BABS Harmony College I am delighted to present the prospectus for this year’s Harmony College, where you will find information about everything on offer about this year’s event. After such a successful event last year, my challenge this year was to build on that success, so my team and I have been working hard to make a number of tweaks and improvements to the event. For the first time, this year’s college will be managed by two people – Ali Jack will look after enrolment and accommodation, whilst Alan Goldsmith will return to the team to look after the educational planning and delivery of the event. I am hugely grateful to both of them for making this event happen, along with the countless volunteers who give their time and expertise freely. Joining our expert team of British educators this year is Steve Scott from the Barbershop Harmony Society. Steve is an expert in vocal pedagogy, a great teacher, and possesses a wonderful sense of humour. We will be working hard to ensure that every delegate at the event (including the faculty!) gets to spend some time with Steve over the busy weekend. My team have worked tirelessly to make this event not only special, but also as cost-effective and affordable as possible. As always there are a variety of price options to suit a variety of budgets, and BABS has agreed to make eight scholarships and awards available to those who apply, information on which can be found towards the back of the prospectus. I hope you enjoy reading the prospectus and that it gives you an idea of what is on offer at our 41st college. To book your place, please head over to www.babsharmonycollege.co.uk where you can secure your place and pay online. I look forward to welcoming you to Nottingham this August, to a Harmony College which will be as wonderful as ever! Vision and Aims The British Association of Barbershop Singers is a registered charity whose aim is to develop barbershop singing through education and encouragement. Harmony College is our premier event and one of which we can be rightly proud. This year sees us run our 41st Annual College, a tremendous achievement, given that we are an organisation run entirely by volunteers. Vision To be the best barbershop education event outside of North America. Aims To enable our delegates to make significant progress in their barbershop skills, whether as an individual, in chorus, or quartet. To provide a learning environment that is stimulating, safe and fun. To provide a platform for delegates to socialise, sing and have fun. For delegates to leave the event with a clear idea of their next steps for development. To provide development opportunities for our faculty. To contribute significantly to the wider BABS aim of ‘Growing Our Skills’. To contribute significantly to the charitable objects of BABS. To deliver value for money for our delegates. 4 Encouraging Improvement

Audition Chorus Stream Stream Leader: Tony Chapman 2019 Audition Chorus Director: Sally McLean Open to: all genders, BABS members only The Audition Chorus Stream is aimed at experienced singers looking to take their personal and collective performances to a new level. Year-on-year, the standard of performance on this stream grows, so the expectation on attendees is higher than ever. Those successfully gaining a place on this stream know that they will be alongside talented singers who have worked hard to learn the two songs before the event. Entry to the chorus will be by audition only, which is submitted to the Stream Leader before registering for Harmony College. This year we will form one 60-person chorus for the weekend, and work under the direction of the fabulous Sally McLean, multiple European Chorus Champion director. This year, the two songs will be ‘Hit me with a Hot Note’ and ‘The Street Where You Live. The Audition Chorus Stream is only available to subs-paying BABS members. Anyone who isn’t a subs-paying BABS member will have to become one (see https://www.singbarbershop.com/how_to_join.htm), or consider other streams at the event. For further information on the audition process, please see the separate document entitled ‘The Audition Process Explained’, or contact Tony Chapman on auditionchorus@singbarbershop.com. Closing Date: Sunday 30th June Pushing Yourself 9
College Chorus Stream Stream Leader: The Emerald Guard Open to: all genders, BABS members and non-members The College Chorus Stream is ideal for those wanting to have an introduction to the fundamentals of barbershop singing, or experienced barbershop singers who simply want a refresher. Either way, it is a fun, exhilarating experience where key barbershop skills are developed in a large ensemble setting. Over the course of the weekend, you will improve your ability to contribute to your own chorus performances with coaching in vocal technique and other essential skills, such as understanding the music, visual communication and responding to the director. It all culminates in the performance on the Saturday Night Show. The stream is led by the members of The Emerald Guard, who bring along their unique blend of enthusiasm to the chorus stream! They each bring their individual area of expertise to teach the skills which are most important to a barbershop chorus member. The Emerald Guard will be working hard to build a team at the same time, to ensure everyone goes away feeling an important part of a bigger chorus. The chorus will also receive additional input from the visiting educators during the weekend. The College Chorus songs for this year will be ‘May I Never Love Again?’ and ‘Just In Time’. Closing Date: Sunday 28th July Singing Together 11
BABS Harmony College ‘A motivating and informative weekend. I am now excited to move forward with my directing.’ 12 Developing Skills and Leadership
Directing Stream Stream Leader: Neil Firth Open to: all genders, BABS members and non-members Have you ever wondered what it would be like to stand in front of a chorus and lead from the front? Maybe you’re already directing but want to improve your skills? Maybe you just want to know more about the role of a director? Whatever your directing goals and regardless of experience or current skill level, if you have an interest in directing a barbershop chorus, then this is the stream for you. The Directing Stream is split into two days, which allows delegates to get involved in the Personal Development Stream if they wish to. Day one is focussed on conducting techniques, and delegates will be streamed according to their prior knowledge and ability. Day two is focussed on leadership, and the skills required to lead a successful barbershop chorus. Whether you are an existing front line director, assistant or aspiring director, music team leader, section leader or coach, this stream will help you understand what it takes to stand in front of any chorus and bring the whole ensemble together as one. The Directing Stream song for this year will be ‘Yesterday I Heard The Rain’. Closing Date: Sunday 18th August Developing Skills and Leadership 13
