Have you tried a Heat and Moisture Exchanger (HME)? Your nose and upper airways warm and moisturise the air you breathe. This retention of moisture is very important for the lungs and is called humidification. After a total laryngectomy, breathing through the stoma in your neck means natural humidification systems are lost. Without appropriate humidification, mucus (phlegm) will become thicker and harder to cough up, this can leave you more prone to chest infec- tions. 6
How an HME can help?
An HME acts like your nose and upper airway. As you
breathe out, the heat and moisture is retained within the
special foam material in the HME so that when you breathe
in, this is returned to you. The foam inside an HME can
significantly improve humidification. They are clinically
proven to be far more efficient than laryngectomy bibs or
foam protectors.
Would you benefit from using an HME?
Using an HME is a very easy solution to the problem of sticky
phlegm. To get the best effect, they should be used 24 hours
a day. A number of clinical studies have shown that when
this is done pulmonary problems such as chest infections,
coughing and increased mucus are greatly improved. Not
only this, quality of life problems (fatigue, poor sleep and
anxiety levels) can also be reduced.

ProTrach® DualCare™
ProTrach DualCare combines a speaking valve with an HME, and in
this way enabling speaking and supporting your lungs with important
heating and moisturising. The switch between the speaking mode and
HME mode is done with a twist of the lid. Suitable for both adult and
paediatric use. Please discuss with your Healthcare Professional.
Speaking mode
ProTrach DualCare is put into speaking mode by twisting the lid of the
speaking valve until it clicks into speaking mode and the membrane
covers the openings of the speaking valve. When ProTrach DualCare is
in speaking mode, there is no HME effect.
HME mode
ProTrach DualCare is put into HME mode by twisting the lid of the
valve until it clicks into position. In the HME mode, you breathe both in
and out through the HME, saving heat and moisture when breathing
out, and giving heat and moisture back when inhaling.

The objective of our team is to improve quality of life and independence. This is achieved through advice and support on appropriate product use and by working collaboratively with your hospital team and your GP. We aim to recognise any issue that may arise and to work with you to find a resolution. You are visited in the comfort of your own home or, when available, in our dedicated clinics.
