We can use our innovation, knowledge and expertise to help pursue regional ambitions. We achieve this by connecting people, our knowledge institutions and the private and public sectors. The Netherlands Pavilion will be a place where crea- tive and innovative minds come together, where there will be opportunities for people to connect through a wide variety of events. Our pavilion will offer a warm welcome to the general public, and it will also be a platform where businesspeople, politicians, artists, academics and many others will meet and colla borate. We are a country that stands for openness, crea- tivity and inclusion. We are confident that the Dutch approach of bringing partners together will add value to a global event like the Dubai EXPO 2020. Let’s connect minds and create a better future!

An integrated approach is the key to creating sustainable cities. The first step is to incorporate green belts − where a city’s food is produced − into urbanised areas. Cities need to rethink the link between food production and urbanisation. The green belt (or urban growth boundary) and food production must become an integral part of major urban developments. If cities succeed in this, residents of rapidly growing metropolises will not only have access to healthy and safe food; they will also be able to enjoy clean air,

18 Event Calendar Climate & Biodiversity Week We find ourselves at a crucial juncture, a time in which we must take decisive collective action to protect our planet, and the life it sustains, for future generations. It is an opportunity for us to take our place in history as the generation that stepped up to rein in climate change. By adapting human activity to operate within Earth’s planetary bounda- ries, a sustainable future is within our grasp. A new global system, defined by circular economies powered by renew- able energy, will ensure that polar regions can be protected from the effects of global warming, and that life on land and in our oceans can be free from the threat of extinction. Week 40 The Dutch contribution to Climate and Biodiversity Week is twofold: there will be a strong focus on climate 03/10 – 09/10 adaptation and the best the Netherlands has to offer in mitigating measures. Given the overlap with the WETEX exhibition in Dubai, we will also focus on renewable energy sources (solar power) and water technology. The climate is changing. That much is clear. We also know that the effect of these changes are potentially far-reaching. But there is considerable uncertainty about the extent and speed of developments. How can we, despite that uncertainty, tailor our policy and investment decisions in the present to cope with climate change in the future? How can we make our infrastructure and cities resilient to climate change? Climate change affects not only our built environment but also the natural environment. Understanding how habitats change and adapt is crucial to enabling sustainable and future-proof developments. We are beginning to understand how past developments have impacted the climate. We are now seeking to limit this impact and develop in a climate-neutral way, e.g. by thinking in terms of a circular economy or by devising compensation projects for nature. But what if we can come up with a truly climate-positive way of shaping our world, not by limiting the impact on climate and the environment, but by creating op- portunities for nature and biodiversity in everything we design? Dutch organisations are working together to further this paradigm shift in an integrated way, and they are looking for partners around the world to build a better future together. The programme of Climate and Biodiversity week will consist of inspiring items like: - Climate Interactive (a climate change simulation tool) - The Utrecht Sustainability Game Jam - Dubai Citizen - Sustainable marine design: developing marine infrastructure that has a climate-positive impact - Resilient infrastructure and adaptive pathways. If you are interested in participating in the Dutch programme for this week and have inspiring contribu- tions of your own, please contact Ahmed Elkadi, Deltares, at Ahmed.Elkadi@deltares.nl. Also at the pavilion The Netherlands has a long track record in the field of climate adaptation. In our own country major in- frastructural projects protect the people from the sea, and innovations are needed to address challeng- es related to rising sea levels. At the pavilion you can take part in seminars, roundtables and presenta- tions on this issue by thought leaders and captains of industry. Furthermore, innovative Dutch companies will have the opportunity to showcase their latest in the field of solar technology, renewable energy and water tech. Incoming Trade missions Tentative: A delegation focused on renewable energy solutions, solar energy and water technology will visit the WETEX and the Netherlands Pavilion. This will provide an opportunity to reach out to international partners and forge new partnerships in these highly innovative sectors. Exhibitions, trade fairs and summits in the UAE WETEX The exhibition aims to integrate all sectors of the energy industry and bring together trade and technical sectors while facilitating the creation of new trade opportunities, stimulating the exchange of ideas and experiences and showcasing the latest innovations. Solar energy and water technology are key sectors at this exhibition. Visit www.wetex.ae for more information.
19 Space Week Space travel and exploration has captured the imagination of generations, and with exponential technological ad- vancement, the dream of space tourism is now closer than ever to being a reality. At the same time, with outer space remaining one of our few truly shared resources, the peaceful and equitable management of this distant realm requires concerted international cooperation among space-faring nations. During this fascinating week we highlight the very latest innovations in space research and travel, while also providing a platform to discuss critical issues. Week 42 The Netherlands’ contribution to Space Week will focus on the importance of preserving the Earth, from 17/10 – 23/10 an outer space perspective. During this week the Netherlands will inspire future generations by teaching people about space, planet Earth and technology. Educating future generations will be a key element of our participation in this week. We hope to announce our new partner for this week soon. This week will welcome several exceptional keynote speakers, flanked by a programme focused on edu- cating young people on Earth preservation. There will be a certain overlap between Space Week and the programme for the International Astronautical Congress in the UAE. We have time slots available for a business programme, for instance to showcase innovations on space monitoring systems in food production (e.g. crop monitoring) or water (e.g. space observance of the oceans). Feel free to contact us at DIO-EXPO2020@minbuza.nl for more details or to submit ideas you would like to pitch for this week.
20 Urban & Rural Development Week Whether in rural or urban settings, access to safe and affordable accommodation is a fundamental right. With more than 70% of the world’s population expected to live in cities by 2050, and over a billion people already living in infor- mal settlements, it is more important than ever to build resilient and sustainable habitats supported by networks of inclusive infrastructure and services. As the pressures on cities and communities escalate, Expo will bring together ex- perts, administrators and private citizens to re-think the way in which habitats – urban and rural, formal and informal – are designed and managed. From innovative transport, sustainable housing and green public spaces to renewable energy and the circular economy, habitats of the future are being imagined with sustainability and inclusivity at their core. Week 42 The Netherlands is looking forward to showcasing its innovations for a sustainable and liveable city at 17/10 – 23/10 Expo 2020 Dubai. This week will focus on several themes: water, food, sustainable building and urban mobility. Water: Water (SDG 6) is a key component of the ‘water, energy and food triangle’, especially in urban areas. Water is needed to produce energy and food and plays a crucial role in climate change and the cities of tomorrow. The Netherlands will focus on the subthemes of ‘climate adaptation’ and ‘water-smart cities’. During this theme week the Netherlands will lead a city-to-city panel to examine how different cities around the world are coming up with solutions to tackle the two climate extremes: flooding and heat stress. This panel will look at best practices, innovative infrastructure, integrated management of urban environment solutions, water technology tools, community initiatives, nature-based approaches, and ways in which cities are using citizen-outreach initiatives. Cities being considered for this exploration include Rotterdam, Chennai, Vancouver, Dubai, Muscat, Copenhagen, Orlando, Tirana, Rabat, Medellín, Santiago, Singapore and Mexico City. In addition to the high-level, city-to-city panel and presentations on the above-mentioned themes with the multi-city panel, Dutch organisations and selected counterparts around the world will have an opportunity to present their solutions in two in-depth workshops for an international audience of deci- sion-makers and possible partners. The event will integrate the voices of young professionals through a session led by Wetskills, featuring strategies devised by teams of young experts in the UAE and the Nether- lands who have joined forces on urban resilience challenges. Customised matchmaking, network events and seminars will also complement the activities to help participants make meaningful connections. Matchmaking, network events and seminars are important elements in this week. Food security in Urban areas Hundreds of megacities will arise in the years ahead, and they will want to produce their food locally. The Netherlands, as one of the most innovative food producers in the world, has what it takes to feed these megacities. In 2030 five billion people will be living in cities, most of them in metropolises of more than a million people. During the current COVID-19 pandemic, but also in the years before, there has been an increase in local demand for fresh, sustainably produced food. The Netherlands is taking part in a global effort to develop solutions to feed these megacities, and acceleration is necessary in order to develop new markets with innovative concepts, such as advanced greenhouse systems and indoor farming. Indoor facilities are able to eliminate water waste by recycling the same water throughout their operation. Indoor agriculture also reduces risks to the food supply chain. Volatility decreases the closer you get to the supermarket shelf. The Netherlands will organise dedicated ‘Feeding Megacities Seminars’ that set out a future-proof, sus- tainable supply system for fresh food. Business matchmaking, networking receptions and seminars with a focus on feeding megacities will highlight Dutch involvement in food issues.
21 Week 42 Speakers (t.b.d.) 17/10 – 23/10 • Expo Champion Meiny Prins – CEO Priva – Sustainable Urban Delta • Expo Champion Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb of Rotterdam • Chief Government Architect of the Netherlands – Panorama NL • Floriade • Wageningen University Urban Mobility The Dutch are well known for their love of bicycles and their use of cycling as a primary mode of trans- portation in urban areas. Cycling is good for your health, the environment, your wallet and so much more. The Netherlands is working together with a wide array of partners across the world to spread the gospel of cycling as a mode of transport in the city. At Expo 2020 Dubai the Netherlands is keen to showcase what can offer in terms of cycling mobility (t.b.d.) and highlight some of its most successful partnerships around the globe. 23 The Netherlands Offshore Energy Transition Week The Netherlands is a very densely populated and energy-intensive country which serves as a major energy hub for many European counties. It has five big industrial clusters, large deposits of natural gas, excellent infrastructure and a highly educated population. The energy consumption in the Netherlands is mainly in the form of natural gas, imported coal and oil, plus an increasing amount of renewable energy. The Netherlands is in the process of transitioning to fully renewable energy. During the Offshore Energy Transition Week, several theme-related activities are scheduled to take place at the Netherlands Pavilion. Find out below where you can plug in. www.topsectorenergie.nl/en Week 45/46 Water, energy and food security are global issues. The Netherlands is working hard to tackle them. With 12/11 – 18/11 such a large part of the country below sea level, we have had to protect our land from the powers of nature for centuries. And when it comes to energy, we are reducing our dependence on fossil fuels as we transition towards a sustainable, reliable and affordable energy system. We are taking the lead in the development of alternative energy sources and technologies. ENERGY IN THE NETHERLANDS Over the past decades, we have built wind farms in the sea and heated homes and offices with recycled energy from datacentres and greenhouses. Stands out by resourcefulness, applied science and ‘can do’ mentality in strong collaborations of Government, business, knowledge institutes, we are keen to share projects and innovations that showcase our strong capability in connecting sectors, humanity and technology with a sustainable mind-set. EMBRACING THE ENERGY TRANSITION With abundant availability of natural offshore resources at our doorstep, an excellent energy infrastructure and a well-educated population, The Netherlands has an impressive track record of over more than half a century on making different offshore energy solutions working together. Now, new insights and our commitment to the Paris agreement targets towards net zero emissions in 2050, are driving spectacular innovations to tackle climate change. These technological innovations, as well as changing behaviour, a broad view on economics and system integration, are essential to expedite the energy transition. Key topics in the transition towards net-zero emissions include: Renewable energy (wind & solar), (green) hydrogen and System integration GET INSPIRED BY THE DUTCH APPROACH Attending The Netherlands Offshore Energy Transition Week is particularly suitable for international stakeholders who want to get inspired by the Dutch Approach or who are interested to build on partnerships with Dutch private or public parties. 25 Global Goals Week The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are our global blueprint for a better world, and a state- ment of our collective ambition for dignified and equal opportunities for all. This Expo is an unparalleled opportunity to mobilise citizens around the Global Goals. Events during this week will take stock of how far we have come, exam- ine the role played by various actors – including individuals – with regard to the SDGs, and explore how we can act together to chart a way forward. Week 3 The programme for the Netherlands Pavilion for the Global Goals Week will focus on several themes 16/01 – 22/01 linked to the SDGs: water, food, energy, sustainable and smart solutions and more. With the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) and the Water, Energy and Food Trilateral Summit, the Global Goals week features a packed programme. Exact date t.b.a Water Theme: Water, Energy & Food for Cities, Industries and Agriculture Global challenges - integrated local solutions The Netherlands is partly man-made. We engineer our world by being both practical and creative. That is also how we look at the water cycle. It’s not about doing more of the same on a larger scale but rather about finding new solutions that take the water cycle to the next level, in a practical, efficient, sustainable and cost-effective way. It is a continuous revolution, in cooperation with national and international part- ners and experts. Living in a challenging environment, the Dutch have had to be inventive throughout their history. It is this mindset that has made us look for new approaches and techniques time and again, constantly developing our knowledge into new innovations. It made us experts on specific niches within the field of water technology. By 2050, an estimated 9 billion people will live in large urban areas. Clean water for people, industry and food production will become a challenge. This is why the contribution of the Core Team Water to the Expo programme for the Netherlands Pavilion focuses on these very areas: solutions for cities, industry and agriculture. The Netherlands will hold a global water seminar focused on global challenges and solutions as well as regional issues within the GCC region. We seek to foster cooperation on water issues in the Gulf region and around the world through local partners, while seeking the best approach to forming partnerships and finding solutions to existing challenges. Sub-thematic focus: • Water management / ground water management / IWRM • Water storage / water distribution • Ecosystem restoration / Flood management / NBS • Drinking water technology • Smart water technologies / NRW / asset management • Desalination / Zero-brine technologies • Renewable energy sources for desalination • Decentralised water treatment • Reuse of wastewater / wastewater treatment plants • Water for agriculture use • Water for food production The above-mentioned water seminar will be planned around the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), which takes place from 17 to 19 January 2022. In terms of content the seminar will also overlap with the trilateral summit between Netherlands, Jordan and the UAE.
26 16/01 – 18/01 Circular Economy programme Themes: Circular Building and Infrastructure, Plastics, Waste Management Dutch cities, businesses and the government embrace the circular economy as one of the solutions to reach their climate and city goals. The Dutch government and cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam have committed themselves to becoming fully circular by the year 2050, by reducing the use of virgin materials by 50% in 2030. A circular city is a resilient, healthy and competitive city, able to meet the needs of its residents within the natural bounds of what the planet can provide. Core elements of circularity are embedded in each key urban system; from water, to housing and infrastructure, to food and nutrition. As in a circular economy, a circular city keeps resources at their highest potential for as long as possible, through sharing, reusing, repairing, remanufacturing and recycling. But circularity is also about renewable energy, social inclusivity, biodiversity and new coalitions. It takes a shift in mentality to change what has long been considered waste into resources or input for new products and businesses. How do we design our cities, infrastructure and industrial processes in a way that they are energy positive and their materials can be re-used after the life cycle ends? In Dubai Dutch experts will share their ideas and experiences and look for international business partners to develop ideas and scale up innovations, because the Circular Economy needs world-wide engagement and collaboration. Our supply chains are organised internationally, and we need to collaborate to close the loops. The Dutch Circular Economy program in Dubai will focus on construction, plastics and waste management, bringing together innovative architects, project developers, service and product suppliers to meet with international developers and construction companies. Discussions of new ways to produce, reduce and re-use and recycle plastics are high on the European and Dutch agenda. We have an opportunity to discuss collaboration in the region where most of the virgin materials are being processed. Join us at the Netherlands Pavilion to talk with representatives of Dutch and international circular economy hotspots. Below is the programme drawn up by Holland Circular Hotspot (HCH) for the Netherlands Pavilion. 16 January • Arrival and welcome reception/ kick off 17 January • Circular Economy Pop-Up Expo at the Pavilion.
