Rediffusion Jippreżenta... Friday 12th November - Sunday 14th November 2021 The rediffusion was a way through which stories were transmitted long ago. From radio-dramas to news transmissions, the rediffusion studio acted as an audio-only stage for actors and sometimes, unexpected happenings would take place. A theatrical experience written by Trevor Zahra, Rediffusion explores the historic aspect in the broadcasting history of radio plays. This work is linked to the publication Remembering Rediffusion in Malta written by Dr Toni Sant. Form of the event: Theatre performance Collaborators: Trevor Zahra (Playwright) and Joseph Galea (Director) Taralalla Saturday 30th October - Sunday 7th November 2021 A play written by Lara Calleja, winner of the European Literature Prize 2021, this work looks into some of the hottest topics concerning the Maltese public at the moment. From construction, our hectic lifestyles and immigration, Taralalla uses Maltese traditions, death and nostalgia intertwined with the emotions of hope, anger and humanity to explore Malta’s socio-political landscape. Spaces in Suspension Friday 29th October - Sunday 12th December 2021 Joe Smith and Therese Debono, both documentary photographers based in Malta, took up the role of contemporary archaeologists in this project which aims to document and preserve one of the most iconic hotels in Malta in the 70s. The Grand Hotel Verdala stands as an architectural ruin and serves as an allegory of Malta’s transition towards progress. This commemorative project will depict notable episodes from his life through his popular writings, and never-seen-before drawings which give an insight into his thought process and personal upbringing. Carnival Friday 25th February - Tuesday 1st March 2022 Spazju Kreattiv, together with Festivals Malta, will be organising a number of activities for the Carnival weekend and beyond. The programme will include an exhibition showcasing the carnival costumes, float sculptures and sketches and other behind the scenes footage of the preparations of the most colourful time of the year! The programme will also include intergenerational activities, such as hands-on workshops, and Qarċilla (a poetic/theatrical form associated with Carnival in Malta) performances at Spazju Kreattiv’s theatre. VARI Friday, 8th April 2022 – Saturday, 16th April 2022 A theatre production based on the childhood fears often experienced during Holy Week in Malta. This is a stage adaptation of the short story Vari written by Trevor Zahra which forms part of a larger collection entitled “Lubien” published in 1995. This short story is also included in “Xemgħat”, a text being studied by students of Maltese at Advanced Level. This initiative is aimed to create awareness and visibility, educate and engage. The events will encompass theatre in the form of monologues, performances and debates aimed at a better understanding of women’s themes, such as the ageing woman and her contribution to society, women in literature/history and other themes relevant to the community. Il-Klus ta’ Clews Friday 24th - Sunday 26th June 2022 A special variety show celebrating the works of one of Malta’s most renowned comics, Charles Clews. This performance features popular Maltese entertainers interpreting the works of Clews from the 20th century. With a script written by Toni Sant and Trevor Zahra based on the writings of Charles Clews and his popular song, such as “Rozamarie”, “L-Emigrant” , “In-Nannu Tieghi Stess” and “Radju Muskettieri”, this performance is a nostalgia trip into the heart of Maltese comedy. Form of the event: Performances Collaborators: Trevor Zahra (Playwright), Joseph Galea (Director) and Toni Sant (Research) Palettes Wednesday 13th April - Sunday 29th May 2022 This project is about the preparation and consumption of food in multicultural or expat families/communities in Malta, or those with some international background or preferences. Katarina Radovic is exploring contemporary Maltese identity through the repertoire of typical dishes eaten in multicultural families/communities in the Maltese islands. In doing so, she engages in discussions with family/community members, taking photographs of them as well as of the associated dish(es) and/or particular groceries, spices, etc. During the process, she is also gathering short stories towards a text piece or an audio installation, which will accompany the photographs. Arthouse Films Ongoing The Spazju Kreattiv cinema programme features a curated selection of arthouse films and documentaries. The cinema programme, developed in collaboration with embassies and cultural institutions, focuses on bringing European films and documentaries together with the latest critically-acclaimed arthouse films from around the world. In 2021 | 2022 one can expect films d’auteur, thought-provoking documentaries and special events for our cinema members. Form of the event: Film Exhibition on Screen Working with top international museums and galleries, the Exhibition On Screen series offer a cinematic immersion into the world’s best loved art, accompanied by insights from the world’s leading historians and art critics. Screenings this season include: Sunflowers, Raphael Revealed, The Danish Collector: Delacroix To Gauguin, Frida Kahlo Encore, Easter In Art and Pissarro: Father Of Impressionism. The position of cameras in the theatre is tailored to each play, to ensure that audiences watching in the cinema always get the best seat in the house. The legendary Russian company offers dance lovers the opportunity to experience five of their most iconic showson the big screen. In November, Spartacus, a sensational ballet composed by Aram Khachaturian, opens this season with alive broadcast from the Bolshoi Theatre's historic stage. In December, Tchaikovsky's holiday classic The Nutcracker will bring out a festive atmosphere in movie theatres. George Balanchine’s sparkling Jewels opens the new year with a live broadcast, followed by the captivating Swan Lake in early March to ravish cinema audiences. Music Series Ongoing Throughout the season, a series of concerts will be presented in collaboration with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and KorMalta. The programme of the music events will consist of classical music, contemporary adaptations, and other concerts throughout the year.
