Sept 2016—present. Sept 2019 – Present: Senior Advisor & Plant Breeder, Sept 2016-2019:
Deputy Director, MaRCCI, a World Bank African Centre of Excellence in Graduate Training.
Responsible for overseeing student and short course training, and MaRCCI’s cowpea and
sorghum breeding programs. Involved in strategic planning, resource mobilization, grant
writing, and partnership activities.

Sept., 2008 – Dec, 2019. Visiting Professor, Dept. of Agricultural Production, Makerere Univ.,
Kampala, Uganda. Instructor and mentor for students in a regional MSc in Plant Breeding and
Seed Systems and in a regional PhD program in Plant Breeding and Biotechnology at Makerere
Univ. Taught: Plant Breeding theory, Practical Plant Breeding Methods, Quantitative Genetics,
and Statistics. Actively involved in the guidance of students’ research proposal development,
experimental design, methods of data analysis, and preparation of theses and technical journal
articles. Participated in resource mobilization and in development of PBEA (Plant Breeding e-
Learning in Africa) modules.

Dec. 2005 – Dec, 2009. Consultant, GENE project. A multi-scientist team which has
developed a computer population genetics simulator that tracks mutation accumulation over time
in populations of 10,000 individuals or more, over the course of 100,000 generations or more, as
affected by selection, drift, environmental effects, and several other parameters. Specific
responsibility: assisting in the development of biologically realistic simulation procedures, and
comparing simulation results with results predicted mathematically from population genetics
theory.

July, 2002 – May, 2008. Visiting Professor, Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine. Dnepropetrovsk
Medical Institute of Folk Medicine. Sponsoring organization: Global Scholars (A registered US
educational organization serving institutions of higher education abroad). Activities included
preparing and presenting scientific reports and journal articles, consulting with local professors
regarding statistical analysis of research data, preparation of grant proposals. Similar assistance
was provided to Dnepropetrovsk State Agrarian University.

molecular genetics, plant breeding and miscellaneous topics, organizing and conducting special

from NEXTGEN (Next Generation Cassava Breeding, 1st and 2nd phase, administered by Cornell
Univ.). These, plus other grants have totaled over $12 million in student sponsorships,
instructional support, research activities, and infrastructural development.

Oct. 9, 2001. Patent covers molecular-markers discovered, and process of marker-assisted
selection using these markers.
Method of determining soybean sudden death syndrome resistance in a soybean plant.
Khalid Meksem, Paul T. Gibson, David A. Lightfoot, Southern Illinois University. US
Patent 7,288,386 granted, Oct. 30, 2007. Patent covers a method of determining the presence
of soybean sudden death syndrome resistance in the soybean plant in a greenhouse setting, using
a low-density inoculation of Fusarium solani.
Varieties/Germplasms Registered: Maize-2 varieties (originator). Soybeans: 3 varieties and 5
       registered germplasms (Co-Developer).

2008-2019. Instructor and mentor in the Makerere Regional Graduate Programs in Plant Breeding (MSc PBSS and
PhD PBB). Primary involvement was with the MSc PBSS program, which has trained 141 MSc students. Provided
additional support to the PhD PBB program, which has trained 71 PhD students (completed & in progress).
1986-1998 Advisor or co-advisor for 3 PhD. and 17 MSc. students who graduated from SIUC, including 9
international students, each representing a different country.
