PROGRAM OF EVENTS “THE BIG 5” SONGS The “Big 5” are the five traditional songs we sing during our Opening and Closing Day worship services. They’re fun, they’re loud, and the campers love them! Join in as we sing two of these songs, “Can’t Nobody,” and “Pharaoh, Pharaoh.” STAFF INTRODUCTIONS Meet the hardworking backbone of Camp Ozark, the Ozark staff. You can follow along on pages 3-7 as different teams and individuals are announced. VALUES & SPECIAL RECOGNITIONS Our “values-based camping” philosophy is an important part of the Camp Ozark experience. We also take time to recognize some individual campers for their accomplishments. CAMPER AWARDS The Order of the Arrow award recognizes those campers who have exemplified the “3 flames” of Team Competition, while F.I.T. awards recognize those in each cabin who have modeled true First is Third behavior. TENURE AWARDS Our returning campers are at the heart of Camp Ozark! We take time to recognize all campers who have spent four or more years at Camp Ozark. CLOSING REMARKS & FRIENDS As we conclude our Closing Day ceremony, we pass along a few tidbits of important information before wrapping things up with the traditional singing of the song “Friends.” See you next summer! 2
FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED FOR OVER 35 YEARS Since 1985, the Torn family has dedicated their lives to creating an incomparable camp experience and environment for kids. The Torns believe firmly the Lord has blessed them with amazing staff, driven by purpose and committed to the mission of serving kids. Each of the three summer camp environments created by the Torns have been meticulously planned to blend incomparable natural beauty and scenery with the most diverse and exciting camp programming in America. While creating new and innovative ways for kids to have a total blast, perfecting the customer experience, providing quality health care, washing dishes, or re-stocking the store, each of the three generations of Torns are fully invested in making every aspect of the experience incomparable. Our goal is for each and every child and each and every staff member to feel like family. We know for many families, the summer camp experience is transformative for their children. We love creating places where kids can be kids. Where they can learn to laugh, sing, run, and play. Where they can be goofy, silly, and crazy. Where they can learn, mature, and grow. Where they can make a friend, be a friend, and keep a friend. It’s why we do what we do. There is no place we would rather be than leading an amazing staff who seek to make a real impact on kids. 3
THE TORN FAMILY SAM & SUSAN TORN Read more about Sam and Susan Sam and Susan Torn have been the owners of Camp Ozark since 1985. However, Sam first came to Camp Ozark (then known as Ozark Boy’s Camp) in 1951 at the age of three with his family. He later spent five summers as a camper at Ozark Boy’s Camp and six summers as a counselor. In 1985, Sam and Susan, along with their three small children, left their suburban lifestyle behind and took a leap of faith when they acquired the assets of Camp Ozark. Since then, through hard work, dedication, and the highest of standards, the Torn family has guided Camp Ozark to its place as THE premier summer camp experience. As the founders of Camp Ozark, Sam and Susan remain fully committed to the mission of Camp Ozark and to the overall camper experience. Sam and Susan’s three children - Scott, Chris, and Angela - have now all assumed operating responsibilities for the Torn Family Camps and continue the legacy begun by Sam and Susan. Sam and Susan also have fourteen grandchildren and count them as the greatest joys of their life. L.I.T.s serve behind the scenes in a variety of ways and have the opportunity to see what having a heart of a servant is really like. S.W.A.T S.W.A.T. stands for “Servants Working All Together.” The Camp Ozark S.W.A.T. team is comprised of dedicated, hard-working staff members who work behind the scenes to perform a variety of tasks. The S.W.A.T. team responsibilities include cleaning, maintenance, setting up camp events, and much more. AWARDS CABIN AWARDS Each camper who attends Camp Ozark is special and uniquely created by God. To recognize each camper’s uniqueness, we present two awards to every camper. The first award is in recognition of a unique personality trait while the second is for upholding one of our six core values: DEVELOP A MORE POSITIVE SELF-ESTEEM We know self-esteem is important and want our campers to have or develop a positive view of themselves. We want them to feel good about who they are and to understand God made them just as they are for a reason. We strive to build our campers up and help them recognize their uniqueness and worth. ACHIEVE GREATER SELF-CONFIDENCE Camp Ozark is a great place for kids to challenge themselves with new things and to be adventurous. Self-confidence comes from the knowledge that success or failure isn’t nearly as important as simply having the courage to just try. We seek to help our campers feel secure enough to face any adventure in camp and in life. CULTIVATE CHARACTER WITH INTEGRITY Integrity, having the courage to do the right thing no matter the circumstance, is an invaluable and increasingly rare characteristic. Integrity also involves moral conviction, respect for others, and truthfulness. At Camp Ozark, we emphasize the value of integrity at every turn and want our campers to understand the importance of being a person who always seeks to do the right thing. UNDERSTAND THE VALUE OF TEAMWORK Teamwork is an important part of life. We are parts of a team at school, in sports, in non-school programs, in college, in business, in marriage, and in life. At Camp Ozark, our campers are parts of teams in the cabin, in activities, and during competition. Through these opportunities, we help our campers understand the value of being a part of a team and how, sometimes, the success of the team – however that is defined – is more important than any individual. LEARN THE IMPORTANCE OF FRIENDSHIP Camp Ozark provides a great opportunity for campers to form genuine, face-to-face friendships with other kids from around the country. In today’s world, these types of friendships are increasingly rare but so very valuable. We want our campers to learn the art and value of true friendship and to appreciate the gift of a true friend. GROW A STRONGER SENSE OF INDEPENDENCE We know independence is different for a 7-year-old than for a 17-year-old. But at Camp Ozark, we provide an environment in which all campers can grow in independence in ways appropriate for their age. Whether it’s taking on new challenges, making choices about what to do during a Special Event or Mish Mash, or learning to keep their bunk area clean, our campers have ample opportunities to grow and 8 learn about becoming more self-reliant and making wise choices.
AWARDS JOURNEYS Journeys is a voluntary, multi-level achievement program that challenges campers in the areas of personal development, achievement, and participation. It takes self-discipline and dedication to earn a Journeys’ award, so we are very proud of our Journeys’ award winners! Each camper who participates has their essay placed in their closing day packet to keep. We do select one essay each session for recognition. Congratulations! WINNING ESSAY: COUNTS SHANKS P02 “Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country”, President Kennedy once famously said. There is an astonishing amount of pride that I have found in America as I enter the age of a legal adult - and an immense desire to give back to the nation. The opportunities that will emerge for me as I turn 18 fill me with respect and love for our nation. I will be able to tangibly connect with our democracy via voting, and countless other opportunities. But the greatest parts about being an American are what I have been granted from birth: democratic ideals, neccessary and additional rights and protectionsm and the freedom to make the world a better place even as a teenage girl. Leadership is rooted in the DNA of Americans, and for that I am grateful to grow from. It is my prayer and mission to continue Christ-centered service and show other young Americans why I love and how they as well can love America. 9
AWARDS F.I.T. FIRST IS THIRD F.I.T. - First Is Third is the overriding spiritual philosophy of Camp Ozark. We believe true success in life is only possible by placing God first, others second, and ourselves third. Each session, one camper from each cabin is recognized for exemplifying our F.I.T. philosophy. Once a camper has won a session F.I.T. award three times, their name is permanently displayed on a plaque located in the Dining Hall. Congratulations to our session F.I.T. award winners!
