ABOUT SOUTHERN CROSS CARE QLD About over 1000 Southern Cross employees Care Qld serving over Southern Cross Care Qld is a not-for-profit organisation established by the Knights of the Southern Cross, a Catholic 1400 service organisation. Over 40 years ago, the Knights saw a people need in the community to provide compassionate care and inclusive service to the most vulnerable in our community, the ageing population. OUR MILESTONES Celebrating 40 years of aged care It all began in 1979 in Holland Park where Brisbane auxiliary Bishop Ken Howell was the Archbishop Duhig Court Hostel first opened its principal celebrant at the Mass of Thanksgiving, doors offering 48 beds to those in need. OUR MILESTONES Caloundra Rise Celebrates 15 years There is a sense of connection between everyone at the village and it is such a welcoming community. Peter Snell Retirement Living Manager, Caloundra Rise 2018 was an important year for Caloundra Rise as they celebrated their 15th birthday. Residents, staff and community members came together on Saturday 22 September 2018 to celebrate with an open day. A variety of activities and products were on display including arts and crafts, Woodies’ Shed products, garden produce, table tennis, and cards and games. There were also guest representatives from the local community to answer questions about mobility, health and safety, financial and legal matters, and sleep solutions. Retirement Living Manager Peter Snell says the open day was a great way to pay testament to the wonderful residents and the bustling community that has been built at Caloundra Rise. “There is a sense of connection between everyone at the village and it is such a welcoming community,” he says. OUR MILESTONES Stretton Gardens 10th anniversary Michael Hart, Chief of Mission & Identity and Vicki Eckart, Chief of Integrated Service Delivery, attended a special morning tea on 20 March 2019 to highlight Stretton Garden’s 10th Anniversary. Of special note was the acknowledgement of staff and residents who had been at the facility since it began. Fr Paul Chanh, Priest in Residence, began the celebrations with a simple blessing which highlighted the special place that Stretton Gardens is. Residents, family members and staff at the gathering shared stories about how the facility has changed and grown over the past 10 years. OUR PEOPLE International Nurses’ Day On 12 May each year, Southern Cross Care Qld marks International Nurses Day, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Our staff took the opportunity to dress up in their best nurses’ outfit from the decades to pay tribute to the remarkable contribution from our nurses. Years of Service Southern Cross Care Qld employees celebrated a number of amazing milestones over the year. We thank each and every staff member for their commitment to their work in improving the lives and wellbeing of the people we serve. We particularly want to congratulate the 81 employees who have been with Southern Cross Care Qld for 10 or more years. A number of horses and their riders from the Campdraft kindly took the time to brighten our residents’ day while they were in town for the Grandfather Clock Campdraft. Some of our residents grew up on properties where they were surrounded by horses their whole lives so the opportunity to see or touch one again was a great experience. OUR COMMUNITY Anzac Day Celebrations at St. Mary’s Southern Cross Care St Mary’s Raceview commemorated Anzac Day on Tuesday 23 April 2019. Residents and families paid their respects with a wreath laying ceremony and service. The ceremony was followed by morning tea with Anzac biscuits and damper for residents to enjoy. The wreaths were handmade by residents at St Mary’s. Their appreciation and smiles said it all.. Juanita Burrows Community Services Officer This year, an initiative from the Community Care team saw the corporate office raise over $750 to purchase new warm clothes for our Community clients. The money was used to help purchase every client a new jumper, tracksuit pants, two pairs of socks and a beanie. Additionally, a number of warm clothes were donated and shared among the clients to help bulk up their winter wardrobe. OUR COMMUNITY Christmas Celebrations at Eden’s Landing Every year, Santa and his elves come to visit the residents at Eden’s Landing aged care to brighten up their Christmas. Kell Ronan has been a resident at Eden’s Landing for many years, and every year since 2008, Kell has dressed up as Santa’s elf to help distribute the presents. The staff also play Santa’s little helpers and dress up in the Christmas spirit. Opening of the Treeby Outdoor Area, Karinya On 2 April 2019, invited guests, including the Executors of the Estate, joined with members of the Treeby family, Karinya residents and staff to celebrate the opening of this area. The late Lucy May Treeby generously bequeathed $100,000 to Karinya, Southern Cross Care Nanango. The intention was for the funds to be used to enhance the lifestyle of the residents of Karinya. OUR COMMUNITY Our Centenarians Rita May Edwards Leila Mary Morrison Rita was born on 20 December 1918 Leila was born on 22 May 1919 in in Narrabri and lived in NSW most of Chinchilla and grew up on a dairy her life before moving to Brisbane farm. She either walked or rode a in 1982. Rita married Leslie Edwards horse five miles to and from school. in 1938 and they had seven children, Leila married Alexander Morrison two girls who died in infancy and at 23 years old and had two boys five boys. Rita was always clever and one girl. OUR COMMUNITY Celebrate 100 years Harold Dickson Sister Patricia Dent Harold was born in western Queensland Sister Patricia was born at Bangalow on 2 March 1919 on an unusually frosty in NSW on 27 April 1918. OUR DEVELOPMENTS Growing our future Key Highlights NEW DEVELOPMENTS UNDERWAY Construction commenced at two of Southern Cross Care Qld’s retirement villages. Building 2 at ParqueVista on Seville at Holland Park achieved completion in October 2019 and Stages 4 and 5 at Stretton Gardens retirement estate are due for completion in December 2019. CAPITAL WORKS PROGRAM Delivered >95% of the capital works program resulting in major and minor refurbishments to facilities across our metro and regional locations. More than $800,000 of the $3.4M budget was saved through efficiencies and prioritisation of essential works ensuring value for money in key infrastructure delivery. INFRASTRUCTURE FUNDING AWARDED Secured funding of over $900,000 for infrastructure upgrades at Allora Homestead and Karinya Nanango aged care facilities. The funds will be used to upgrade resident rooms to assist with accessibility and improve safety at the two sites in 2019/20. EDEN’S LANDING COMMUNITY CENTRE REFURBISHMENT The community centre is a focal point for the retirement village and needed a significant uplift. A major refurbishment was successfully completed in June 2019 to bring it up to modern standards including providing improved access and upgraded bar and outdoor servery, new paint and flooring and a full furnishings replacement. OUR DEVELOPMENTS New high-rise apartments at ParqueVista An additional 40 new independent living units have been added to ParqueVista on Seville. Located at Holland Park in Brisbane’s south, ParqueVista on Seville is Southern Cross Care’s only vertical village. With 43 independent living units, residents were able to move into ParqueVista building one in 2017. The $17 million development of building two will add 40 new two-bedroom, two-bedroom plus study, and three-bedroom units. Each unit boasts modern fixtures and fittings with open plan living, dining and kitchen areas that take in the views from the spacious balcony. OUR DEVELOPMENTS Retire to nature at Stretton Gardens The final stages of construction at Stretton Gardens Retirement Estate is currently underway. Stages 4 and 5 will deliver an additional 34 new independent living units. The estate’s location bordering the Karawatha Forest at Drewvale in Brisbane’s south boasts peaceful and picturesque living at its best, right on nature’s doorstep. The $10million new development adds two-bedroom and two-bedroom plus study independent living units. Construction is due for completion in December 2019.
