Issue 3.5, 08 September, 2020. Principal’s Report As we head into the final two weeks of term, I would like to thank our families for their support in ensuring our students are successful in their learning. Yesterday our staff participated in assessment moderation with Rainbow Beach teachers, and it was exciting to see the high calibre of our students’ work. Our students are looking forward to resuming Acknowledgement Day activities next week. Students who have shown good attendance, behaviour and participation will be receiving an invitation to attend in the coming days, as recognition for their efforts. Tin Can Bay Taipans are well into their training for the School’s Volleyball Cup on the Gold Coast next term, and are extremely excited to be competing again. Congratulations to Dave and Tony Arthur on their excellent preparation of this team. Congratulations also to our Primary Maths Team Challenge competitors. We are excited that our students were named champion team (small schools), and we are extremely proud of their representation of Tin Can Bay P-10. Work has progressed on the construction of our first Human Powered Vehicle (HPV). Mr Dorey and his helpers have attached the outer shell, lighting components and shields, and have turned a steel frame into a sleek, streamlined racing machine. Students are looking forward to creating a team name that can be painted on to the bodywork, and to begin a training regime. We are excited to be in a position to offer an exciting new extracurricular activity at Tin Can Bay, and to participate in the famous Maryborough Technology Challenge next year. While school holidays are a chance for our young people to relax and connect with friends, parents are reminded to monitor their children’s social media interactions over the school holidays. Our young people risk being exposed to harmful media content and cyberbullying, and holiday time often sees an increase in inappropriate social media use. Our first school day next term is Tuesday 6 October, as Monday 5 is a public holiday. Wishing everyone in the Tin Can Bay School Community a wonderful break, I look forward to seeing our students back in Term 4. Chappy Chat Hi All, Seasons for Growth: Seasons for Growth is a program I will be running next term. It is a small group program that supports children and young people to learn that change is part of life. It will be run weekly during class time for approx. 40-45 mins for 8 weeks. There will be a letter going home this week with the newsletter. If you feel this would benefit your child, please complete permission slip attached to the letter and return it to the Administration Office as soon as possible. Breakfast Club: Students have supported our new COVID safe procedures. Reminder that poppers, toast and fruits are available each Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30 am for all students. Lunchtime Connect is held in M1 at both breaks on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students from year 3 and above are able to access Lunchtime Connect. There are always crafts to make and games to play, or just sit and chat with your friends in a safe and welcoming space. Hope to see you! Garden Club: The first of our apple cucumber seeds were popping through on Monday. We also planted some more sweet potato cuttings. Last Monday we had a feast of beans, strawberries, radish various lettuce leaves and some fennel. This week we had some more beans, radish and strawberries and some of the snow peas were ready to harvest. Yummo! We’ve been having great numbers of students coming along and trying something new. I look forward to seeing you next week. I will come up to the library around 7:45am to pick up those who wish to come down and work in the garden. Just a reminder that if you or your children need a listening ear I am here on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays to be of assistance. Just give the office a call and they will let me know. Community Help There are some resources in our community that may be of help. Helping Children Cope with Trauma (cont.) Kids and trauma recovery – Tip 5: Rebuild trust and safety Trauma can alter the way a child sees the world, making it suddenly seem a much more dangerous and frightening place. Your child may find it more difficult to trust both their environment and other people. You can help by rebuilding your child’s sense of safety and security. Create routines. Establishing a predictable structure and schedule to your child’s or teen’s life can help to make the world seem more stable again. Try to maintain regular times for meals, homework, and family activities. Minimize stress at home. Try to make sure your child has space and time for rest, play, and fun. Manage your own stress. The more calm, relaxed, and focused you are, the better you’ll be able to help your child. Speak of the future and make plans. This can help counteract the common feeling among traumatized children that the future is scary, bleak, and unpredictable. Keep your promises. You can help to rebuild your child’s trust by being trustworthy. Be consistent and follow through on what you say you’re going to do. If you don’t know the answer to a question, don’t be afraid to admit it. Don’t jeopardize your child’s trust in you by making something up. Remember that children often personalize situations. They may worry about their own safety even if the traumatic event occurred far away. Reassure your child and help place the situation in context.
