OUR PEOPLE FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED For Over 35 Years Since 1985, the Torn family has dedicated their lives to creating an incomparable camp experience and environment for kids. The Torns believe firmly the Lord has blessed them with amazing staff, driven by purpose and committed to the mission of serving kids. Each of the three summer camp environments created by the Torns have been meticulously planned to blend incomparable natural beauty with the most diverse and exciting camp programming in America. While creating new and innovative ways for kids to have a total blast, perfecting the customer experience, providing quality health care, washing dishes, or re-stocking the store, each of the three generations of Torns are fully invested in making every aspect of the experience incomparable. Our goal is for each and every child and each and every staff member to feel like family. We know for many families, the summer camp experience is transformative for their children. We love creating places where kids can be kids. Where they can learn to laugh, sing, run, and play. Where they can be goofy, silly, and crazy. Where they can learn, mature, and grow. Where they can make a friend, be a friend, and keep a friend. It’s why we do what we do. There is no place we would rather be than leading an amazing staff who seek to make a real impact on kids. 3
OUR PEOPLE THE TORN SAM & SUSAN TORN Family Read more about Sam and Susan Sam and Susan Torn have been the owners of Camp Ozark since 1985. However, Sam first came to Camp Ozark (then known as Ozark Boy’s Camp) in 1951 at the age of three with his family. He later spent five summers as a camper at Ozark Boy’s Camp and six summers as a counselor. In 1985, Sam and Susan, along with their three small children, left their suburban lifestyle behind and took a leap of faith when they acquired the assets of Camp Ozark. Since then, through hard work, dedication, and the highest of standards, the Torn family has guided Camp Ozark to its place as THE premier summer camp experience. As the founders of Camp Ozark, Sam and Susan remain fully committed to the mission of Camp Ozark and to the overall camper experience. Sam and Susan’s three children - Scott, Chris, and Angela - have now all assumed operating responsibilities for the Torn Family Camps and continue the legacy begun by Sam and Susan. WINNING ESSAY READ THE WINNING WINNING PERFORMANCE CAROLINE SMITH S03 ESSAY BELOW! AMY MASSEY S06 SINGING BORN TO ENTERTAIN Throughout American history, probably millions of people have said they love America. Every person has a different reason. We have freedom we are a democracy, or even that it is beautiful. America is one of the largest, most diverse countries on our planet. Every year, hundereds of people flock to America to find a safe haven. Closer to home, we have private and public schools, grocery stores that (almost) never run out of food or supplies. America may not be perfect, but I love America! For starters, we have freedoms. This is the first thing anyone thinks of, and it is super generic, but it is so true. Just to name a few, we have the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and many more. The freedoms protected by the constitution and ammendments are the reason many people come to America. Another reason I love America is that there is so much state pride. This might seem silly, but the fact that there are 50 states, each with their own laws, governments, and individual cultures, is amazing when you think about it. There are shirts that advertise the fact that everything is bigger in Texas, or jackets that publicise the awesomeness of life in Louisiana. State pride is a large part of who we are in America. Picking a final reason why I love America is nearly impossible. The beautiful views? The largeness? I think the final reason why I love America is that I have so many memories here. Born and raised in America, I have 13 years worth of memories, the earliest of which start at 3 years old. Memories of sitting inside, watching rain water hitting the pool. Memories of skiing down the side of a mountain. Memories of riding in the car, singing along to ‘Baby Shark’. And bad memories. Memories of falling, getting countless cuts and scrapes. Memories of getting in trouble for coloring on the walls. Memories of every boad game or card game or playground game I have ever lost. Memories are what teach us to do and what not to do. Memories are what form our entire selves, and for me, every single memory I have is of America. Not only are memories that form us, but they are what form America. Our idea of America and patriotism, comes from human memory throughout history. That is why I love America - because America is the memory of every person that has ever set foot on America. America is what we believe in. America is ours. 9
