). Classes will meet Monday through Friday. We will take a four-day weekend for the Fourth of July holiday. There will be no school on July 2nd and 5th. REGISTRATION: To enroll, fill out the registration form and return it with a check made out to Ramona Convent Secondary School. You may also download the registration from our website, ramonaconvent.org, under Learning: Summer Session, and email the form to hszymanski@ramonaconvent.org. The earlier registration is received, the more likely it is that you will receive classes at the times you request. CANCELLATION OF CLASSES: Classes offered are subj ect to enrollment. We reserve the right to cancel classes for which there are fewer than 10 applicants. Under-enrolled classes will be canceled by June 1st. Refund Policy: Tuition is refundable only if a class is canceled by Ramona. ATTENDANCE: Regular aAendance in Summer School is extremely important since the class time is so limited. ♦ Please call 626-282-4151 before 9:00 A.M. to report an absence. ♦ The day a student returns from an absence, she/he must bring a note to the front office explaining the absence. ♦ Students should discuss absences and make up work with their teachers. ♦ If a student is in a class that earns academic credit, she/he cannot receive credit in that class if she/he misses more than two days of the class. If a student needs to leave school early, she/he should bring a note to the office before going to class.
CLASS SCHEDULES: Class schedules will be mailed to all stu- dents no later than one week before summer session begins. CONDUCT: 1. Students are expected to be on time for class and ready to begin work promptly. 2. Students are expected to behave appropriately during class and stay on task. 3. Students may not eat in the classrooms. 4. Gum chewing is not permiAed. 5. Students may not leave campus between classes. The English Courtyard is open for students between classes. Students who are waiting for their next class or who are waiting to be picked up must wait in this area. 6. Students cannot wait on campus before 7:30 a.m. 7. Cell phones and other electronic devices should be turned off unless required by the teacher for educational purposes. DRESS CODE: Ladies: Students may wear dresses, skirts, blouses, pants, jeans, and shorts. Students may not wear shorts that are shorter than the end of their finger- tips when their arms are at their sides. They may not wear cut-offs, halter or backless dresses, tank tops, midriff ensembles, tops that are shorter than the top of her pants/shorts, pajama tops or boAoms, or micro mini-skirts. Excessive makeup and earrings are inappropriate; hair should be neatly groomed and be a natural color. Gentlemen: Shorts, jeans, pants, t-shirts are ok as long as they are free of logos/ references to violence, sex, drugs, or alcohol. Oversized clothing and hats are not permiAed. No tank tops or muscle shirts. Hair should be neatly groomed and be a natural color. All: All clothes should be clean, free of holes, and unfrayed. Any student who, in the judgment of the summer school director, is not abiding by the above policies may be asked to leave summer school permanently. Any student who drops out of summer school voluntarily or involuntarily will not receive a refund.
CLASSES OPEN TO GIRLS AND BOYS, Grades 5 - 12 BASKETBALL CAMP Basketball camp will be held on four Saturdays: June 26, July 10, July 17, July 24 Co-ed grades 5-8 will meet from 9:00—10:45 am Girls entering grades 9 and 10 will meet 11:00—12:45 pm Cost: $150 Join our very own Coach TC as we get back to campus and practice our basketball skills! Campers will be taught the fundamental skills of: ball handling, dribbling, passing, shooting, and defense in small groups, with plenty of opportunity for repetition. Groups will be rotated to various stations to practice skills. This practice combined with the opportunity to play challenging and fun games which will re-enforce skills and concepts. Come make friends and have fun! AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE We are excited to bring ASL to our Ramona community with the addition of our new teacher, Ms. Lee. Students will learn the most basic signs of alphabet fingerspelling, vocabulary associated with categories such as family signs, WH-Questions, directions, and affirmations. Students will learn grammar syntax, facial expressions, and sentence structure. Students will also discuss Deaf culture and the history of American Sign Language while understanding the differences between the hearing world, the deaf world, and the challenges both worlds overcome to unite as one. Grades: 6 - 12 Section: B $250
ALGEBRA I HONORS This course is intended for a student who has completed an Algebra course in 8th grade but has not been placed into Geometry. Some of the concepts covered are integers, rational numbers, algebraic equations and functions, inequalities, factoring, and polynomials. Graphing will also be an important component and concept covered. Eligibility for this course will be determined by entrance exam scores, previous grades in math, and the score on the Algebra Proficiency Exam. Students who earn at least an 84% in this class may take Geometry Honors in the ninth grade. Students who earn 83% or lower may take regular Geometry in the ninth grade. Students who earn a ʺC-ʺ or below must take Algebra I in the ninth grade. Grade: 9 Section: 9:25 - 11:45 (B and C blocks) 5 units Textbook: free downloadable OpenStax text will be provided $375 ALGEBRA PREP This Algebra Prep course is designed to strengthen and reinforce the skills students need to succeed in Algebra and all higher level math courses. Students will use the vocabulary of math while performing operations with real numbers, fractions, and decimals. Students will concentrate on order of operations, negative numbers, ratios, exponential expressions, inequalities, algebraic equations, and word problems. PRE-ALGEBRA This class covers basic principles and concepts of arithmetic as well as beginning Algebra. Students will gain the confidence, knowledge, and computational accuracy they need to succeed in Algebra and beyond! Many of the same topics found in our Algebra Prep class are covered, but at a level and pace appropriate to 5th and 6th graders. Grades: 5 - 6 Section: A $250 STEPS FOR SUCCESS If you are looking to acquire more vigorous study habits, then this class is for you. Every week you will obtain learning strategies that will allow you to be a more confident student. Students will learn how to be more motivated and set realistic goals. This class is taught by our Director of Guidance and College Counseling, Mr. Chavarría, who is at the forefront of what students need as they begin a new school year with success. Here is a preview of what students will receive. Week 1 = Organization (Includes a Binder set up) Week 2 = Time Management & Improving Reviewing Techniques Week 3 = Reading Comprehension, Note Taking Strategies, Test Taking Strategies Week 4 = Improving Motivation, SeAing Goals, & College 101 This class is a must! FORWARD TOGETHER English Skills for Incoming Freshmen The past year has brought a wide range of challenges and obstacles, but with a fresh start at Ramona on the horizon, we want incoming students to know we are in it together. This course will serve as preparation for all of the necessary skills that will prepare a range of students for writing and thinking at Ramona. We will read stories and articles that complement our One Book, One Ramona schoolwide summer reading, and we will conduct both creative and critical writing in response. The course is designed to bring every student – no maAer what her experience was this past year – on board and prepared for the academic journey ahead. Grade: 9 Section: A or D $250 A PLEASANT RESPITE English Skills for Middle School With virtual instruction, different schedules, and difficulty connecting with peers, prioritizing English skills in middle school has been tough. In this class, we will not only work to boost our strong, core English skills, but we will make English fun again! We will read Jerry Spinelli’s fantastic novel Stargirl, we will write our own creative stories, and we will do it all while rebuild- ing the foundation of the most important skills middle school students need to thrive in English. INTRODUCTION TO CODING Begin the journey into the world of computer science! Students will learn the fundamentals, basic concepts and background knowledge to tackle coding. This introductory course will empower students to develop high-end skills such as computational thinking, creativity, communication and problem solving. Most of all, coding is fun! Included in the curriculum are lessons in Internet Safety and Digital Citizenship. Students will develop an understanding of code through play and experimentation. This may be the first step to building websites, apps, games and more! Grades: 5 - 10 Section: A $250 COMPUTER SCIENCE DISCOVERIES Computer Science Discoveries is an introductory computer science course for 6 - 10th grade students. Mapped to CTSA standards, the course takes a wide lens on computer science by covering topics such as problem solving, programming, physical computing, user centered design, and data, while inspiring students as they build their own websites, apps, animations, games, and physical computing systems. We recommend students have prior knowledge of block coding before taking this class. Grades: 6 - 10 Section: C $250
DANCE Dance with Frit and Frat Fuller, the Co-Founders and Artistic Directors of the Los Angeles based KIN Dance Company. Journey with us through dance. Open to all girls and boys! Dance I : Kindergarten—2nd graders Creative Expression Through Dance If you love to dance to the beat of your own drum then this class is for you. Through dance and movement you’ll tap into your creative energies and bring to life the artistic dancer in you. Surprise your family and friends with your imaginative dance moves at our Dance Recital on Thursday, July 15th. Dance III : Grades 6 and up for Intro & Beginning Dancers (younger students may place in this class after audition) Exploring the Joy of Dance Explore and enjoy the elements of Ballet, Contemporary and Hip-Hop. This class will focus on technique and performance with emphasis on placement, movement, and body awareness. SAT PREP for MATH Raise your math scores! Be confident! Be prepared! Join us for a prep class that will prepare you for your standardized tests. Learn how to recognize which mathematical operation to use, how to use the process of elimination to narrow down your answer choices, and how to focus your studying. VISUAL ARTS I Satisfies graduation requirement, UC approved, 5 units This 5-unit course is designed to give students the necessary technical and perceptual tools to increase their interest in art and give them confidence to pursue higher visual art challenges. Students learn through various projects how to identify art movements and styles. Through individual and group critiques, students also develop their ability to evaluate artwork and increase their ability to communicate ideas in a forum where a dialogue based on aesthetics is respected and encouraged. Students will be introduced to a variety of media and techniques in order to develop their aesthetic sensibilities. Students will also develop a strong personal portfolio compris- ing their own body of artwork throughout the year. VISUAL ARTS ENRICHMENT This introduction and exploration of visual arts includes drawing, printing and mixed media. Students will complete a variety of exercises using different media and explore different elements of art. Some projects will be make and take home; others will take several days to complete. Since projects change every summer, students may take this course more than once. A small portfolio of work will be created over the summer. All are invited to join us at our Art Showcase on the last day of class. Grades: 5 - 9 Section: B & C $250 plus $25 Materials Fee ART SHOWCASE Student artwork will be on display Friday, July 16 DESIGN IN A DIGITAL WORLD Develop your skills in digital photography! Master design tools such as Adobe PhotoShop and InDesign. Students will explore digital elements of the arts such as theory, design, and the use of technology in artistic expression. Students will learn how to be journalists by reporting, writing headlines and captions, editing, and learning the art of typography. Students will work collaboratively in Ramona’s Digital Multimedia Design lab to create a mass publication that will be distributed to our entire summer school community! Grades: 5 - 10 Section: D $250
CULINARY ARTS AND BAKING In this course young chefs will be introduced to the basic techniques of preparing both sweet and savory dishes. Students will learn French culinary and baking terms and practices along with kitchen safety and sanitation. Week 1: We will start with safety and sanitation. Students will prepare sauces, meat dishes, appetizers, salads and more. Week 2: Cuisine from around the world. Students will learn a variety of foods from Europe, Latin America, The Caribbean, Asia, the Mediterranean and other places. Week 3: Basic baking techniques, cookies, cakes, cream puffs, fruit tarts pies and more. Week 4: Decorating techniques for your cakes, pies, and other pastries. Learn the tricks and techniques that will make your creations stand out. Learn about how to create new flavors and designs. Each student should be mature enough to follow safety procedures. A knowledge of basic math (fractions) is important. If a student has food allergies (such as wheat, sugar, nuts, dairy, etc.), please alert the instructor on the first day of class by sending a note with your student. We will make every reasonable effort to accommodate specific dietary needs. FLORAL AND LANDSCAPE DESIGN Beautify the world around you! Join Ramona’s Floral Design class. This course will teach you to design and beautify the world around you. Students will learn how to design floral arrangements using different techniques which include everything from sophisticated European designs to exquisitely simple Japanese Ikebana and Bonsai techniques. The landscaping design portion of this class will include students designing their own area here on the Ramona Convent campus. Students will design, plan, and implement their chosen area. Each student should be able to handle gardening and floriculture tools. They should also be able to follow basic safety instructions. Grades: 5 - 12 Section: D $250 plus $50 Materials Fee
GEOMETRY Satisfies graduation requirement, UC approved, 10 units (full year) This course covers basic geometric concepts and relationships. An emphasis is placed on the use of deductive reasoning and the development of proofs, especially as they relate to the study of congruent polygons, parallel lines and circles. Other topics covered are ratio, proportion, similarity, inequalities and right triangles. *Ramona students require department approval to enroll in this course. Dates: June 21 - July 23 (5 weeks) Time: 8:30 - 1:00 Grades: 9 - 11 Section: 8:30 - 1:00 Required: Laptop or tablet, text (TBD), calculator $500 10 units TRIGONOMETRY This enrichment course is designed to prepare students for success in PreCalculus. A rigorous study of all topics in trigonometry is covered, including right triangle geometry, radian and degree measures, the unit circle, graphs of trigonometric functions, inverse trigonometric functions, properties of trigonometric functions, solving trigonometric equations, and applications of trigonometric functions. Grades: 10 - 12 Section: 8:15—10:25 Text: Algebra 2 $375 3 units
DBQ WRITING WORKSHOP Are you planning to take an Advanced Placement History course? Do you want to become a be"er writer? Writing is a key part of the AP History exams. The Document Based Question, or DBQ, may be the hardest part of the exam. We will identify what a DBQ is, identify the components of the DBQ, and build on your general writing skills to ensure you earn top marks. DBQ’s require analysis of primary source documents, charts, graphs, and pictures. You will also examine an author’s point of view, detect personal biases, tone, and audience and determine the relevance of all that to the argument. This course is open to any student looking to get ahead. You do not need to be currently enrolled in an AP History course to take this course. AP European History and AP US History use the same rubric for the DBQ! Grades: 10 - 12 Section: B $250 BIOLOGY This is a 5 unit course designed for students that need to repeat either semester 1 or 2 of biology. It will be an accelerated course that reintroduces students to the basic fundamentals of biology, the study of life. Students will learn biological concepts, proper lab techniques, and science procedures through a variety of inquiry labs, hands-on activities, mini lectures, group work, quizzes, tests, Grade: 10 - 12 Section: 9:30 - 12:30 $500 5 units
ARCHERY Archery Champs is dedicated to passing on the values of determination, hard work and personal growth. This program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn Archery in a safe environment. Learn and practice a new Olympic Archery skill each day and then finish the day off with an exciting game like Exploding Balloons or Archery Tic Tac Toe. Archery is a part of every culture and is celebrated as a prominent game in the Olympics. In this program students will learn the history of Archery in the Olympics, how the Olympic Archery games are scored and will participate in a mock tournament. Grades: Boys and Girls in grades 5 - 12 Section: 1:30 - 2:30 $280 SOCCER Learn the fundamentals of soccer in a fun and safe environment led by the assistant coach of the Ramona Soccer Varsity team and Occidental College Womenʹs soccer team! Players will develop their soccer skills and form friendships. The focus of this course is play based with an organized technical development each session. This course is perfect for players to improve their athleticism and fitness while competing at a beginnerʹs level. VOLLEYBALL This course is for beginning volleyball players as well as those students that want to improve their current skill set. We will be focusing on basic skills such as serving and passing as well as have some fun recreational games during the time we are together. Come and have fun this summer learning volleyball and meeting new people. All you need is dedication, a good aAitude and a desire to learn. Come learn and have fun with Ramona’s own Coach Hoyos!
